How can I control a number of linear servo motors wirelessly?

tom

I am trying to make a cabinet for a tv so that the tv will rise out of it, I would like to control it either by app or less preferably a remote. Does anybody know how I could approach this? I have been told to use a rasberry pi but i'm clueless really.

Answer
I am not a programmer, but you could use existing apps to control the raising of the TV. There is an app called IP Cam Viewer that works with most any inexpensive wireless pan/tilt baby monitors (like Foscam FI8910W), from anywhere in the world via the smartphone and your WiFi router. The camera pan and tilt motors could be removed and used to operate a linear actuator switch (up or down moves a DPDT switch). I think some linear actuators come with limit switches built in. So just add a dc power supply, the linear actuator, and the DPDT switch controlled by the up/down motor of the Foscam. The camera could be focused on the screen to verify its position if you were somewhere else.

Internet acting weird.?

Brandon

So I'm using an Android (No Iphone trolls saying Android sucks or anything) and I'm literally a few feet away from my router. I'm on wi-fi yet I get 2 bars. I never get 3. This became a recent issue. I have disconnected my router and installed its drivers again. Turned off my phone. And also had tried connecting over and over. Any suggestions to fix this? And also how to improve internet speed slightly?

Answer
The internet is weird because it's full of weirdos, duh!

Joking aside...reinstalling the drivers for your router won't fix the problem. That has nothing to do with the speed and capability of the router.

You would need to update it's firmware. You will have to access the router's setup page, download the firmware file, and update it through there. However, that may or may not fix the problem because that may not even be the cause of the problem.

In order to eliminate the problem, you have to figure out what's causing it and address it.

The thing with WiFi is, any little thing can cause interference which can cause your signal strength to degrade. Anything from a microwave, 2.4Ghz phone, baby monitor, large solid object in the path, bad configuration on WiFi settings (using a channel that everyone in your neighborhood also uses is a good way to lower signal strength and increase interference), etc.

Try switching to a different channel, a less used one. If you have your phone on you, take a look at all the other wireless networks that the phone can detect and see which channels they are on. Pick a channel for your router that none of them use or the least used one.

Eliminate any other causes of interference, such as the phone, microwave, etc and change the location of the router. Routers are built normally with an omnidirectional antenna which spreads the signal in a large radius. Putting a router on the floor next to a wall would be bad placement.

Depending on the hardware in your Android, it might be 802.11b/g/n...n has the highest throughput but requires that the router is also 802.11n AND no other type of device connected to the network. If you connect b or g devices to the network, the wireless router switches to mix-mode to enable those devices to work and your n speed just dropped. If you have that type of network set up, think about switching to all n or just turn off those b/g devices.

Why is my WiFi all of a sudden going in and out ?

terry h

I have AT&T and the internet usually works fine . But out of nowhere , the WiFi started going in and out . I use WiFi on my HP Labtop , Wii , Kindle Fire and Android Phone . It started acting up out of nowhere . It connects on my WiFi for a hour then disconnects and it doesn't connect to my Wii Kindle or Phone at all .. I dont know what to do . Internet works fine on my Moms PC Desktop , its just the WiFi .. A AT&T Tech told me to change my WiFi channel to 11 and it still isn't working . I have a PACE router .. WHAT TO DO TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ?! HELP MEEE !!!!!!!!

Answer
The problem with WiFi is contention - too many devices all contending for the same bandwidth. Sharing that bandwidth are cordless phones, blue tooth devices, microwaves, baby monitors and much more.

My guess is that either your router is failing or there is a new device in the area which is causing a great deal of interference with the 2.4 ghz band.

If you purchase a new router, be sure to get one which supports 802.11ac in addition to 802.11 (a)/b/g/n.
AC is the new standard, otherwise known as gigabit WiFi. Be sure to do the same for any adapters you purchase down the road as well. In the meantime, if your devices support dual-band N, then switching to the 5 gHz band would probably help. There are far fewer devices using the 5 gHz band which is what the ac standard uses as well. The range isn't as good but it is much faster and more reliable.

