Please help me shop for my new baby daughter.?

Wookie

I am pregnant with a daughter. :) very excited that it was a girl. (God granted my wish ) HAHA- Anyway, i am new to this motherhood thingy, i am just wondering what should i prepare for my daughter, what are the important things that i should be getting for her?? i am 21 weeks pregnant..

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only about sixteen bucks i think and it mixes it without bubbles and foam and you can make enough for 24 hrs at the ti

Super confused, do I need an infant car seat or a convertible car seat?

Your Highn

The convertible seat says it can hold babies from 5 pounds on. A couple on display had cushions in em that looked like a newborn could fit in them and be cozy and safe, but the rest didn't. When I tried to ask a store associate if the rest came with those cushions and how they functioned for a little baby, he didn't really know and said they aren't really safe for infants, they're meant for older babies and that I needed an infant car seat instead and the hospital wouldn't let me leave without one.

I don't know whether or not to believe him, I mean if they were not safe for 5 pound babies they wouldn't say that, you know? That's just a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I'm so confused....

Answer
Health store associates have no idea what they are talking about. Car crashes are the leading cause of both disability and death for children under 12 years of age. Statistics even show that more than 95% of child safety seats are used or are installed incorrectly, even among the most educated parents. This is why it is very vital to get your child's car seat checked by a child passenger safety technician (CPST). One can be found at http://www.seatcheck.org/

There are two types of car seats that you can get for a newborn- an infant car seat or a convertible car seat. Infant seats come with a separate base that gets installed in the car. You can click the carrier in and out. Most infants outgrow their infant seats from as little as 4-6 months of use to as much as 12-18 months of use.

Infant car seats should absolutely never be placed on top of the shopping cart (where normally a small toddler would sit) as this causes the cart to have a higher center of gravity- it makes the cart top heavy. Infant car seats are not designed to attach to shopping baskets. It may seem like it clicks into the basket, but when the cart falls, baby may crash into the hard floor. Thousands of children are injured every single year due to these falls in the United States. It is fine to place the car seat *in* the basket.

You can get a convertible car seat provided that the harness straps can be adjusted at or slightly below a baby's shoulders. (When rear facing, the harness straps must be positioned at or slightly below a baby's shoulders, to prevent baby from sliding towards the top of the shell during a crash). This means that the lowest harness slots should be low enough to fit your baby's torso- I would look at car seats with slots that are lower than 7-8 inches.

Some convertible car seats come with infant inserts that you place either under or on top of the cover. These inserts are designed to lift a baby up for a better harness fit. Always follow the weight/ height limits on these inserts.

Even the Graco Snugride 30 infant car seat has a 4 lb preemie weight limit, and it may not even fit preemies well. http://carseatblog.com/9256/graco-snugride-30-review-the-snugride-infant-seat-for-smaller-babies/
Above link: A review on the Graco Snugride 30 written by a child passenger safety technician (CPST)

The safest car seat is one that fits your child, your vehicle, and is used correctly each and every time. A hospital cannot make you get an infant car seat for your child as long as the convertible car seat fits your baby. The hospital may want to do a car seat stress test. It is hard on a newborn's body to be in a reclined position- the hospital may want to strap your baby in their car seat to monitor your baby's heart rate and oxygen levels, so you may have to bring the car seat in the hospital.

For convertible car seats for full-term newborns, I would look into the Cosco Scenera, Cosco Apt, Evenflo Tribute, First Years Truefit, Evenflo Triumph 65, Evenflo Symphony 65, Evenflo Symphony 65 e3 model, Diono Radian R120/ RXT, Graco My Ride 65, Graco Size4Me 70.

The Cosco Scenera, Cosco Apt, and the Evenflo Tribute are great budget seats- these seats typically last until a child is around 3 years old as children WILL definitely outgrow these harnessed car seats by height before hitting the weight limit on it. (The child will outgrow these seats forward facing because when a child is forward facing, it is extremely important to have the harness at or above a child's shoulders). This means that if you do get a convertible car seat like the Cosco Scenera, then you will need another harnessed car seat in the future like the Evenflo Maestro ($80), which has 18" top harness slots and a 50 lb weight limit with the harness.

And some convertibles (even infant car seats) may be too upright for your baby. All newborn's car seats need to be installed at a 45 degree angle to keep the baby's airway open. It is dangerous to have a baby's head flop forward. To get the car seat more reclined, it is absolutely okay to place up to 3 pool noodles or 3 tightly rolled up towels in the vehicle seat bight. This video shows what I mean:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5HnuYzFtWM

https://sites.google.com/site/carseatmeasurements/
Above link: A list of car seat measurements. This is actually very accurate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULJ8Vx79Vv4
Above link: This video is about the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations for child passenger safety. The AAP recommendations highlight to keep a child in each car seat stage for as long as possible. This is because when a child moves from a rear facing car seat to a forward facing car seat with a harness, and from a forward facing car seat with a harness to a booster seat, and from a booster seat to a seat belt- each step up in car seats is a decrease in your child's level of protection.

Baby monitors are necessary?

Mccoy

Not long ago at a friend's house see the baby monitor, feeling pretty good, everybody thinks that baby monitor is necessary? Where to buy some affordable baby monitor ?

Answer
A baby monitor is not necessary. It is convenient, but not necessary.

We have an average size home and I could always hear my babies even without the use of a baby monitor, even though we had one. I would sometimes go outside and the baby monitor would not work properly, when it would have been most convenient, because I was too far away.

Then again, my little ones never slept away from me either- they roomed with me.

I found the monitors most convenient when they were OLDER as I could monitor what was going on and stop arguments before they progressed.

What is a baby monitor and how it works?

Amina L

I have an elderly client with this baby monitor. Is it possible to move it just like any other electronic by unplugging it and plugging it in another room? So that if I move from room to room I can still monitor that person. I do not want to mess with it by taking it off without knowing anything about it.
I would like to plug it in another room where I can turn on light and read, not to disturb the client and still hear hear her via the monitor.

