Baby registry and purchases before your baby shower?

Married an

I have not started my registry nor do I plan to until probably around Thanksgiving time. I am just curious what everyone bought before their showers. I am a big CraigsList surfer but haven't purchased much yet. I think you can find great stuff on there for fractions of the price. I was thinking I would buy used a video baby monitor, cloth diapers (to find my preferred type/brand) and dresser and crib set (once I check out the recalls, etc). I have also been given a bunch of stuff from my sister in law like bouncy chairs, bassinettes, infant swing, clothing, baby tub, stroller & carseat (not sure about it's safety rating though) and a bunch of other stuff I have no idea what it is.

What is left for my baby registry?

Baby #1 due February 1, 2011 and shower is only 2 weeks before the due date!
Having the shower so close because that's when my sister (has time and) offered to have it for me. I would prefer to have it after the baby is born that way out of town people could meet the baby and we don't know what we're having yet!

Answer
Well, i have a 7month old and i'm still finding things i need. I suggest getting some sort of toybox/storage system...i really like those cubbies and fabric bins. you won't really need it for a while, but i'm already tripping over all her toys! a hamper. i have a little 3drawer plastic office organizer for her headbands and clips, it's nice for little odds and ends. I agree with a previous comment, it's better to buy a new carseat if you are able to. A soft lamp, so when you go in to feed/change/check on baby you won't wake them up too much. you'll need a finger nail clipper. again, i agree w a previous person...a diaper warmer isn't necessary, just hold it in your hand for a minute. blankets, lots of socks (they always go missing) pacifiers and a CLIP, don't forget a clip to attach it to the baby or car seat. one little gadget i was given, and loved was this timer (from babiesRus or target i think) it has a few timers for last diaper change, feeding, medicine administration, how long they've been asleep. it helped me alot in the beginning to wake her up for her feedings instead of letting her sleep thru them.

If anyone has read/written a story/novel set in 80s or just knows about the 80s, please answer?

Ryssa

I'm writing a story that takes place in the 80s. Here are some questions.

What was the fashion like? (That includes hair, jewelry, and clothing)
What was the music like? (Artists and general genres)
What was out back then? (Computers, phones, stuff like that. Technology)

Those are just some questions. I know I make it sound like it was a long time ago, but I'm fifteen and living in 2011. I'm not gonna know a bunch about the 80s. I know jean jackets were cool, I think Grateful Dead were cool (not sure. My mom grew up in the 80s, but she hasn't told me a whole lot about it). I'm not sure what the phones were like and stuff like that. Thanks for the help!
PS story takes place in 1988

Answer
Yeah, that's a BIG question.

Regarding technology, the biggest thing to think about is the lack of convenience and accessibility to information that we have today. If you needed a phone number or an address to a business, you had to look it up in the phone book (or call Information, which cost money). If you wanted a specific product, you had to know exactly which store to go to buy it, or call around to different places to see if they had it. If I wanted to know more about a particular topic, I had to go look it up in one of our reference books, or wait until I could go to either the school library or the public library. And we were more or less blissfully free of other people's opinions. Think about how many Internet comments you read on a weekly basis, how many debates you see online, how many dumb opinions and comments you read on Facebook or Twitter -- in the 80s it was very easy to avoid people's one-off remarks and ridiculous opinions!

(Then again, it seemed like people also got together in person more to talk, so not all dumb comments were unavoidable.)

I remember sitting around my room in the summer waiting for my favorite songs to come on the radio ... so that I could rush to hit "record" on my tape player to record the song onto a cassette. And also bugging my dad to let me learn how to program the VCR so that I could record my favorite TV shows. But you had to make sure you had a working cassette handy to do that, and you didn't want to tape over that show from last week you hadn't watched yet.

I was into the Internet and e-mail really, really early (like, early 90s), but the vast majority of people were not, so it was hard to stay in touch with people if you were quiet like me. I would always try to snail-mail my friends from summer camp, but we'd always wind up losing touch. Sometimes I think about how many of those summer camp friends I'd still know if there'd been a way to keep in touch with them online in the late 80s.

