What is the problem with my toshiba satellite and what are my options?

Heber

I have an older Toshiba Satellite running Vista, I think its like an '07 laptop (if I remember correctly). I want to look through all my pictures and transfer them onto my new HP Windows 8 laptop. I run into the issue that my lap top's monitor will not cut on, however the laptop itself is on (due to the fact that the power light is lit and you can hear the fan working, and the cd tray retracts when I push the button). Now, I have tried to connect the Toshiba to my tv through s video and vga, it didn't work. And now I tried my vga to my HP (I haven't tried usb from computer to computer). Here's the thing, I connect my iphone with the charging cable to my HP and it began to charge, however when I did the same on my Toshiba it would not charge. I am now beginning to think it is a deeper problem than just the monitor. I need to know if my monitor is not working for the same reason my ports are not working, what may have caused this issue, and finally what are my options? I cannot lose these picture because they are of my 3 year old daughter's baby pics and these are the only ones I have.

Also, this laptop has spent about a year turned off collecting dust, even when it is off for a day the battery is completely out of juice so I have to charge it every time I want to attempt to turn it on. I want to know my options from cheapest to more expensive; further, acquiring the pictures so that I can have them on my new computer and printing them is the only thing i care about, getting music and docs that I have is not important but would be nice to have.

Answer
Turn your Toshiba laptop over ad remove the Hard Drive from the compartment.
It will probably be IDE type so you can get a caddy for it and then connect that HD to your new laptop and copy your data over to your new system.
Once our done getting all your files then FORMAT the "old" HD this will then give you an external storage device that you can use to keep your important files on if you want.

How much would it cost to equip a home with deaf technology?

Katie

If you were to add a special smoke detector, door bell lights, vibrating alarm clock, TTY, and other technologies, how much would that cost?

Answer
I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying
ummm thats about it from what I can think of. Other wise for appointments and class and college stuff like that and for more direct communication I use a ASL (sign language) interpreter.
There are also High power hearing aids, cochlear implants and the BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) if you want to try and "restore" some hearing, or use residual hearing you may have. but note these methods are case to case and are not always effective and can fail

How much does it cost the first year to raise a baby and other questions.?

Katie-Lynn

I am not pregnant. This is a protect for school.

What is the annual cost the first year to raise a baby?

Second question. Im going to give you a list of newborn items. Tell me which items are TRULY NECESSARY.

Crib
diaper changing table
rocking chair
baby monitor
baby bathtub
bottles
bottle brush
bottle drying rack
baby swing
pacifiers
infant bouncer
swaddling blanket
play mat
play pen
carseat

Answer
Crib
Carseat
Bottles
Swaddling blanket
Play mat (can be used on floor as changing mat too)
These are the basic basic needs for me. You can get by without the others but not these.

The annual costs for a baby each year is different for every person. Some woman breast feed which is cheaper than formula. Others use cloth diapers which are cheaper than disposable etc.
I bought a pack of 15 reusable pea pod diapers for $70. These can be used from newborn right up to 3 years, so I only bought 1 pack of disposable diapers during the first year, to see what was better. Diapers are about $10 (new Zealand dollars) a pack. Babies go through about 5-10 nappies each day in the first few weeks, and then about 3-5 a day from around 4 months to a year. So do the math and it'll give you an approximate answer (get the price of diapers from your local supermarket).
If breast fed, it cost nothing. I breast fed, but I also bought a breast pump and baby bottles for $150 in case baby needed to be left with another person etc. if formula feeding, do some research online on the average formula used a month, and then times that by 12 (12 months in a year) get a price from your local supermarket.
Clothes- this depends on where you buy from etc, but I spent about $800 on all clothes up to 12 months. (including shoes, socks, togs, pyjamas etc)
I spent about $20 or so on baby shampoo, soap and powder every 6 or so weeks, so that's about $180 a year.
I bought baby towels and facecloths before my baby was born and they lasted right up until she was four. I spent $30 on 5 towels and a couple packs of facecloths.
Bibs- got given some at baby shower, but bought a few packs for $20 around about, these lasted the whole time needed.
Bassinet/Moses basket - needed for first 8 weeks, cost me $80
Crib- needed up until about 2- cost me $250
Stroller- needed up until about 3- cost me $150
Car seat- Bought a seat that was used from birth til 4 years. Cost $150
Blankets, sheets, duvets for crib- got given some at baby shower but probably costs about $100 for a couple pairs of sheets, blankets etc
Swaddling blankets- needed for first few weeks (I used them but not necessary) depending on brand etc but I got a few muslin wraps for $30.
Baby bath- optional, but I used one. $30
Medication such as baby Tylenol, gripe water, teething gel, teething powder etc about $50 all up the first year (depends)
Baby food- baby cereals, rusks, custards and other tinned foods probably about $90 a month (depends how much food baby eats. This price is based on my baby who at 7 months ate 2 tins a day, at $1.50 each) I also bought veggies and meat, and puréed these myself for baby. (this price will depend, as some babies don't start real food until a year old) my girl at 10-12 months was eating the same foods as I was.
Some people will put their children into childcare, this is another cost.
Where I live, medical attention for under 5's is free, but many people will have to pay for this as well.
Hope I haven't forgotten anything :)
Hope I helped!