Best Baby Monitor?

@>*~Be@ut!

I am researching monitors. I am looking for one with a camera, but I know some of them work better than others. Any suggestions on which one gives the best picture? Which one has less static? I've heard so many different reviews. I found one that I really like....

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2943603&fromRegistryNumber=44067222&product_skn=760504

But the price is a bit high. I am also looking for 1 that has the option to add a 2nd camera. I have a 3 year old daughter also, and it would be nice to be able to watch her too.

Answer
We own this camera and overall LOVE it. We really like the fact that the screen is large. We tend to get a clear picture although sometimes there is some flickering. We remedy this by just moving it a little bit. It does not pose much of a nuisance for us. We can also move it around the house and not worry about it sucking up a ton of batteries (this was a major issue with our previous monitor - it just gobbled up batteries). We have never gotten images of other people. No issue there.

Warning though: It does not have the best audio. The lowest setting is somewhat loud for my tastes. However, we did not care about the audio as we can hear our baby cry just fine. Also, there are also only two channels with this monitor so you don't have a lot of room to search for a better connection.

If you want great audio to go with the screen, I would recommend looking into some monitors with small screens. The only downside to those is the battery issue.

On a final note, I would absolutely recommend investing in a video monitor. We used to have a regular audio monitor but kept rushing in every time we heard the baby cry. Unfortunately, many times she was just yelling in her sleep and we were the ones waking her up. The video monitor allows us to see if she is really awake or just in transition sleep. Lately, she has been rolling over in her sleep and it allows me to keep track of her. Great purchase!

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

Hope this helps.

Baby things for baby shower?

Pookie

My friend asked if I had a registry and to send her a list of things we needed for bubs, and also a list of things we DEFINITELY dont need (for example I have 2 baby monitors and clothes to put her through college)

HELP lol here are some things Ive thought of
Gift certificates to walamrt
Baby towels
Bugger Sniffer
Digital Baby Thermometer

can anyone else me think of things that I should put on the list, was thinking of adding things of all price ranges so everyone could afford to get baby something (when I say this I dont expect gifts, but I also dont want to put pricey things and leave people no options to get bubs something)

We have literally everything from crib, car seat, stroller, stroller cdoesn't bassinet, breast pump (which doesnt make a great gift lol anyway), blankets, change table, stuffys, monitor, baby bath ( we pretty much have everything) Im looking for the "OH YA" stuff we might have forgotten?

Answer
It doesn't hurt to ask for diapers, but don't be afraid to put some spendy stuff on there. Most of the time the people with get you a few things if you ask for the smaller gifts lol

Also, how about baby shampoo and stuff? They have great gift baskets at places like walmart.

Does anyone have a baby monitor they'd recommend?

Raven

I had one made by Safety First that we got at Wal-Mart and it quit working. We have no clue why. It was cheap in more ways then one. I'm looking for a new monitor that's not expensive, preferably under $30. Does anyone have a baby monitor they really like and would recommend? We need something that will last more then 2 months because we cannot afford to keep replacing them.
I don't mind paying a bit more if it's a good one. Fisher Price was what we had before but bugs got into it while it was packed up so it quit. The local Wal-Mart stopped carrying Fisher Price monitors :(
I absolutely cannot afford $130 for a baby monitor!! That's absurd!

Answer
This is the one I have and love it and it's not really expensive,I have had it for 3 yrs and had no problems with it.They have a newer model of it at walmart.I like the lights and sounds ones.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2002&e=product&pid=35269

here is the newer model:

Should we get a Warm mist humidifer or a Cool mist humidifier for our infant?

Hello

Which one is better for our baby?

Answer
I wouldnt suggest one ... the CDC has long discouraged the use of them. My hospital discontinued the use of them in the mid 90's ....

If you feel you need to use one ... my caution is ... these devices are very prone to harboring water borne bacteria ... that can potentially cause pneumonia .. so follow the instructions below to protect your child.