Oh, and as for phones, we had three in the house -- two corded phones and one cordless phone. The cordless phone had terribly staticky reception sometimes, and would pick up noise from my neighbor's baby monitor. I didn't know anyone who had a mobile phone until 1991, and that was a phone installed in my best friend's dad's car.

A lot of people didn't have computers at home until the early or mid 90s. If you did have one at home in the late 80s, it likely had a very slow modem or none at all. Our 80s computer had a word processing program and some games (Oregon Trail was my favorite! I was always dying of dysentery). But it couldn't play music or video, and there was no Web until 1994, so Internet stuff was confined to local BBS, IRC (Internet Relay Chat), and Usenet... basically, things that were text-only (and only a small subset of geeks would have been using those things in the late 80s).

Music was all over the map -- pop, New Wave, metal, rap, etc. You will want to do some research on 80s music in general, decide what your characters are into, and then research that genre further.

Fashion, too, was a little bit of everything. Lots of girls had BIG hair, with poofy bangs. And it was entirely acceptable to wear a side ponytail held by a big neon scrunchie. I remember wearing a lot of long t-shirts (with the sleeves rolled up, leggings, and ballet flats. And, yeah, I had a stonewashed jean jacket. Do a Google image search or see if your parents' friends have Facebook pics from the 80s... that'll teach you a lot more than I can describe right now.

Even on my phone and laptop the wifi gets disconnected randomly but when its directly connected through ethernet its fine. I Thought it was my router i had a belkin so i just bought a new one cisco linksys and it seemed to help then it started kicking me off xbox live again. Please can someone help me with why my wifi disconnects so randomly and frequent! I Have a comcast cabel modem vonage box and cisco router now.

Answer
Try moving you wifi router to a different channel. It could be that some other electronics in your house is interfering with the wifi. I've seen cordless home phones and baby monitors completely kill certain wi-fi channels, forcing the router to a different one fixed the problem.

Failing that is there some way you can just used a wired connection? For something that doesn't move like an xbox cabled is always better if possible.

How to choose the best/fast Wireless Channel?

abc_123

I live in Switzerland, I'm using a laptop at home andI have a wireless router installed on my desktop computer. I still seem to have lots of lag while using the internet and I lose the connection at least 10 times in one evening.
I found out that it could be because too many people are on the same channel as me and I tried to mess around and see which channel was the best but I can't seem to figure it out.
I researched and saw that you can get some programs which can detect which signal is the strongest. I downloaded Netstumbler but it couldn't even detect my wireless signal!

Does anyone know how I can detect which channel is the best? Or what I didnt wrong while using Netstumbler?

Thanks alot¨!

Answer
Netstumbler is usually the best program to see what other channels are in use around you. If you don't see ANY stations, including your own, your card may not be compatible or you selected the wrong netstumbler driver.
Look on the bottom of the Network Stumbler screen, if you see
a yellow triangle with "No Wireless Adapter Found".. your wireless card isn't compatible!

You can always try the following method to find the best channel for you. First remember that the only totally "open" channels are 1, 6, and 11. All other channels have some "Overlap" to those channels.
Other channels do work but there is some amount of interference from adjacent ones. A small amount of interference is fine, its the LARGE interference that kills your internal signal.

Start with channel 1 check the coverage in your location if its good then use it.
If 1 isn't good then try 11 at the opposite end.
Then channel 6.
Once those have been tried use 3 and 9, 4 and 8
One of these will usually find a clear path for you.

Don't forget that things like Baby Room Monitors, intercoms, wirless cameras, cordless phones, wireless speaker systems, wireless keyboards and wireless mice can also interfere with your WIFI system! You may find one of those covering the entire range!