Answer
A baby monitor can be 1 way , 2 way, an now they even have one with a camera attached. It usually has a base that you keep with the baby and a hand held you can walk around with. The 2 way allows you to hear the baby and speak back if you want. They work really well and its a great way to keep track of babies and small children while in another room or doing house work.
I have used these many times working in healthcare having elderly patients.

mommy to a

I need one that's clear and has a decent picture. I just really want to get the cheapest one I could but I don't want to compromise quality..links would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer
I got the summer day and night. it was a bit more than $100 but I am happy with it. the thing is that we really only use it at night, so the color aspect of it really doesn't matter much for us.
we bought ours new on ebay and saved about $50 off the price which got it close to the $100 you want to pay.

what is the difference between stereo headphones and earbuds?

Iffy

I just bought some Bose stereo headphones for my husband, but started to panic cause I'm not sure if they are compatable with his ipod or not... does anyone know if they will be? Thanks!
Also, the pic showed that they were not the large old-fashioned head phones. They appeared to simply slip in the ear, there was no surrounding material. I got these from Amazon, so it was too late to ask once I paid!

Answer
Stereo means that there are 2 independent channels being played. It gives the illusion that the sound is coming from the left, right, behind, or in front of you. Most headphones do this. They just don't advertise it because it usually goes without saying.

To SpitFire, headphones is the general term. They aren't noise cancelling in all cases. Some do the exact opposite. Sound goes out for open headphones. See Grado. Only about 2% cancel noise. Closed headphones isolate noise, which is almost the opposite. It gets rid of the baby crying behind you, but usually won't get rid of engine drone.
In ear monitors are a more formal name for earphones.

Any ideas................................?

Jake

I can't hear anyone that shouts at me from downstairs because i have headphones on.
Is there something i can make or buy that notifies me from upstairs that somebody wants me to go downstairs e.g for tea.
thanks for reading :)
please don't just say take your headphones of........

Answer

And if you MUST wear them: A baby monitor [they light up(?)]

Advice on a Graphics card?

Dalton

OK, so get ready for a mouthful: i have a windows 7 Toshiba P505 laptop with core i7 processor. i baby this computer as its 18.4 inch screen and fast processor make it a great desktop replacement computer. But it has a wimpy Intel graphics media accelerator integrated graphics unit. and because of this it's impossible to upgrade it without serious tinkering that would void my warranty. So i found a external graphics unit that allows you to put any graphics card with no external power requirement into it and plug it in to my computers expressport and wala. instant great graphics. But im having a hard time finding a good graphics card that doesn't require a external power source. the best one i could find so far is the ATI 5670. Can anyone direct me to a good card? THZ
PS: the external graphics unit is the Vidock2

Answer
Firstly, I doubt you would void your warranty by just removing the cover, which is all you need to do to install a graphics card.

Anyway, the HD5670 is currently the best graphics card out there without an external power requirement but it's still seriously underpowered compared to your i7 processor.

I'd recommend you to check with your dealer on the warranty issue as there is absolutely NO tinkering involved in installing a graphics card. It's easy as plugging in a monitor or a printer or an external graphics unit for that matter, only inside the case. And not to mention the inherent lag of an external graphics unit since there is no direct communication between the motherboard and the graphics card.

I'm having a c-section tomorrow morning. Should I be scared?

Mommy of 2

Answer
I had a vaginal birth with my first one and a c-section with my second one. I would take the c-section any day.

I know you are excited about the birth of your child but are probably seeking the "What to expect when you're having a c-section" book. Well, to my knowledge that book doesn't exist but I can tell you what happend with me and my c-section.

1st: They will take you back and shave your pubic hair a little bit...just the top inch or so.

2nd: They will at some point have started your IV...I already had one since I had been in the hospital for 5 weeks...so I don't know exactly when they will put yours in.

3rd: They will take you back first and get you set up. The OR will be cold...I still maintain that mine was like 50 degrees. They start your spinal/epidural and lay you down on what I thought looked like a cross. Some people have had their arms tied down but I asked that they not do that because I couldn't handle feeling "trapped".

4th: They will put up the screen, get your belly prepped, and make sure you are totally numb.

5th: They will bring your husband in and start on the surgery.

6th: You'll feel them tugging and talking to you. Our doctors were really good about telling me exactly what was going on, I'm sure yours will too.

7th: You will hear the sweetest sound in the world. The sound of your little one taking his/her first breath.

8th: They will take care of the baby and your husband will likely be taking pictures while they stich you back up.

9th: You will go into recovery for about an hour so they can monitor you but you'll be able to cuddle your little one so time will go by quickly.

10th: You will slowly be taken off your great drugs and you will begin to feel a fair amount of pain. The first time you stand up, cough, move, etc. you will have your breath taken away. It is rough going but the more you get up and move the faster you are going to feel better though it is hard to believe at the time. It is a hot pain and pretty much sucks but you will be okay and it will be worth it.

Good luck and remember to take things slowly at first and allow yourself to heal and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

A 2-way radio for a baby monitor?

Brian

So I was thinking.... instead of buying a baby monitor from babies r us or somewhere for $50, which we would use for a while then it will have no purpose, I thought about buying a 2-way radio for about $50 from radioshack since it will have a purpose after we are done using it in the baby room.

I always wanted one and we can get a good 10 mile range one for the same price as the baby monitor. I can just hold down the button on the receiver in the baby room with a rubber band or ziptie or somthing.

Will that work you think?

Im also thinking about getting a seperate video system.

Answer
Baby monitor units generally plug in, while the radios will go through a lot of batteries. That will probably eat up your savings.

They usually don't get worn out, so you can check a resale shop, garage sale or Craigslist for gently used ones.

I need to plug in an American baby monitor into an African outlet. The American monitor only has an input of 1?

Kristie

I just moved to South Africa from the USA. I have an American baby monitor, amongst other things that I need to be able to plug in. I already bought some of their outlet converter deals that you plug into the African jack and then you can plug your American item into itâ¦..BUT my problem is that the INPUT on the monitor is less that 220 Volts. I know it will blow it out if I try and plug it in.

I think the North American standard outlet input is 120 V. But the African outlet input standard is 220V.

Is there something I can buy to be able to increase the voltage the monitor can take? OR reduce the voltage going into the monitor from the African outlet.

Surely there is an engineer or electrician out there who can help me!!! HAAA

Answer
Buy a step down transformer from the electrical shop.

Trying for a baby?

must<3dogs

My husband and I love the idea of having a family and can't wait to get pregnant so we make sure to follow the fertile days on our calendar and we were only able to do it on 2 of the fertile days this month..this probably sounds so stupid but do you think I will get pregnant or have to try and try? I want a baby sooo much!