In Canada, is it illegal for someone to listen in on my baby monitor? And how likely is it to happen?

Brick

Just wondering what the laws are here, can't seem to find much information on it. The monitor transmits on 49MHz frequency. The other day I happened to catch something that sounded like a walkie talkie and it made me wonder if I'm hearing that on my monitor, could anyone be listening to our family? Hopefully no one is, but I have caught my snoopy neighbours sitting in the dark, looking into my window once. I'm now pretty weary of them.

If this monitor is easy to listen to, is there a baby monitor that anyone knows of that transmits on a frequency that would be more difficult to listen in on?

Thanks for any info!
That is correct, it's a baby monitor. It's not a magical device that stops transmitting sounds that don't originate directly from the baby or within the baby's room. It is capable of transmitting any sounds near the room. I'm well aware that my baby monitor is not secure in any way, that's why I'm here asking. My question is about it being legal or not to take advantage of this monitor and use it to eavesdrop on a family. I'm not interested in "probably" legal, I'd like to hear from someone who knows about these specific radio laws here in Canada.

Answer
It is perfectly legal in Canada to possess and use radio equipment which is able to receive broadcast provided that the information is not passed on or disclosed to another person or people. It is illegal to decrypt encrypted or scrambled communications. Laws are laid out in the Canadian Radiocommunications Act.

Police scanners are perfectly legal. So are cell phone scanners. Equipment such as baby monitors and cordless phones are notoriously cheap and only operate over a limited range of radio frequencies. It is often possible for two different sets of baby monitors to be on the same frequency and hear each other just by chance. Most operate on frequencies not easily picked up by standard two-way radios, but one with enough money one can purchase radio equipment able to pick up those frequencies. However, in most cases, someone would have to be extremely serious if they wanted to listen to your baby monitor -- or just extremely (un)lucky that their system picked it up.

In previous jobs I've had access to equipment able to pick up the darnedest things. You'd be installing some equipment on a remote mountain top and then listening to a crane operator on minute and a couple of arguing fishermen the next. People do have a habit of assuming that no one else is listening.

You can look for units which have scramblers built in. You can use wired units. You can locate it against an outside wall with a (silvered) mirror behind it. You can find one which you can lower its transmitting power -- or in which you can take off its transmitting antenna. Try walking around your house with the receiver and see how far away you can hear anything. Many units allow resetting of frequencies -- you can do this every day -- and some even to this each time it is turned on/off.

What could be causing my child to have pain in her arms?

baby monitor nanny cam on ... Spy Nanny Micro Camera Pinhole System Receiver for Baby Monitor | eBay

Kandace D

My baby just turned two years old last month. The other day she was feeling just fine and I took her to daycare like usual. In the middle of the day, the daycare called and said she wouldn't lift or really move her left arm. I took her to the ER to get checked and the x-ray said she had dislocated her elbow. They said they snapped it back in place. After that she was back to her normal self. Today, the daycare called me again and said she wouldn't move either arm. I took her to the ER again and they believe that it could be muscle spasms. My baby acts normal like she's feeling fine she just can't lift her arms but a very little bit. She isn't acting any different nor is she walking different or anything like that. She's acting just like a normal two-year old that can't lift her arms. She said it hurts her to lift them and she will cry real tears if she tries to do so. I'm just trying to see if anyone has ever heard of this before and possibly knows what this is. Thanks!
In response to the answer given, wouldn't the arms out of socket show up on a x-ray? Also, by that evening, my baby was completely back to normal as far as I could tell. Thanks for all responses. I appreciate any help given at all.