What is the frequency transmission of wifi ?

baby monitor 5ghz on ... 5GHz / 8 GB DDR3 Memory / 1 TB Hard Drive / Windows 7 Home Premium
baby monitor 5ghz image

Carlos

Answer
There are two different frequencies. The 2.4GHZ and the more modern less well supported 5GHZ.
All routers and mobiles etc can use the 13/14 channels available on the older 2.4GHZ frequency whilst some newer devices that support IEEE 802.11n specification can also use the 5GHZ frequency. In many built aup areas where there are a lot of wifi enabled computers using the more widely supported 2.4GHZ frequency you can get signal problems, also cross over interference from other wifi devices that use the same frequency range, eg baby monitors.
Some, but not all, of the latest IEEE 802.11n capable routers can use both frequencies simultaneously and as the 5GHZ frequency is less crowded, a better signal can be acheived.
2.4GHZ does have a longer range though.

wifi not working till technician is baffled?

nel

it's ok if i connect it with cabel, but the wifi has a problem.. i called the operator but she said everything is alright.. so i changed the modem, but it still won't work.. so i hired a technician to handle the settings.. it went well at first, but the problem came back.. even my technician is confused.. even the troubleshooter won't work.. what's going on? are there external wave frequencies disturbing my wifi?

Answer
There are several things that can affect wifi signal and things you can do to try and improve things

To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/chaâ¦

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_neâ¦

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wâ¦
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

I want to use my cell phone with my laptop as a baby monitor for my newborn so that I can set the laptop up with the webcam on the baby & then I can watch it on my cell phone. Something similar to Skype but not Skype because it won't work with my phone. At least I can't figure out how to. Thanks!

Answer
gmail has video chat similar to skype. but then like skype, you'd still have to teach your baby to hit the "accept call" button when you call into your laptop.

Is it okay to sleep a 2 month old on their tummy while an adult is present?

best baby monitor breathing sensor on Be careful How Your Baby is Positioned When Sleeping
best baby monitor breathing sensor image

Kipani

My twins always fall asleep during tummy time... Anyway it would be so great if I could just allow them to sleep that way since they're up 90% of the day and it's so difficult to get them to sleep any other way.

Answer
Babies naturally are more comfy on their bellies and the risk of sids depends on so many different factors. I myself asked this question a month ago and did some research on sids and then decided my two month old could sleep on his stomach. He is in a cosleeper right next to my bed on a firm mattress and a sensor pad that came with my baby monitor which monitors his movement and breathing. This monitor has helped put my mind at ease. Now we are sleeping 6-8 hours a night :) instead of 2-3 intervals.
I would say as long as your babies can turn their heads from side to side try it if you are comfortable.....

Is it normal to be afraid your child is going to die in their sleep?

Kelly s

I know it's irrational, but my daughter is 6 months old. I can't sleep because I'm so afraid I'll sleep and she wont be awake when I wake up. There are times I'll touch her just to make sure she is awake. Is this normal? Will it pass?

Answer
I have this fear too, although it has got better as my baby has got older (he is 10 months) and we are past the highest risk time for SIDS.

What I have found really helped though, is we have the AngelCare monitor, with the sensor pads. They sound an alarm if there is no movement from breathing. It has made me a lot more relaxed.

Mrs.

I'm talking about things that the baby likes, or things that make life more convienent. Not MUST haves, but things you really like having.

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Is it safe to use fetal heartbeat monitors?

I bought a graco heartbeat monitor and it actually works pretty good considering that I only paid $19.99 for it. I googled if it was safe to use and I didn't see any studies or suggestions on it. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.

yes they are safe to use, the only problem with them is it will make you panic if you dont hear the heartbeat one day lol. which just probably means baby moved to a different spot :)

How can I stop my cordless phone from interfering with my wireless router?

baby monitor wifi on Baby Monitor; Baby Camera; Digital Baby Monitor - China Wireless Baby ...
baby monitor wifi image

I dont kno

I have 2.4 ghz spread spectrum cordless phone that autoselects the clearest channel everytime you use the phone and there is no way to change the channel manually. I also have a linksys 2.4 ghz wireless router. Using the cordless phone renders my wifi useless 9 times out of 10. I have tried to change the routers wireless channel (possible values are 1-11 I think) but that did not solve the problem. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent this interference?