Answer
1. Have sex three times a week.

Having regular sex is the best way to get pregnant. Couples often try to time everything perfectly for ovulation but do not have sex when they think they are not ovulating. It is true that sex that is not within the time of ovulation will not result in pregnancy. However, because women do not always ovulate when they think they will, having sex three times a week will help to a woman cover her bases, so to speak, and not miss an opportunity to get pregnant.

2. Use an ovulation prediction kit or fertility monitor.

Using an ovulation kit to predict when you are ovulating will improve your chances of getting pregnant. For many women charting or other methods of ovulation prediction are too confusing. Ovulation prediction kits work by reading LH surges prior to ovulation. They are relatively easy to use and are generally accurate for predicting ovulation. Fertility monitors, such as the Clear Blue Easy monitor, are also a worthwhile investment if you would like to get pregnant faster. Fertility monitors are similar to ovulation prediction kits in that they read changes in LH but they also read changes in other hormones and donât require any guesswork for couples. They are easy to use and will tell you when the best time to get pregnant is.

3. Have sex before ovulation (not after).

Sometimes couples get confused about the best time to have sex in relationship to ovulation. You have a small window of time each month to get pregnant. After a woman ovulates the egg will survive approximately 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, will live for up to three to five days. This is why having sex two to three days before ovulation will increase your chances of getting pregnant. Donât wait until the day you ovulate to have sex. Your partnerâs sperm will last longer than your egg and you donât want to miss an opportunity by waiting.

4. Donât rely on the Calendar method for predicting ovulation.

A lot of couples have heard to have sex around day fourteen of your cycle. This is based on the calendar method and assumes that you have a regular 28-day cycle and ovulate mid-cycle. Although this is better than just picking an arbitrary day to have sex, it is not a very accurate way to predict when you ovulate. Many women do not ovulate on day fourteen and knowing precisely when you ovulate will help you time intercourse better. Ovulation prediction kits, looking at previous months bbt charts, or watching for body cues will help you to determine when you ovulate.

5. Charting may not be the best way to predict ovulation.

Charting is great for tracking your cycle but it does have disadvantages. By the time you can see ovulation on a bbt chart, you have already ovulated. It is good to chart so you can track your cycles, see if you ovulate the same time each month, and also so you can look back on your cycle and see if you timed things right. But if this is your first cycle trying to get pregnant or if you are not ovulating at the same time each month, an ovulation prediction kit would be more helpful.

6. See a doctor before you start trying to get pregnant.
Make sure you are in good health and have had a regular check up from your OBGYN or medical provider. Untreated infections, sexually transmitted diseases, or poor health can affect your chances of getting pregnant. Its good to see a doctor as well as start taking prenatal vitamins prior to trying to conceive.

7. Donât smoke, drink alcohol, or abuse drugs when trying to get pregnant.
This may seem like common sense but many women do try to get pregnant while smoking, drinking or using drugs. Smoking, drugs, and alcohol can affect your fertility. It will also affect your unborn child. It is important to stop smoking or using drugs and alcohol before getting pregnant and not wait until you find out you are pregnant.

8. Have enjoyable sex.

Sometimes when couples are trying to conceive, sex becomes a job or function of reproduction and is not as enjoyable. Plan a romantic evening or try something different to spice things up. How you are feeling sexually may factor into your chances of getting pregnant. Some researchers believe that having an orgasm during sex increases your chances of getting pregnant. For women, the spasmic movements of orgasm will help pull the sperm into the uterus and for men a better orgasm may increase the manâs sperm count.

9. Have sex in positions that keep sperm inside the vagina longer.

The missionary position is a good position to use when trying to get pregnant. Avoid positions where the woman is on top. Gravity will allow sperm to leak out with these positions. Also try placing a pillow under your hips to help tilt your pelvis and keep the sperm in longer. Donât get up right after sex. Try to relax and allow the sperm to stay in the vagina as long as possible.

10. There is no such thing as trying too hard to get pregnant.
Most couples get pregnant within a year of trying. If you have not gotten pregnant within a year consult your doctor for advice.

Have you tried this Baby Monitor?

Q. I was wondering if anyone has used a Fisher Price Sounds n' Lights Monitor with Dual Receivers??? My grandpa is very hard of hearing, and we were wondering if anyone thinks it will be loud enough for him to hear my gma (they sleep in seperate rooms) if she needs help in the middle of the night. She fell out of bed once and had to wait until morning to shine a flash light through a mirror to get his attentions across the apartment!!! (they're in an assisted living facility, but if no one knows she needs help....so please don't tell me its time for a nursing home)

Answer
Spend more money on a better-quality monitor. We have one and it's okay because we only use it for brief periods here and there; if it was on all the time I would've thrown it out in a rage long ago.

It is very static-y, prone to picking up other people's conversations and radio and so on, and generally kinda cheap.

Turned up loud enough to hear your Grandma, he will also be getting a boatload of static much of the time.

Note the less-than-glowing reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Sounds-N-Lights-Monitor/dp/B0009T2CB2

One thing about it that I find sucks is that the button to turn it on is something you can press and think you've turned it on, but sometimes it turns out that you needed to press it a bit harder. It's fiddly and irritating and, given its purpose, not terribly safe; there should be no ambiguity about turning a baby monitor on or off.

I'm looking at this book "Baby Bargains" (a must-buy!!!). They have a section that tells you which monitors they think are best. Here's what they say, broken down in good, better, and best:

GOOD: Fisher Price Sounds 'N Lights (starts at $20), no fancy features but a really good starting point
BETTER: Graco's imonitor ($55 single, $90 dual receivers), has digital technology, rechargeable batteries, and 2000 foot range.
BEST: Sony BabyCall NTM-910 is the top rated and starts at $40. Does a lot of fancy stuff, which you might like or not.

My advice is to go online and read customer reviews as well. I got Summer's video monitor for my shower, but this book doesn't happen to endorse these kind because of too many parent complaints.

Target Baby Registry!?

Ree

I've just signed up for my first registry at Target and I have not one single clue where to begin. I've never even held a baby, let alone know what all they need :)

A little help, mommies?
I'm having a baby boy!

Answer
Baby room furniture if you don't have it yet.