Preventing Humidifier Problems

Clean your humidifier daily: Clean dialy to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi and scale. Be sure to completely empty it and wipe all surfaces dry before you refill it. For Console humidifiers, follow the manufacturer's instructions for changing water in them. Be sure you unplug the humidifier from the electrical socket before emptying it and refilling it.

Use distilled water: The health impact of humidifiers depends a lot on the quality of water used in it. About 90 percent of compounds dissolved in water, including lead, aluminum, and asbestos, may be spewed by ultrasonic humidifiers as small particles that may result in chronic (long-term) respiratory problems. To prevent that, use distilled water in your humidifier to reduce the mineral content in the mist because distillation is the best way of removing minerals from water. Do not use tap water because it has a high mineral content?especially if you have well water. Even though distilled water may still contain some mineral content, it will probably have fewer minerals than tap water. It is important to know that not all bottled water has had the mineral taken out of it. For example, spring water, artesian water, and mineral water still contain these minerals that can lead to scale build-up and white dust.

Use demineralization cartridges or filters: Use filters if they are supplied or recommended for use with your humidifier. Be sure to change them regularly during heating season when you are using your humidifier more. Since it is not known how effective these cartridges or filters are in removing minerals, keep an eye out for white dust that would show that the minerals are not being removed. If your water has a high mineral content, it might be cheaper to use distilled water than to use these filters.

Drain, clean, and thoroughly dry your humidifier before you store it. Store it in a dry location. Before you use it again, be sure to clean it and wipe off any dust.

Clean your room humidifier well and often during the heating season, usually every third day. Follow the manufacturer's suggested cleaning methods. Some manufacturers recommend using diluted household bleach for cleaning and maintenance, usually a solution of ½ cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Be sure to rinse the humidifier well several times to remove all traces of the bleach. If you don't, you might accidentally end up breathing in some of the chemical.

Use a brush or other scrubber to clean the tank. Be careful not to damage the motor or to scratch the inner surface. Clean or replace sponge filters or belts when needed.

If there are no specific recommendations on how to clean your unit, clean all surfaces with a three percent solution of hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to rinse the tank out thoroughly before using.

For central humidifiers mounted on the furnace, be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for cleaning and maintenance. Be sure not to allow water to stand in the tank for long periods and keep that water clean.

Keep steam vaporizer humidifiers out of the reach of children since the steam and boiling water may cause burns.

Buy a hygrometer to monitor interior humidity levels. Use only the amount of moisture you need. Some humidifiers contain a built-in humidistat that may be adjusted to the proper moisture level. If water condenses on windows, walls, or pictures, you should relocate the humidifier, lower its humidistat setting, or reduce its use.

Do not let the area around the humidifier get damp or wet. If dampness occurs, turn the humidifier down so not as much mist is coming out. If this cannot be done, then just use the humidifier every so often. In addition, you do not want things like carpeting, drapes, or tablecloths, to become damp since that could lead to mold growth.

If you start having any health problems that you or your doctor think might be caused by your humidifier, quit using it, even if you have been following directions in cleaning it.

Hope this helps .... I had three girls and survived without them ....

Is this an appropriate tank for a baby red eared slider?

ily747

I got my turtle around 3 weeks ago. I know that I need to increase the tank size as he gets older. As the weather increases i have an outside habitat that he can spend some days in supervised. ( he is too small to be left alone because of predators )

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii104/thinkpink13205/Flash2.jpg

Any things that I need or anything that i am using that may be harming the turtle please inform me! Thank you!

P.S I am using white paper so that he does not see the rest of my desk and get scared. Where he basks i have pictures of grass so he feels secure.

Answer
Looks like you put in a lot of work -nice, the paper is a good idea if he's skittish, over time most sliders acclimate to people quite well, The one in my son's room - 6 yrs old now - actually seems to 'watch' the computer screen - lol.