Answer
Each device uses the same frequency band (as do garage door openers, baby monitors, Web cams, ....).

You can change frequency bands for one or the other. Use a 5Mhz phone, or a 5MHz band WiFi gear (802.11a).

Reduce the relative signal strength seen by the 802.11b/g stuff you've got. Move the phone to the other end of the house. Move the laptop (or whatever) closer, leaving the phone in the same place, ... Add an antenna (probably a corner reflector (chicken wire may be a perfectly sensible material) for the rubber ducky type of antenna design most commonly seen) to both ends of the WiFi link (you may not have to physically crack open the radios at either end, but note that this dodge increases signal strenght in one direction (and does the same to receiver sensitivity). Since both the phone handset(s) and the mobile WiFi device (a laptop, probably) is also mobile, this isn't any kind of universally adequate dodge. Find a way to reduce the phone's signal strength (probably not possible to non-techie types) unless it's possible to say, put soeme absorbing or reflecting material between the phone and the WIFi radios. An experimental bronze foil covered wall, perhaps. Ought to work well if you can keep the two radio types out of each other's effective range. May not be possible in some kinds of interior decorating environments. consult with those in charge before trying anything like this.

Another dodge ito try to arrange that the WiFi antennas are a 90 degree polarizatino difference than the phone antennas (as usually used; if you have sprawling teenagers, this may not be predictable).
Since both devices operate (or probably do) in a spread spectrum mode, each will appear to the other to be a general increase in the noise level against which they must work. Changing channels (if possible) isn't likely to be very effective. Too much noise, no radio receiver will be able to make sense of what it hears.

Is there a way to detect if someone is using a wifi jammer?

Reprobate

My internet has been out for three weeks. There have been brief periods when it's working 100% on all devices. I've changed routers three times - same problem with each one. Cable provider has been out - they say all good on their end. I had the Geek Squad out too, but they arrived during one of those brief periods when everything was working.

Could someone be jamming my wifi? I just Googled wifi jammers and apparently they exist because I came across a web page that sells them.

Is there a way to detect if someone's using one in my area?

Answer
You can download an application called a WiFi Sniffer. This will show you all the wireless networks available in your area, and include more detailed information than your OS will tell you. I've used NetStumbler and Xirrus WiFi Inspector. They should tell you what network you are connected to and what channel your router is on. Next look to see if there are any other networks in the area on the same channel. If so, you could be experiencing co-channel interference. This happens when wireless devices (such as router and access points) are in the same area and operate on the same channel. Change your channel to lesser used channel (1,6, or 11) with a weaker signal. If your devices support 5 GHz, you might also try that.

Also, there are other devices that operate in same frequency band as most WiFi devices. These include microwave ovens, cordless phone, and baby monitors. The Sniffers only work with WiFi devices, it won't tell you about nonWiFi interference sources. There is hardware and software that will do that, but it has a high price tag.

I doubt someone has a WiFi jammer. If they did, its possibly illegal (subject to local laws). In the US, the 2.4 GHz range is unlicensed, and while a device operating on that frequency IS required to accept any signal, you may NOT operate a device with intention of causing interference. If I had to bet, its interference from nearby sources, check the WiFi scanners I suggested.

What support do you get after having a baby?