Stroller and carseat or travel system

High chair

Booster seat

Breast pump/storage bags/bottles

Boppy

Receiving blankets

Baby swing

Bouncy seat

LOTS of diapers

Baby wipes

Wipe warmer, if you want it

Baby bath tub

Baby essentials - shampoo, lotion

Baby grooming kit with nail clippers and all that stuff

Baby thermometer

Medicine - children's tylenol... better to have, than to have to run out and get it when baby is sick

Desitin for diaper rash

Extra car seat base if you need it

Diaper bag

Baby carrier/sling - the maya wrap ring slings are the best!

changing pad and cover

Bedding set and sheets

Warmer blankets and/or swaddle me wraps

Safety things like for the plug ins when baby starts moving around

Baby gate(s)

Feeding sets

Bibs

Trainer/sippy cups

Spoons

Rocking chair

Diaper genie

Sleep positioner if you plan on using one

Basinnet or pack 'n' play (Check out the Arm's Reach Co-sleeper bassinets, they're wonderful!)

Nightlight

Baby monitor

Activity gym and/or playmat

pacifiers if you plan on using them

*Some good advice I got when I was doing my registry - DON'T register for toys or clothes, that stuff is too cute to pass up, and people are going to buy you more than you need even if you don't put it on your registry.

Good luck!!!!

Where to find baby monitors?

kira

Im looking for the baby monitors that alarm you if the baby has stopped breathing or change in heart rate etc. and if they are a good investment as far as how good they work?

Answer
I've seen them at babies r us and target. According to SIDS alliance and AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) they do not reduce the risk of SIDS. However, if it puts the you at ease I believe it is a great investment.

I just bought a regular one.

Here is a website for one:

which cordless phone is better a 2.4 ghz or 5.8 ghz?

jl5ha

does one have a greater receiving distance from the base than the other

Answer
neither!!

I would go with the Panasonic DECT 6.0...!

These channels are reserved exclusively for voice communication applications and therefore are less likely to experience interference from other wireless devices such as baby monitors and wireless networks. DECT devices made for use in the U.S. use the brand DECT 6.0 to distinguish them from both DECT devices used elsewhere and U.S. cordless equipment operating in the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands. The "6.0" is a version number (as in software), not a spectrum band; the term "6.0 GHz" for DECT 6.0 phones is incorrect, since it operates at 1.9 GHz.

I Need A Cordless Home Phone?

~I need a phone system that doesn't interfere with wireless internet.
~Expands up to 6 handsets

~Price Doesn't Matter

Answer
Personally I like the Panasonic KX-TG1032S. It's a DECT 6.0 phone which means it operates on a frequency dedicated to cordless phones. You will not get interference from WiFi, baby monitors, microwaves ....

has anyone tried castor oil to induce labor?

Q. my due date is december21,2012 this is my first i went to the doctors and im half a cenemeter dialated and my friend said to try castor oil and it workd for her ?has it workd for anyone else

Answer
Yes my sister and your friend is a whack-a-doodle to put it kindly for even suggesting you drink that poison.

At 38 weeks my sister took this - it gave her extremely violent contractions - it put my niece in fetal distress which caused her to pass meconium prior to delivery

She spent 8 days in the NICU - 4 of those we didn't think she was going to make it through the night!

If this is what you want for your new baby?

"The authors of the review conclude:

Castor oil does appear to stimulate uterine activity although the mechanism remains unclear. No healthcare professional would consider administering an unknown quantity of prostaglandins or not monitoring mother or fetus after attempting to stimulate labour. Yet this is.. what occurs when women are advised to take castor oil. Uncontrolled uterine activity can occur... Hyperstimulation can lead to fetal distress and the passage of meconium which increases the risk of intervention"

Am I losing my mind? Please help (sleeplessness, anxiety, paranoia)?

Sarah

I am a new mom. This problem did not start recently, but it did subside for awhile. I constantly think someone is going to murder me. Only past a certain time. Past midnight the thought slips through my brain and then it grows worse. By 1am I start thinking that I should go to sleep because the thoughts will only get worse. By 2am I start obsessing. 3am and I swear someone is out there watching me, waiting to burst into a window or door at any moment. I have glass on my front door and it is blurred in areas, but you can still see light from across the street through it. I swear, I will stare at that blurred light waiting for it to disappear because there is someone walking towards my door to get me. I'll plan escape routes in my head. I think "what would I do if I heard someone breaking into my babies room." Sometimes I imagine it happening and I become paralyzed in my bed thinking they are waiting for me to get up and check on him. The feeling of terror wraps my throat and abdomen. I'm scared that I don't know how to use a gun to protect myself.

This started when I was little. It was a fear or dark or monsters, from what I understood at the time. I shared beds with my sister until I was in 9th grade because I'd be so scared. Well the fear got worse when my brother died because I was convinced he was going to haunt me around the time that he died every thing in Feb of 2012 until I had my child in Sept of 2012. Then the fear went away for awhile. I think I was just so exhausted from being up every night that I couldn't have time to think. Now I have more time to think about it, it's coming back, except for worse. I've never had it this bad. I'm 22 years old and I don't know what's wrong with me. I can't sleep anymore. I sleep for few hours a night, and it's all because of my head. I think I hear things over my son's monitor and try to listen to the white noise for voices in his room.

Oh when my brother died I'd have visions every night of him dying over and over as I was trying to fall asleep, although those disappeared.

I obviously need to talk to someone, but I have no insurance. I don't know what's going on with me.

Answer
I don't think you're crazy. But you are the one who controls your brain, so you can work harder and get better at controlling it. We ALL have that challenge one way or another, so don't feel alone.

For sleep, try the remedies here:
http://earthclinic.com/CURES/insomnia.html

You can also look for books in your library about curing insomnia. Be sure to get exercise. Exercise causes feel-good chemicals to get released in your brain, so sometime while it's light out go for a good run. Run in a heavily populated area or take a friend and some pepper spray. When you can't go outside to run, then find exercise videos on youtube and work out in your living room. If you can afford it, go join a gym and work out. Hard exercise helps us cope with stress and it helps us sleep.

Use meditation. There is a lot about it on the web, and a lot of good guided meditations on youtube.

Use affirmations. There is a lot about that on the web, not sure about youtube but you can look.

Meditation and affirmations are very powerful tools that can help bring you peace.