Answer
Is she having any signs of her arms not moving at home?
From your question it has been both times at daycare.
If an attendant lifts your child up from the arms that can cause damage. It could be nerve damage, that will NOT show up on x-rays.
The fact that her one x-ray showed a dislocated elbow, that is caused from either tugging her and her not wanting to go, or lifting her up with her arms.
Either way this is not good for her.
My advise is to get a new daycare or have nanny cam access to her care so during the day you can monitor her and the level of care she is getting.
If the daycare refuses the nanny cam, then my hunch is that are pulling/tugging her and causing her this pain and trauma.

is illegal to record conversations on your own property?

USMC

i am talking about having a hidden recorder in a building and recording conversations on your property.how legal is doing this?

Answer
It would depend on your jurisdiction.
I would tend to relate it to using a "nanny camera" to monitor a baby sitter. In most jurisdictions the nanny cam recording and a telephone conversation recordings are two different issues.
Double check for your area but, If at least one resident or owner of the building are aware of it you should be fine. If your an employee with no "rights" to the building and your being sneaky you may find yourself in a lot of trouble.

Is being near an Ethernet cable dangerous?

Kenneth M

Just curious. Someone said it is more dangerous to be near Ethernet cables than it is to have wireless internet flowing through the room.

Please advise if you can thanks!

Answer
"Is being near an Ethernet cable dangerous?"
Not at all... unless you have it strung out across the floor where you could potentially trip over it and maybe fall and hurt yourself, or it is possible to strangle someone with an ethernet cable, LOL! Seriously that is pretty much the most danger an ethernet cable can pose. it's just a cable like any other cable; it's not even an electrocution risk; it is basically similar to the RJ12 cables your landline phone/s use and is just as harmless.

"Someone said it is more dangerous to be near Ethernet cables than it is to have wireless internet flowing through the room."
WTF?! Neither is harmful in any way at all ! WiFi= high frequency radio waves- lots of devices in everyday use for well over a century now, use radio waves to connect, broadcast and communicate (your radio, TV, cordless phones, RF controlled toys, baby monitors etc etc); if there was any danger, this would be very apparent by now don't you think? Wired telecommunications ( which is basically the same physical tech as that for ethernet) has been around in everyday life EVEN LONGER without any apparent harmful consequences. Whoever told you this BS is either having you on or is totally clueless and ignorant.

How much should your modem speed drop off when using a router?

Football

I receive 50 Mbps from my internet provider. When I test the speed on the hard connected computer it shows that the speeds I receive are within an acceptable range of that number. However, when using my laptop just one room away from the router the speed drops of to just over 5 Mbps. I expect some drop off, but that is ridiculous. Is the router just a piece of junk or is there something I can do to improve this? Thanks.

Answer
Although WiFi is convenient for mobility, wireless interference can cause it's connection speed and quality to vary wildly.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely. Remember, this is the speed of the WLAN connection between your WiFi device and the router, not the Internet speed.

There are also various backward compatible wireless standards.

802.11b = 11 Mbps
802.11g = 54 Mbps
802.11n = 150 (300 ) Mbps
802.11ac = 500 (1000 ) Mbps

For either Ethernet or WiFi, the connection speed will always negotiate to the speed of the slowest device.

For example, a super fast 300 Mbps wireless n router can only connect to a wireless g laptop at a maximum of 54 Mbps. Again, remember, this is the speed of the WLAN connection between your WiFi device and the router, not the Internet speed.

For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

That being said,

For stationary devices I always recommend Ethernet connections, however I realize that this is impractical for devices such as tablets, iPods, cell phones, etc.

For wireless connections, I would look at high performance routers or devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range.

One of my favorite high performance routers is the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006QB1RPY&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

However, Just because a particular wireless router model works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variances in the factors listed above.

In any case, You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

You could also try adjusting the position of the router or relocating your device closer to the wireless router to obtain a stronger signal.

Depending on conditions and the area that you wish to cover you may also need a wireless extender.

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats or regenerates them to extend the signal range to greater distances.

Here are the two most popular highly rated models on Amazon.

Securifi Almond - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0087NZ31S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0087NZ31S&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

Netgear Universal WN3000RP - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

No matter what you decide to buy,

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. To be sure any device will meet your needs, it is a good idea to download and read the user manual before purchase.

Good Luck...

Ever get creepy interference on your baby monitor?

baby monitor on phone on Parents reviews of Philips, SC361 Baby Monitor - Monitors
baby monitor on phone image

I can't re

Parents, have you ever picked up creepy or odd interference on your baby monitor? I live in a very populated area and I have picked up odd interference a few times.