Hi, I have noticed that most of the people who are on this site are based in the States and was wondering what sort of support is offered to new mums over there... I have no intention of living over there but am just curious. I live in New Zealand and the support provided to new mums is amazing....
Everytime you have a baby, doesn't matter if it's your 1st or 10th you have the support and guidence of your midwife for the first 6 weeks. She will visit you in your home a few times a week then once a week until baby is 6 weeks. After that your bubs is refered to a Free service called Plunket. A registered Nurse sees you when your baby is 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, 9 months, 15 months, 2 years, 3 years & 5 years. they monitor your childs development and health and also provide any guidence or information needed. Between each plunket visit a Karitane Nurse will also see you and they also check development of motor skills and proved any info required on sleeping patterns feeding etc....
Along with the service is a Free calling number to Plunket Line that is availible 24 hours a day to answer question and provide you with info ideas and support whenever you need it.... (i called once when my daughter wouldn't sleep and they gave me some great suggestions to help settle her)
We also have a free calling health line Well Child who agian is availible 24 hours a day free of charge where a registered nurse is always available to asses any health concerns you have with your bubs and offer advice as to if medical attention need to be sought.
All our doctors visits for children under 6 are free through government funding and most prescriptions are funded to... some you have to pay a small portion for but most are free...
There is also PAFT parents as first teachers, which provided free training to anyone to help with things you can do to help your child learn and develop
Its pretty awsome support here in NZ!!!!
So whats it like where you live?
Our hospitals provied lactation consultants that can be contacted for advice and help at anystage whilst you are breastfeeding and any specialist you need to see are also free... my daughter has to see and orthopedic surgeon as she has congenital torticollis and our governement will cover all the costs involved... They also give you financial assistance for the first 8 weeks no matter what your income then if you earn below $64K a year as a family they will give you weekly payments to help with the cost of a new family... The more kids you have the more financial support you get....

I think that it should be compulsory worldwide to provide the sort of support we in NZ get for new mothers and young children/ families....
Thank you so much for all answering... it is amazing how differnt things are over there compared to here.... We don't pay anything to have our babies... Your midwife who you see through out your prengancy and for 6 weeks after birth is funded.... and additional specialist required at birth are free (i needed an obstatrician and 2 peadiatricians plus my midwife and 2 extras... horrid birth!!!) if a c-section is required its free, if the babys needs to go to neonatal intensive care its covered... How unfair that you are expected to pay for things like this especially when none of it can be prepared for as you have no idea what will be needed at the time...
i wish you all the best of luck!!!!!!

Answer
I'm a new mom and I have a 24 hour hot line with a registered nurse that I can use. Its free through my insurance. There are also free lactation consultants through the hospital I gave birth at. You call them and they call you that day or the next between 2-4 p.m. If you schedule an apt. with them, you do have to pay whatever the insurance doesn't pay.

We paid 11,000 so far for our baby, because he was in the intensive care unit for the first two weeks. So, nothing else I describe is free! Its expected in my area (Omaha, Nebraska) that you go in to see the pediatrician every week for the first month and then every two weeks for the next. After that, it varies. Since our baby was in intensive care, we had 6 approved home health care visits that we could use for the first two weeks he was home. If my baby hadn't gone to intensive care, we were going to pay 2,500 to give birth in a hospital.

We make around 50,000 in our household a year and my husband works for a well respected company (Union Pacific Railroad). If we were lucky enough to make closer to 25,000 a year, we would have all our health care paid for through the government. The government would also have paid for formula, if needed, and the rental of a breast pump. Last year, we were students and could have had everything paid for and we would have lived more comfortably than we do now with our current income. That's why everyone complains about a health care crisis in the United States!!! We will be paying off our babies bills for a very long time.

Geritol Complete????

Trudie

I was just reading what people have posted on here about them. can you get them in New Zealand???? I've never heard of them so any other information on them would help :-)

Answer

Does anyone have a success story about getting pregnant after using Geritol. I have heard that can increase the chances of TTC

Best baby monitor for transition to crib?

best baby monitor video and sound on best sellers the new york times best sellers children s books ...
best baby monitor video and sound image

Monkees

In your experience, which type of monitors have been the best (video? sound? the ones that detect motion and alarm if the baby stops moving?)? I'm going to Babies R Us tomorrow for a monitor and want to purchase the one that will result in the best peace of mind and safety for my 3-month-old. Thanks in advance!