Go to PetFinder and adopt a nice big guardian type dog like Newfoundland or Great Pyranees. These are calm Gentle Giants that will not get you sued, and can be good with your kids and later with their friends. You can sleep like a baby knowing there is a good protection dog in your room. Dogs hear things at four times the distance we do. I sleep like a baby with three dogs. If they don't bark I know anything I heard wasn't important.
http://www.petfinder.com/

Train your dog. Great videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/kikopup?feature=watch

Put pepper spray in your nightstand top drawer.

Smile a LOT. Every time we smile our brains release feel-good chemicals. There's been a lot of research on that.

Eat healthy. You might also have a bad sensitivity to some foods you're eating. Go to the library and get the book, "Eat Right 4 Your Type." Then for the next month avoid all the foods on your "Avoid" list and see if that doesn't make you feel a lot better. I've heard a lot of people say it's nonsense but it has always worked well for me and for a lot of other people I know. When I bought that book at a huge health food store the lady told me that book had gotten more rave reviews from her customers than anything else she'd ever sold.

Put a second voice in your head -- a best friend voice. Every time you think bad thoughts, have that voice chime in and tell you to knock it off. And when you run yourself down have it tell you that's silly and not true. I think that's what "be your own best friend" really looks like.

I hope I've given you some good ideas that help you.

Are plain, old baby monitors adequate?

Mariposa

I'm being a bit proactive and have decided to educate myself on all these baby gadgets. I had a pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage, so even though I was only pregnant a short time, I remember how stressed I was trying to figure out all of this stuff.
So my question is... I thought baby monitors were a dime a dozen. Never knew there were motion sensors, 49 mhz and 900 mhz, video, laptop viewable, etc etc etc. The reviews saying how some mother's felt their babies lives were saved by the motion sensors got me into "paranoid-mommy-to-be" mode. When I was little, everyone had those Graco, lights when the baby makes noise versions. Does anyone find that these are perfectly adequate for their babies, or are the motion sensors/video models really a better choice? Keeping in mind that I'm trying to restrain myself from one day spending thousands of dollars on things a baby will use for a year. :)

Thank you!

Answer
I didn't use one - we live in an apartment, were never going to be that far from the baby, I'm skeptical about gagetry, and I had a sixth sense that alerted me whenever my little one had a hiccup in the next room.

If I'd had a big house I might have gotten a simple monitor, but I think a lot of these things are designed to separate you from your wallet ...and will surely rob you of more sleep than you can afford in general.

Just my $.02 - and I know how it feels to be prenatally paranoid. I'm sure I had plenty of my own issues although this wasn't one of mine. :)

How to change frequencies?

Heres my situation. I am in need of security cameras because of crazy people, and I am also in need of a video baby monitor. So i bought both *actually had the baby monitor for awhile now* and realized I bought things on the same 900 mhz frequency.
How can I change one or the other so that they both work?
I have the summer infant baby monitor and security man freecam cameras.
Any info would help! Thanks!
Thats another problem. I'm not even sure who to call.

Answer
some low cost 900 MHz devices have no frequency selection capability and if yours don't have that capability, you can put a switch on the power supply for each camera and turn the camera on depending on which camera you need. it is very difficult to go in and modify the transmitter and receiver frequencies without some RF test gear, like a spectrum analyzer (really important) and RF signal generator, (somewhat helpful.) these are not normally available to the casual experimenter. if you had the test gear available to you, then it is a lot easier to tune the circuits so they are not on top of each other.

Baby Shower and Registry question?

and so it

I have a baby registry and pretty much everything in there is the cheapest I can find from $7 to $30. I probably wont know some of the people invited, so should I let them know I am registered or just my family and friends? What if I send out the invites to everyone with a small note that says:
"Gifts not required. However, if you feel so inclined and need an idea feel free to visit our registry at Walmart" or something like, "Gifts not required, but if you want to get one and need some ideas check out our registry at Walmart"
And the registry would say, "Thank you for taking the time to visit our registry. Please don't feel obligated to get anything as your presence is the best gift" Or any combination of the 3.
I don't want to sound like I don't want anything but I also don't want to come off as tacky or greedy. Also, what should I add to the registry or not add to the registry. Thanks in advance.
Im not throwing my baby shower, Im just doing the invitations.

Answer
When you registered they should have given you registry card. You include those in your invites. So people know where you are registered. Some people will buy you things that aren't on your registry, but most people buy you what's on there. I wouldn't put a note on the inside that says anything about gift not required. A baby shower is meant for people to buy the new expecting parents what they need for the baby. People realized that. If they don't want to buy you something, they won't. I added everything to my registry. Just in case someone wanted to buy it for me, you never know. Like, my grandma and 2 great aunts are going in of the bedding together (that was $180.00). Plus, at Babies R Us, whatever you don't get off your registry close to your due date, you get a 1 time 15% off. So I did everything, in case someone doesn't get me the more expensive things, most likely won't, but then I can get it cheaper. I added diapers, wipes, bedding, sheets, plain white onesies, a few toys, pack and play, travel system, bouncy seat, swing, all the decor for the room, mattress, bibs, bottles, bath stuff (baby tub, shampoo, first aid kit, thermometer), baby monitor, everything. A place like Babies R Us, gives you a guide to what you should register for (you can get the list online). They told me register for 3-5 gifts per person invited. Hope I helped! My shower is this weekend!

How big of a cage should I get for a baby Savannah Monitor?

ZoeMonster

I don't really want to end up buying 18 cages throughout the course of his life.
& when he's fully matured is it okay to have him out wandering in my room?

Answer
You can start with a 40-50 gallon. But, they grow 2ft within the first year, and will need a 4x8x4 viv. Allowing a monitor to roam your house presents some problems. They have sharp claws and are very destructive. They can also carry salmonella in their skin. Monitors are not cats or dogs they don't like to be handled. They are deep burrowers and require 18-24 inches of substrate. This is especially true of females the need to dig so they can lay eggs. If they don't have a suitable nesting site they may retain the eggs and die. Read this website, it is one of the most complete guides to savannahs I have found. http://savannahmonitor.org/

Coping with my baby being in the hospital?

mtgcnv67

My baby is 12 days old, and tonight will be his 3rd night in the hospital.