Answer
oh yes! A number of times.

But the weirdest one was when my oldest was young.

My husband & I were getting ready for bed one night & I turned on the monitor. He was brushing his teeth & the second I turned it on I heard a man talking. It was so clear too. He was talking to a woman. We could hear both sides of the conversation. My husband thinks it them talking on a phone, not in the same house. So he thinks we picked up their cordless phone. This in 1997 or so.

I called my husband & he came in. The couple was talking about going somewhere & a hotel. I then recognized the voice. It was one of our neighbors! But he wasn't talking to his wife!!! He actually said the womans name a few times. Plus I knew my neighbors wives voice.

We actually listened for awhile. lol I know it was wrong but it was clear he was flirting with her & you bet she was flirting back. They talked about a buisness trip and meeting up at a hotel. No clear sayings of cheating but for sure flirting. He'd tell her what to wear and mentioned perfume. My husband & I then turned it off.

I could never look at him the same after that. My husband & I never said anything to the wife either. We were not 100% sure. But a month or so later they divorced & sold their home. We actually told our other neighbors then what we had heard. They had seen signs of cheating too.

What creeped me out was . . . could they have ever heard us? Plus for just that second hearing a mans voice coming from what I thought was my daughters room really scared me.

We have some cordless head phones. They at least 8-10yrs old. But we often pick up CBs from what seems like Truckers on near by highways.

A program that I can video call from Android phone to laptop with webcam?

I want to use my cell phone with my laptop as a baby monitor for my newborn so that I can set the laptop up with the webcam on the baby & then I can watch it on my cell phone. Something similar to Skype but not Skype because it won't work with my phone. At least I can't figure out how to. Thanks!

Answer
gmail has video chat similar to skype. but then like skype, you'd still have to teach your baby to hit the "accept call" button when you call into your laptop.

How should i take care of my baby Western Painted Turtles?

best baby monitor under 50 image

KoopDaKill

I have two baby Western Painted turtles. What should be doing to keep them healthy.

Answer
Paints actually only get to about ten inches...

The rule of thumb posted by one poster is correct... however, a 50 gallon tank is a decent size for a SINGLE adult Paint. Since you have two, you'll want a minimum 75 gallon to give your turtles enough space. There's really no need to buy 100 gallon tank.

You need a submerged heater to keep the water at about 80 degrees, and a floating thermometer to monitor it.

Give them a nice habitat to live in... with plenty of artificial plants floating around to hide in, and something to lay on or under on the bottom of the tank-- like a rock cave, maybe or log.

They also need a dock to bask on with a heat lamp over it-- the lamp should maintain about 90 degrees. The lamp doesn't need to be on 24/7. I turn mine on for several hours a day-- some keep the lamps on all day and only switch them off at night. Either way is fine, so long as the turtles get some basking time each day.

For their diet, I recommend Repto Min floating sticks. You can get this at pretty much any pet store. Feed them the sticks once a a day, and and another food source once a day. Try fresh lettuce greens like romaine, kale, or mustard greens. Cherry tomatoes are great, too. And though adult turtles are primarily herbivore, the occasional meat is great in their diet. Mine get worms once a week and shrimp once a week. Try night crawlers, crickets, ghost shrimp, guppies, or shad. Also, the occasional cray fish.

How do I get my hens to become broody?

AnimalLove

I want my hens to get broody so they can have chicks. It's hard to get a broody hen, but I've had one before. It's just a lot easier and cheaper than buying and monitoring and incubator and hand raising the chicks. Is there a way to get them broody? if so, please tell me. Thanks a lot!

Answer
Well, I have hens that set and I also bought an incubator. Having an incubator would pay off if your hen got sick and died and left eggs there. Thats why I have a 43 dollar one I got from tracor supply. It can hold 50 eggs at a time.

They will go broody on there own. I had a hen who had layed eggs after eggs. She finally went setting and there were 25 eggs under her. Most hatched. It all is up to her. So just make sure you have a nice nesting box with lots of straw/shavings in it. Also after she goes setting monitor the eggs by candling them on day 5-8 you should see veins and a baby. Make sure you throw out the bad ones, if you dont then the flys will lay there larva on them and eat it. Trust me that has happened and I cleaned out the nesting box and she hoped back in the box.

Baby Monitors: recommendations?