Answer
I recommend the motion detector, it went off on my daughter once because she could not breathe when she was about four months. the alarm went off and boom right there to stimulate her. it gives you a great piece of mind to know if they stop breathing it will let you know

Our motion sensor never went off when our daughter moved, like sarah said hers did. It has a sensitivity sensor that you can turn all the way and turned all the way up it detected her wherever she was in crib.

What are you're opinions on the color video baby monitors?

128333

My aunt asked for a new baby minitor in her baby gift registry and I was thinking of getting her the Handheld Color Video Monitor from Target. Its $199.00 and I want it to be worth the money. Is it worth it? Anyone like it/dislike it? Please give me your opinions. I think it is really neat that you can see the baby and everything, but is it too good to be true?

Answer
I disagree with the above answer. We actually have a video monitor for our 6 month old son, and it's great! With regualr monitors, all you hear is the sound. You cant always tel whats going on just by the sound you hear. With the video monitor, you can hear the sound, and see what is going on as well. Sometimes, with just a regualr monitor, you will hear somthing strange, and run in to check it out, and it really be nothing. We had many false alarms becasue sound alone doesnt answer concerns.

The video on the monitor is actually pretty clear. On some, you can actually record on it too, incase you want to use it as a security camera!

Voltage rating for Fisher Price baby monitor?

best baby monitor usa image

chanthara

If anyone out there owns a Fisher Price Private Connection baby monitor (or for that matter any other baby monitor by Fisher Price), could you let me know what the voltage rating for the AC adaptor is? I'm presently in the USA, and as such am looking for a monitor that runs at 120V, 60Hz, but I may be moving to India in a year or so where the AC power is 230V, 50Hz.
Thanks.

Answer
Most of the Fisher Price models are 120V, 60Hz. The Fisher Price Surround Sounds and lights adapter is 120V, 60Hz, 7W.

Hope this helps,

Alan

What are some really unusual pets that i could buy in new england?

Austin

So im looking for an exotic/unusual pet for me to buy. Something that would be availabe in new england. And for people who get mixed up with england and new england, new england is north west of the usa

Answer
You should consider getting a reptile. Corn snakes are a good 'starter' snake, they are usually quite docile and very friendly and inquisitive. I once had a Corn that, whenever I got her out of her viv (viv = vivarium, the name given to a tank for reptiles) would go and investigate everyone in the room, never bit anyone apart from me (and it was my fault that she bit me). Corns are also generally good feeders, good shedders and don't grow too large (around 5 feet, with females getting slightly larger than males and quite thin, certainly not big enough to be a threat to humans, not even a baby).

If you'd rather go for a lizard than a snake, what about a pair of bearded dragons? 'Beardies', as they are affectionately known are a fairly small (around 15" nose to tail) lizard native to Australia. They are highly social and many develop quite a close bond with their owners, and anyone who regularly interacts with them. They will recognise people and will often show almost child-like personality traits, such as running up to the glass at the front of their viv to greet people, occasionally waving at you (this is actually a submissive gesture, they're actually saying 'I'm only little, I don't want any trouble. Please don't hurt me').

Beardies are also good feeders, and as they get older they actually become cheaper to feed because as hatchlings they have a lot of growing to do and so require more protien, meaning they need about 90% of their diet as live food (crickets, waxworms, etc.) and 10% vegetables/fruit. As they get older they need less live food and by the time they are adults they only need 10% - 12% live with the rest made up of fruit & veg. Beardies will quite happily feed from your hand (although they need to be trained to do this - it's not difficult, just hold food they like in front of them, eventually they'll take it - but do this while they are young, as sometimes they can be a bit over enthusiastic going for the food and accidently nip you, and bearded dragon bites, whilst not serious, do hurt quite a bit).

If you're after a more exotic reptile then maybe a larger snake (such as a boa or large python such as a Burmese, or an iguana or monitor lizard?