I went in to see a Lactation Consultant, expecting to be gone for 2 hours. He had a rash on his chest that I asked the doctor about, and since I was just sitting in the room pumping milk for the test, she decided to call a pediatrician in to take a look at him. She took more interest in his firm, bloated-looking belly than the rash, and sent us down to have some xrays done. The xrays showed a little bit of gas built up, and she sent us to a children's hospital.

We're still waiting for the test results, but the doctors here are leaning towards "Hirschspring's Disease": there are nerves in the intestines that retract and contract to slowly push gas and waste through...HD is a LACK of those nerves, so gas and waste just build up until the pressure is so big that they sort of "explode" through. It makes it very hard and painful to go to the bathroom and pass gas.

If it's found early enough, they can just do a surgery to cut out the section without the nerves and connect the rectum to the closest part where the nerves do work; the child can grow up to be normal and not reall yknow the difference. However, if the problem is beyond a certain point, then they have to surgically do a "stoma", where a hole is cut in the abdomen and the intestines are pulled out through the hole and waste passes out into a bag for the rest of his life.

We're still waiting on the results, so we're not sure if it's HD or not, but all the signs point to it. I'm doing okay coping with the hospital itself; he's got IVs and monitors hooked up to him, but he's a lot more quiet and content than he was at home (struggling to eat and pass stool/gas). It's the thought of the "worst case scenario" I mentioned, and the fact that I read online about "if you've had one child with HD, then you're more likely to have another child with HD". These are the things that are upsetting me, and I'm not sure how to handle it.

It's hard enough to think about your child growing up "different", and being self-conscious about being "different". Internet and doctors tell me this was not my fault, but I can't help but have the guilt of bringing this child into the world who's going to suffer his whole life. And now, the thought of having more children with a similar disease is making me afraid...we wanted 3 kids...but right now, I'm afraid to try again and risk bringing another child into the world who must suffer.

I haven't told my husband about this fear; mostly because it just started and we're not together at the moment (he went home for the night; I'm staying at the hospital). But I'm afraid of what he's going to think when I tell him I feel this way: will he be worried/upset that I may not be willing to have more kids? will he be willing to support me and this idea, or will he hold a grudge if I ask to stick to it?

How do I cope with these thoughts, fears, feelings? How do I live with the thought that this poor child is going to suffer through life because I brought him into the world with this disease?

Answer
It'll take time to cope. Don't ask so much of yourself. You have to go through the guilt and process it. You're built to adapt - to anything like this, in time. You can't live with emotional suffering, and the suffering itself changes your thinking, changes your perspective, teaches you how to accept. Nobody can tell you how to do it. You have to go through. Even if it were true that something you did led to your son having a condition, you would still have to adapt.

The people who are telling you about faith in god - I'm not a believer in a god, but having children taught me about faith. Faith is the key. You have to recognize that it is out of your hands. You might feel you were rational in your decision to have children, but there is an irrational element to it that is unavoidable. Reproduction is a drive. Even the sex is not rational - it sort of does us, as much as we do it. Making babies - it happens for us, through us, at least as much as we "do it."

Look at that baby. He's beyond you already. You can only do so much for him, just like you could only do so much to ensure his health while you were pregnant. It is out of your hands. It is the work of nature, of the world of flesh we are part of, of god or whatever - and you must accept, you must put your heart at risk and have faith that your best is good enough, your love is enough. It will always be that way - and having to understand that and surrender to it, makes the difference in you, that turns you into a mother. It is why becoming a mother is a passage. You have to go through to understand. It is hard. But we all do it.

You have plenty of time to worry about the pros and cons of having more children. Plenty! Years. Put that aside for now, let it be uncertain until the situation with your little boy is stabilized. Take for granted that your husband most likely already understands your feelings and fears, which are totally natural. He surely has similar ones. All that is needed is for you to trust one another. Best wishes to you and your boy.

How do they turn a 1960 movie into an incredible picture, HD? I got freaked out tonight!?

Q. Tonight I saw a movie filmed when I was a baby (1960). We watched it on TV and it was upgraded to look like UNBELIEVABLE pictures, like it was filmed yesterday! How do they do this?

Answer
They have sophisticated software that takes old film, load it into a device that pulls the image up on a computer monitor screen. Then the fun begins. The software they use can enchance each frame of the filmby digitally re filming it , restoring the color, clarity , and the soundtrackBut it's a tedious process that involves many steps.(and it's very expensive)The American Film Insitute has a site online. They're involved in restoring old, decaying films. You can read a lot of fascinating articles about how they do it.
Over 60% of the films made in 1970 and going back to the 1940's are dust now.

How can I answer my sons questions from the internet about the bible?

Moving For

Please no athiest nonbeliever and troll comments. Show some respect.

Forgive me for sounding disgruntled. This question is for fellow Christians only. I am one of the many who will attest to the internet being an unholy influence on our children. Unless you can be there to monitor everything that is being said and done there is no way you can control what another person says to your baby over the internet. I know that during my days of ignorance as to how much damage the internet can do to a child my boy has picked up ideas and influences from TOTAL STRANGERS! reading the questions here have confirmed my fears. The athiest have overrun this place and many other places making it an unsafe environment for our children.
My boy has asked things like why did GOD "sacrifice himself to himself"- Having asked him where he gets all these doubts it has been confirmed to me that these are ideas that have been learned on the internet.
Is it ever OK for me to say that I just don't know? I have never had to outright rebuke blasphemy like this before and am unable to go about answering these questions without some sound advice. I will be meeting with my pastor but meanwhile I would much appreciate input from the Christian community.
Please send prayers my way

Answer
a great thing to have is the YouVersion Bible app that can answer many questions about the subject with a simple keyword. It is free (to my knowledge) in the app store for iPod touch and iPhone. I'll be praying!

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265802

Hope this helps.

Looking for a good baby video monitor?

The last one I tried would only have the screen on when the baby made a sound. I want one with an option to have it on all the time, sound or not, or by voice. Also, one with no or very little interference would be great.

Why does WIFI lose quality and speed the longer you stay on?

Q. Seriously, I'm computer retarded and just wondering why it does that. It goes from 54mb/sec to 10 or less sometimes.

Answer
If you speed is dropping then it is nothing to do with how long you have been connected it must be down to another problem.

Generic advice for improving wif reception [you give no info on the router or what device you are connecting with]

To start with the basic rule is to position the wifi router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/chaâ¦

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_neâ¦

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wâ¦
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

How do I connect to a Modem that is in another room?