Q. Ok, we have the Graco ivibe monitors or whatever they're called, but they crapped out after one year and make this strange crackling noise so we need new baby monitors. I need one that doesn't get too much interference or much of a humming noise if its plugged into an power strip with other appliances. What Mhz's are the best (i know nothing about that) and what has worked well for you? I need help! I tried to different Safety 1st monitors and gotten no where with them..

oh btw my son is going to be a year old on the 29th, so the angel ones that monitor the hearbeat too are out of the question....i did always wanna try those ones though!

Answer
I love my monitor. It's a Mobi 2.4 GHz Wireless Color Monitor and it works awesome! It has 3 channels so if one has interference you can change it to another. I am sitting here right now watching my daughter sleep (it has night vision too); the monitor is just a foot away from the computer and there is no interference at all. It's very sensitive too. I can even hear her breathing sometimes! I don't know how the ratings are for them since I didn't do any research - it was a gift - but I would give it a 10 out of 10. It's so great to be able to see my daughter all safe in her crib sleeping instead of just hear noises from her room. Sometimes I just sit here and watch her sleep or as she's falling asleep. It's the sweetest thing!

***EDIT*** Oh! One more thing... It can be plugged in or work off batteries so I can carry it around with me if I need to; and the range is really good. I know they are pricy. I think it was close to $200, but it's something I can use for a very long time. You can even hook it up to your tv and record whatever is viewed through it (like a video camera). I have even used it for surveillance once when I was worried about an ex who still had a key to my door (long story) and I wasn't able to get the lock changed right away. I just set it up so I could watch the entrance-way and it really put my mind at ease. I'll probably use it down the road to record events. You can even view your baby sleeping on your big tv when it's hooked up. I just love this thing!

is it normal for my one month baby to only sleep 3 hours a day?

Lizbeth

and all she wants all day is be on my arms i dont know what to do...

Answer
Oh my-- I hope you don't have an experience like I did.

My son, pretty much from the moment I brought him home from the hospital didn't sleep. After 5 months and VERY little rest, he was finally diagnosed with a sleep disorder (Benign Neonatal Sleep Myoclonus).

He would sleep maybe 6-8 hours total in 24 hours...and most of that was at 30 minute intervals. I was so sleep deprived I don't even recall much of the past 5 months and it was hard to enjoy his infancy as he just cried all the time from being so tired, and he also had terrible colic.

What I did find out, as I feel I am now a baby sleep expert having a baby who NEVER slept is the following:

-rock, nurse, bottle, pacifer...etc...whatever your baby uses to fall asleep, do it in a dark room with silence (or try a sound machine but babies BNSM HATE noise of any kind, so my son needs silence to fall asleep)

-swaddle or try not swaddling (i swaddled but when I finally gave it up, after 2 days of adjusting to no swaddle he sleeps better)

-sing or hum (this helps some babies fall asleep)

-try sleeping her on her tummy (I KNOW I KNOW...but what is worse? A baby who never rests or one who tummy sleeps...sleep deprivation increases SIDS risk too so pick your battle). Buy the Angel Breathing monitor and video monitor if you find she is better on her tummy...my son has slept on his tummy since 3 weeks and still does

-I use Colic Calm (CVS carries it)...but not so much for colic as for the chammomile (sp..sorry) that relaxes him

-Try to put her down AS MUCH AS YOU CAN...the more you hold her, the most this will perpetuate. I don't believe in crying it out alone, but my son has certainly had to manage while I put dishes away or fold some laundry...he can see me, and I talk and shoosh him as best I am able, but babies do need to learn to self soothe but this can be taught delicately so it doesn't traumatize them like leaving them in a dark room without you around

-Finally, to answer your question, no this is not normal and if it continues, talk to your doctor. Monitor your baby's sleep-- what is causing her to wake?

Good luck!

Sure..? I mean the mere thought that someone could easily hack into such is a bit scary. I mean, be it no harm was done, the risk of this happening again and such is very much likely and disturbing, specially if it was the next time intentional and meant to do say harm. Then again this gives people reason to be wary of whatever they buy or rather to check on things more than simply agreeing and blindly buying or rather giving 100% trust to anything that is able to connect via internet or so.
I find that, be it may sound weird, that is say a good sign or rather wake up call for many, specially whom are so dependent on these say newer contraptions, that it isn't all that safe, that there is always a risk.

Hi, my parents are always pressuring me to help them buy a "wireless" modem/gateway for our DSL service, because they don't like cables connecting everywhere, but I am a little confused on this, because we already have "wireless internet gateway" that acts as a modem/router combination and it supports wifi connections...