Answer
I would have you look at my registry but I actually just deleted everything I've gotten off of it the other day. I'm going to try and remember everything for you though....here it goes:

*car seat
*stroller
*carrier (sling or backpack type)
*crib
*mattress
*mattress pads (at least 2)
*crib sheets (at least 2)
*crib bedding set
*diapers (sizes newborn, 1, 2 3, 4, 5)
*wipes (preferably unscented so baby's skin isn't irritated)
*infant tub (there are some great infant to toddler tubs so you don't have to buy two different tubs)
*highchair
*booster seat
*playmat
*bouncer/bouncy seat
*swing
*changing table
*walker
*dresser or other place to store baby's clothes and stuff
*mobile (optional)
*nursing bras, tank tops, lanolin nipple cream, breast pump, breast pads, etc for yourself if you are nursing
*bottles (even if you are nursing it is always good to have a few on hand in case you want to pump at all or in case you become ill and can't breastfeed for a few days)
*pack n play
*sheets or pad for pack n play (at least 2)
*bassinet (optional)
*sheets for bassinet (only if getting a bassinet of course)
*blankets (definitely some receiving blankets, maybe some swaddling blankets, etc)
*clothing, bibs, hats, shoes, snowsuit if needed, etc.
*bottle cleaning brush
*pacifiers (optional)
*thermometer (rectal for sure because most doctors will ask you to take the baby's temperature that way when they are sick, underarm or another thermometer for other times when calling a doctor isn't necessary)
*grooming supplies (nail clippers, aspirator, brush, etc.)
*medication dispenser for infants
*gas relief drops and fever reducer
*diaper stacker and hamper (optional)
*diaper pail and liners (optional)
*bottle drying rack (optional)
*child-proofing supplies and safety gates if needed
*changing pad and changing pad covers (at least 2 covers)
*diaper bag
*diaper rash cream
*baby shampoo, body wash, lotion, baby powder, etc.
*activity gym
*those shade things for car windows
*baby monitors (they have motion sensor ones, just audio, or audio/video)
*first aid kits (preferably one for at least home and the car)
*boppy pillow (they are good for breastfeeding but are also good for propping baby up before he can sit on his own, tummy time, etc)
*baby mittens so he doesn't scratch himself
*cotton balls to clean his eyes, ears, his little fat rolls, and the umbilical stump if needed
*baby robe, washcloths, and hooded towels (optional but very cute!)
*toys and teethers
*laundry detergent

How far can a outdoor xfinity wifi spot signal go?

chuck T

like up to 0.15 of a mile?

Answer
An 802.11 wireless 2.4 GHz range is dependent on numerous variables including distance and interference. Interference includes anything in its way including walls, floors, glass, tree leaves, etc as well as other 2.4 GHz RF interference from other non 8.11 wireless sources like baby monitors, gate controllers, motion sensors, cordless phones, etc.

Because there are so many factors involved, it is nearly impossible to give you a straight answer.

If you need to go 0.15 mile (approx. 800 ft) and you have a clear line of sight with nothing blocking and no other interference your signal would be weak but maybe useful. I suspect it would be poor quality.

I would recommend using a wireless point - point technology to bridge the network.

Answer
On February 1st, 2012, I was home for work not feeling well. My fiance left for work at 7am. At 10am, I got a call from his sister. He had been in a head on car crash and was air lifted to a hospital an hour and a half away from where I lived. The hospital had gone through his phone to find someone to call, and had first tried "mom" and "dad", but they were on a cruise in the Bahamas and didn't answer. Next they called "grandma" who gave them his sister's number, and she finally he called me. The accident had occurred just 5 miles from our home, and I was only just hearing about it now. I called my mom to give me a ride, as I was crying so much I knew there was no way I could drive. On the way I called the hospital to see if they could give me information. They said they couldn't say anything about his condition, but that I'd better get there fast, and then asked me what religion he was. I was absolutely convinced that he was going to die before I got there. When I finally did get there, he was in a coma with a fractured skull, broken neck, broken pelvis, and lacerated liver. His brain was swelling and they had to put a halo on him and a pressure monitor in his brain. We called our pastor and he came immediately to pray with us. I had never been so scared in my life. They planned a surgery to fuse the broken vertebrae in his neck, but they couldn't do it until his brain stopped swelling, so for now it was just sit and wait. I ended up getting a room at the place across the street from the hospital, and spent a week and a half just waiting, not knowing if he would have brain damage or be paralyzed. When the swelling finally went down and he started to wake up they did surgery which was successful. After surgery they finally removed his breathing tube and I got to talk to him. He couldn't move his right arm, but he could move everything else and he had no brain damage. After months of physical therapy, he regained movement in his right arm and got his halo off just in time for our wedding.