Mista J

I have a PC that did not come with any wireless abilities. I bought a wireless adapter so that i can connect to the internet but i feel as if its running out of days and that i would be much better off just having a cable running from the modem directly, but its in another room. Like on the other side of the house. I have a laptop that doesn't really get into as much problems with the connection as my PC does which makes me think its the adapter. Also I found out thtat the one PC that is connected directly to the modem gets great internet. How can i get better internet without having to change much. Is it my possible outdated adapter? How could I resolve this.
Some of these observations may be obvious and my issue might be minor to some but i could use some help and advice.
Thanks for your time :]

Answer
To answer your titled question first. Apart from wifi you can still connect via hard wired ethernet cable if the router/modem is an another room, if you don't mind the cable clutter. You can buy 25metre even 30metre plus ethernet cables on amazon for under £10.

As regards, problems with wifi reception and reduced network speeds there are several things you can do to try and improve performance. You don't give any details on your hardware or network configuration, so general advice will have to do:

Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Babysense (resiratory monitor for baby): Someone knows it?

Amalthea

Hi.
I am looking for information about a respiratory monitor to prevent death caused by respiratory cessation (apnea). If you have used it with your baby I would appreciate if you could tell me your experience with it.
Thanks!

Answer
The babysense monitors simply register movement, not actual breathing. Since a baby is never truly still, it works quite well. An alarm sounds if no movement is detected after 20 seconds. I used one with my son and loved it - actually he's 2 and we still use it, just for peace of mind. I prefer babysense over other brands because you get two pads and can cover the whole cot/crib.