So my question is, is it actually possible to have a literally "wireless" gateway that don't require any cables to plug in to it...? Or did my parents get the definition wrong and "wireless" really means wifi connections?
I mean is it actually possible for a "wireless" gateway to not require any cables at all? Even no power adapter required?

Answer
There are completely wireless devices that can provide broadband Internet to multiple devices via WiFi.

You may be able to get a WiFi device from your mobile broadband provider such as the MiFi. The MiFi device connects to the Internet via a cellular data plan and provides wireless routing functionality.

The MiFi is a very small, portable, self-contained device that uses a rechargeable battery.

A MiFi is convenient. I used one in the past for work and travel.

When wireless mobile hotspots on smartphones became commonplace, I cancelled my MiFi and started using a wireless hotspot app on my smartphone.

Same functionality at a lower cost, the add-on data plan is much cheaper than paying for two devices. I just turn it on on the phone and can connect up to 8 wireless devices.

You have to pay for a mobile data plan from your cellular provider.

Be forewarned that most have low monthly data limits and buying more is expensive, so you wouldn't want to use it to stream a lot of Netflix movies or try and replace your home DSL or cable Internet service.

I have a 6 GB shared family data plan and find that more than adequate, you'll have to monitor your mobile usage for a few months and upgrade or downgrade your data plan to match your usage. Verizon emails me an alert when I have used 50% of the data allowance. I usually receive this late in the billing cycle so I have never exceeded the data limits.

That being said,

For home use you are much better off with a DSL, cable, or fiber optic Internet service. Most of these types of providers have much larger monthly data limits of 150 GB or more. Here is a blog post on current ISP data caps: http://isp1.us/blog/current-data-caps-for-us-isp-providers/

You can either use a wireless router (which has much better WiFi range than a portable device such as a MiFi) or a gateway such as you use.

Another point,

WiFi connections are convenient, especially for portable devices such as tablets, laptops, etc., however convenience comes at a price.

Unless you specifically need a wireless connection, I would not generally recommend it especially for a fixed device such as a desktop PC or for a device used for serious online gaming or video streaming.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 20 Mbps or drop entirely.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

For good consistent speed, your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Remember, for Ethernet or WiFi connections, this is only the local network (LAN) speed. Internet (WAN) speed is determined by your ISP. For example a 3 Mbps Internet connection can only provide 3 Mbps even if connected to a Gigabit Ethernet network. No router or connection will make your Internet faster than 3 Mbps.

The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

Good Luck...

what camera should I get?

I want to be a photographer and at some point take pictures of more than babies and weddings and things like that. I want to take professional pictures so I need a really good camera even though it will be expensive it will be worth it. I'm just not sure which one is the best.
by the way I love taking pictures of newborns and wedding and things like that. How could you not? but I want to do other things too.
no I'm not. so far all I have is my phone. this is more for the future when I've had training.
I mean at some point I'm gonna have a really good camera that I know will be super expensive but what I want for now is something that is a good camera to get me started for around 1000 dollars or so.
don't worry. I know that its more about the photographer. ive always been good with art and creative things and I take good pictures now with just my phone and ive definitely considered the costs of everything else. thank you though! your answer helped a lot!

we went to l&d yesterday and the baby's heart rate was much lower than normal, however the nurse would not listen to any of her concerns and sent her home. What should she do now.

Answer
Go straight back to L&D and ask them to hook her back up to the monitor, make sure that they are aware she has felt no movement in 24 hours and do not leave until they agree to put her back on the monitor.

I am 17 weeks pregnant with twins. When will my babies really start moving around?

I can feel them every once in a while, but it is by no means frequent. I have a fetal heart rate monitor and I listen to them daily, so I know that they are fine, but when will they be moving more? Thanks!!!

Have you ever tried at home baby heart monitors?

Willie

I am considering getting a baby heart monitor so that we can see if we can hear her heartbeat at home. Has anyone ever had any luck w/ the ones from target?

Answer
i'm not sure about the target ones but i was thinking about buying one from walmart and based on the reviews i read for it i'm unsure whether or not to go ahead and get it.
2 reviews said gave it good rating and 2 gave it bad ratings.

heres the link for the one i was looking at:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5983010

its only $20 so i guess if it doesn't work it isn't too big of a loss. plus you can always return it.

if you do decide to get one make sure you read the reviews. they're very helpful.

so i couldn't be more of a help.