June 9th, 2012 we got married. Our pastor married us, the one who was there the night of his accident. It was very emotional, and I had never been so happy.

On September 19, 2012, I found out that I was pregnant with our first child. Since then we have just been going to doctor appointments, slowly putting the nursery together, and anticipating the birth of our baby in May 2013.

I'd say it was one hell of a year.

why cant i focus at work?

Laura

on july 11 2012 i gave birth to my stillborn son. since then mt boyfriend and i have had lots of problems and its affecting my work. i cant focus, i cant remember anything and i cant concentrate. i feel paranoid, depressed and anxious.. it really sucks i work as a fulltime pharmacy tech so its very important to focus, and i keep making silly mistakes which are leading me into getting fired. what should i do? i seriously need adice

Answer
I had a stillborn in April of 2012. I'm so sorry for your loss. My baby died of a cord accident (so they think) at 41 weeks with no warning in a low-risk pregnancy. First came numbness, feeling a little better and functional, then two months later every joint in my body began hurting, which brought depression and severe anxiety. I know how paralyzing it can be.

First, see a doctor and a therapist. If you're having depression that arises from a situation, there are drugs you can take in the short term to calm you down, though your doctor will monitor your levels to make sure you're not taking more than is wise. Ativan is a drug that was recommended to me, and it calmed me within 10 minutes when a panic attack would arise. It made me sleepier, but it didn't inhibit my ability to function.

The hazy thinking can be from depression. I'm not pushing anti-depressants, and I don't recommend them to just anyone, but if you're not functioning due to what's happened to you, then you're the person for whom these drugs were invented. It helped me a lot. It got me out of crying hysterically all day and feeling like life was pointless-- to realizing that there is still hope, and though it hurts, life moves on. Your doctor might put you on something like Celexa or Zoloft.

But I'm preaching to the choir if you're a pharmacy tech, I guess. All I know is that the drugs have helped. It's been five and a half months since my daughter died, and I'm now slowly tapering off my anti-depressants, and I very rarely need an Ativan anymore. The mental clarity since beginning the anti-depressant was pretty noticeable. It was like a fog lifted after a few weeks. Maybe that will help you on the job?

Best wishes to you. I'm so very sorry.

How early can you hear the babys heart beat on the Home monitors?

Audra

I was just wondering how far along you have to be to hear your babys heart beat on the monitors that you can buy in the store? im 8 weeks is that too early? because i want to buy one but not if its too early

Answer
honestly...I think they are a waste of money and cause more stress then relief. My OB will not even begin to look for a heartbeat witha doppler until 12 weeks but prefers 14 weeks because even then she said its difficult. They found my baby's heartbeat at 14 weeks, but it was hard to keep it long enough to count. Those home dopplers arent nearly as good as the ones the doctor has and you arent medically trained to find a heartbeat. I know some people who were never able to get a heartbeat on it and were constantly calling the doctor saying there is no heartbeat when actually, they just couldnt find it, but the OB could.

Is there a good at home fetal heart monitor?

Red

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and I know it's a little early for a home heart monitor but I want to get one. What's the best one out there and how well does it work?

Answer
I have done alot of research on this subject and finally found:

3 Mhz BABY HEART BEAT DOPPLER MONITOR

You can find it for $75-$80 here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180316680050

This monitor works during early pregnancy and it is cheaper than renting one.