baby monitors which.......?

~~~~
what brand of baby monitor did you use?have any links and why you used this particular one?thanks to all!
Answer
I have the AngelCare monitor by BeBe Sounds. It comes with a pad you put underneath the mattress that detects breathing, and if 15 seconds go by with no movement an alarm sounds. Don't ask me how it works, because I have no idea. It has never gone off except once when she scooted to the corner of the crib. But it does work if she stops breathing, because if I take her out and forget to turn the monitor off, it starts beeping like crazy. Definitely helped me to sleep better at night!
Video baby monitor with ip capabilities?
Jack
Twin baby girls on the way and my wife and I are looking for a video baby monitor. I would happily throw down some more dough if they made a video baby monitor with ip capabilities so I can watch them at work. I would buy just a good ip camera but I cant find anything that can link a wireless handset to it. If there are any solutions without having both a monitor and then a separate camera please let me know. Thanks.
The ip setup isnt the big deal. The problem is that we'd like to set up a portable monitor (as seen with regular vid baby monitors) to use around the house. The home portable monitor would be the primary use, while the ip settings will be my selfish way to still be with all three of my girls =)~... Let me know if theres means to accomplish =) thanks.
Answer
I have heard of a friend-of-friend who uses the following setup as a dog monitor (to watch the dog from home via webcam) which might work for you:
1. wireless IP camera setup to view whatever you're after,
2. create a skype account to run at home,
3. set the skype account to use the IP camera for video calls and
4. set the skype account to auto-answer incoming video calls.
he can then video-call from his own skype account at work to the dog's account and see what's going on throughout the day. and the camera can be moved to a new location without moving the computer.
the catch is, you can't operate the panning of the IP camera via skype. if you need this, perhaps something like Team Viewer might be better - it's a remote desktop app free for non-commercial use, that will let you remote in to your home computer and access the IP camera controls that way (Team Viewer is REAL easy to use).
for your case, I suppose you'd want sound as well, so seek out an IP camera with mic (if you want to hear them) or with both mic and speakers (if you want them to hear you too).
**Edit** Oh, I see what you mean - you want a portable receiver unit with a screen to relay the video to. I had a poke around and came up with not alot.
I can find wireless cameras with receivers (usually 4 cams + 1 receiver) - ie. glorified baby monitors,
and I can find a couple of iPhone apps to receive a signal from an IP Camera (see links below), but no IP Camera portable receiver.
When will tmobile come out with the iPhone?
sockssoxs1
I have seen articles and reports that T-Mobile will carry apple products in the new year (2013). When can I expect to see the iphone 5 on T-Mobiles network?
thanks
Answer
I let my friend (coworker) who owns an iPhone 5 use my Note 2 just to compare, and showed him how to use it.
I then asked him why people prefer iPhone 5 over the customization that Android gives. He had no answer to that (he did attempt to say that the iPhone was simpler to use, and I described that the it was true that even babies could use the iPhone, but the Android only takes a day to customize to ones wants and needs), just that he never knew Android had gotten so good. He then offered to trade me his iPhone 5 and a gaming screen he had previously used for his triple monitor setup. I stoutly declined.
This sounds like I'm just trying to spite you because even if the events that I have just tried to describe are false (and they are not), they are impolite.
So I won't educate you on the benefits of the Note 2, and Android as an OS, and why I'm not here to start a war, but merely to inform you that iPhone is definitely starting to fall off as a feature full phone every generation. Every generation, the iPhone is declining. I won't speak of it anymore, and just try answering your question without killing myself over how much a tech geek like me needs to tell you how much better Android is. All you have to do is research and use google anyway if you wanted to know, right?
So about iPhone on T-mobile. You probably won't be seeing the iPhone 5 likely appear in next month. After that, they will be very eager to get the iPhone 5 if they truly are considering offering the iPhone 5 (they already offer the Galaxy Note 2, though... OOPS what am I saying?!?!). So around 3-4 months? Yep very likely.
But don't buy a phone on a contract. You will end up paying more. Do you wonder why contracts lock you in and lower the price on phones? It's not really because they want you to stay (well yes they do), but that they gain a better profit anyway. They lock you into a plan that is very bad compared to prepaid plans so every month you will be shelling out tons more money for tons less service. Let's say you pay $90 every month for the same service you get at $49... There you go. 2 year contract = 12+12 = 24 x 40 = 960. You will be shelling out an extra $960 along with the small fee you payed with the phone when you signed your contract ($200 maybe?).
See, I'm just trying to educate you on what choice you should take: prepaid.
Prepaid? Look at Straight Talk, Solavei, T-mobile Prepaid (hidden because they like you using contracts), there are many great options. Check them out.
Any advice for a new laptop user?
simply_col
Hey,
I just bought my first laptop. It took me a really long time to save for it so I want to make it last as long as possible.
It's an Acer, I love it.
Anyhow, I was wondering if you could offer any advice, most of everyone I know have desktops so I really don't have anyone to ask.
My one friend said she recommends I get a cooling pad because if my labtop is sitting on my lap I could easily block the vents on the bottom and fry the things inside. If thats true, that's the kind of advice I'm looking for!
So anything advice you have would be awesome.
Also it had a nice sleek black pannel on the outside but the only problem is it shows finger prints like no other...Is there anything I should not clean it with?
How often should I clean the keyboard and with what?
Thanks!
Answer
general computer use policies:
1. do not, do not, do not, eat/drink around it if you are clumsy. or if you think you may become clumsy around laptops. you would laugh if i told you how many people come to me with "i spilled mountain dew on my keyboard, what now?" type of situation.
with pc's, that's easy. buy a new keyboard. with laptops, that's usually "buy a new laptop".
2. don't do anything you wouldn't do to a baby. i.e., don't leave it upside down, don't leave it in extreme conditions (e.g. on the floor on front of the heat, or on the window sill), don't let it sit in filth (laptops have holes in the bottom, dust likes holes, laptop hardware doesn't like dust), etc.
3. don't leave it on carpets, speakers, etc. all you need is the smallest spark of static for something to shortcircuit on the motherboard and everything to go to hell.
4. don't power it up and down constantly. that goes for desktops just as much as laptops. if you need it to be on and off (you travel during the day), hibernate or standby it. don't shut down entirely 60 times a day. computers are not built for that.
5. this sounds stupid, i know, but, don't shake it under the pretence of "getting the dust out of the keyboard". just, don't. anything with water is also in this category.
6. don't clean it with *anything* other than special liquid and cloth that you buy in best buy/circuit city. grab one of the working nerds and ask them for monitor cleaning liquid. it's around $10 and it will clean anything that's sensitive. including back panels.
7. always be aware that there is a lot of things working in the background while you're just surfing the net. things get hot. one alternative is getting a cooling pad (watch the sizes, let me know if you find one for 17"), but what you should always be careful about - vent openings. be careful so nothing is obstructing them for a long period of time.
8. don't be internet-stupid. internet-stupid = downloading anything and everything, watching porn on suspicious sites, believing that you *will* win that iphone if you click on the commercial, etc. again, you would not believe how many people go for that.
9. clean the junk regularly, schedule virus/spyware scans (schedule it for 4am, if you don't want it to intrude on your working time), defrag the disc, clean the registry, and do it all on regular basis.
the baby will be thankful and will serve you many years to come :)
just use common sense.
Sleep Help! Nightmare! School Tommmorow!?
Emily
I NEED to fall asleep. I am posting this from my iphone. I fell asleep at around 10, and was asleep on/off. I had a nightmare that I was seperated from my family, and woke up sweating, crying,afraid, and very thirsty. I tried to calm down, but soon after went into my moms room(my step dad, mom and baby brother r in there) to ask her if she had a glass i could fill w/ water, because i did not want to go into the kitchen downstairs. I told her i had a nightmare and asked her if she had a glass, and she said to fill my hands w/ water cause she didnt have a glass. I felt better after seeing her my step dad and baby brother. I found an old snapple bottle and filled it w/ water, then washed my face and went to the bathroom. I tryed to distract myself from the nightmare, but couldnt stop thinking about it, so I put on a movie I love to watch if I cant fall asleep,on low volume. I am still having trouble falling asleep. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fall asleep?
Answer
Most people don't produce enough melatonin because their lighting isn't properly controlled, melatonin is the hormone your brain makes that tells you to go to sleep and stay asleep.
You need to get light on during your active periods, dark during your calming down periods (so like 6 hours before bed turn off or dim lights/monitors)..
Here's a link that'll describe it a lot more thoroughly, I guarantee you'll sleep better in the future (nightmare or not) if you read it.. Take care.
need advise from females in Singapore (1)?
Carolina H
I recently moved to Spore and found out that I was pregnant. When I visited a GP, she said for my pregnancy I can chose whether to continue visiting a GP or other choise was to refer me to a specialist. Pls advise, does expecting mother in Spore visit a GP or a Gynaecologist? Is it enough only to have a GP to monitor the pregnancy?
Answer
Well, I'm not in Singapore, but I don't know if there are many people on Y!A who are. I'll go ahead and let you know my exp with a GP vs a Gyno, even though I'm in the US. I don't think things would be too totaly different.
My first I had a GP. He was great. He was just REALLY busy because he also had to take care of other people with various health issues. (Sick kids, etc) GPs are fully qualified to care for you, it's just not their specialty.
With this pregnancy (#2) I have a Gyno and I like him alot. He is alot gentler than the GP and has more time for me and my issues. He also has a better bedside manner. The main issue is that I've had to do alot of waiting in the waiting room for him to finish a delivery. I wouldn't change though.
My advice is to get recomendations from people who are pregnant or who have recently had babies. They will be able to tell you whether or not their doc would be the one for you. Whether it be a Gyno or a GP, as long as you get a doc you are comfortable with you should be just fine!
Good luck and congrats!
Now that the world is a lot more diverse is it difficult to determine which nation a cricketer should play for?
Half Drawn
A friend of mine that I used to play cricket with has just had a son. He has an English dad and a South African mum. His wife has a Kiwi father and an Australian mother but the child was born in Brazil. The dad supports England in cricket but SA in rugby, I'm not sure where his wife's allegiances lie.
Let's say his son becomes a great batsman or bowler, who should he play for? I know he would walk into the Australian team even as a baby but how should his nationality be determined?
RSRD: I will mail you a link to his Facebook profile if you want? There are pictures of the little one there. These kind of things aren't so uncommon.
Answer
Countries are getting more n more diverse with each passing day.
Princess Diana's death was the best example of globalisation.
An English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend crashes in a French tunnel, driving a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whisky: followed closely by Italian Paparazzi on Japanese motorcycles; treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines. And moreover this is sent to you by an INDIAN, using American (Bill Gates') technology, and you're probably reading this on your computer, that use Taiwanese chips, and a Korean monitor, assembled by Bangladeshi workers in a Singapore plant, transported by Pakistan lorry-drivers, hijacked by Indonesians, unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen, and trucked to you by Mexican illegals.
The world is now a global village my friend.