The water may 'seem' right because the little turtle is so very, well little - but in reality he needs as much swim space as he can get - at the very very least the water should be at least two times the width of the turtle in depth to allow him to right himself if he flips over. The gravel you can likely get away with for now, as he gets larger you'll need to monitor his eating of it and lookout for imapaction. Filtration should be stronger/better - even if you cannot afford to go larger he really needs more effective filtration - internal filters just don't do a good enough job with turtles.

How old was your child when you stopped using a baby monitor?

Jenn

My oldest is 25 months (just turned 2) and I still have one in her room. She's my alarm clock. When she wakes up, I get up lol. I wouldn't hear her without the monitor.

Answer
We still have monitors in my kids' rooms with the receivers down in our family room. My son is 3, and my girls (who share a room) are 6 and 7. I know that we don't really need them anymore, but it's hard to hear the kids when we're downstairs. (Our bedroom is just down the hall from their bedrooms, so I don't use a monitor from my room.)

Honestly, I use the monitors mostly during the day so that I can hear if they start to argue and need me to run interference. ;-) It's also nice at night when the kids go to bed and we're still up so that we can hear if they need anything without them having to scream for us. We've talked about getting rid of them before, but the kids kinda use them as (one-way) intercoms now, so we've just left them.

What are the best baby brands for...?

Lady Stran

Stroller
Bottle
Car Seat
Formula
Diapers
And anything else you can contribute on from experience

Answer
maclaren, graco quattro tour deluxe travel system
playtex ventaire advanced; older baby...drop ins
britax
enfamil lipil/ AR for babies with reflux..we have used both
pampers swaddlers, everything else leaked

here's my book.....

well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the e

First time parents...baby monitor recommendations?....?

dy_66

Answer
we have this one and LOVE it!! there is ZERO interferance, it plays lullabye's, tells you the temp in baby's room, and it has a "lightshow". It has something like 60 channels too so you dont pick up anyone else's house. Also it is VERY lightweight ans easy to cart around, even outside!!

I highly reccomend it!!!!!!

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2918362

EDIT: I forgot the best part....it only "kicks in" when there is noise, otherwise it is silent so there is no "white noise/static" from it all night!!!

And it has a walkie talkie feature that my hubby loves....he is constantly talking through it when I'm in there with our son... "daddy to lucas, daddy to lucas, come in.."

Baby Monitors: recommendations?

Q. Ok, we have the Graco ivibe monitors or whatever they're called, but they crapped out after one year and make this strange crackling noise so we need new baby monitors. I need one that doesn't get too much interference or much of a humming noise if its plugged into an power strip with other appliances. What Mhz's are the best (i know nothing about that) and what has worked well for you? I need help! I tried to different Safety 1st monitors and gotten no where with them..

oh btw my son is going to be a year old on the 29th, so the angel ones that monitor the hearbeat too are out of the question....i did always wanna try those ones though!

Answer
I love my monitor. It's a Mobi 2.4 GHz Wireless Color Monitor and it works awesome! It has 3 channels so if one has interference you can change it to another. I am sitting here right now watching my daughter sleep (it has night vision too); the monitor is just a foot away from the computer and there is no interference at all. It's very sensitive too. I can even hear her breathing sometimes! I don't know how the ratings are for them since I didn't do any research - it was a gift - but I would give it a 10 out of 10. It's so great to be able to see my daughter all safe in her crib sleeping instead of just hear noises from her room. Sometimes I just sit here and watch her sleep or as she's falling asleep. It's the sweetest thing!

***EDIT*** Oh! One more thing... It can be plugged in or work off batteries so I can carry it around with me if I need to; and the range is really good. I know they are pricy. I think it was close to $200, but it's something I can use for a very long time. You can even hook it up to your tv and record whatever is viewed through it (like a video camera). I have even used it for surveillance once when I was worried about an ex who still had a key to my door (long story) and I wasn't able to get the lock changed right away. I just set it up so I could watch the entrance-way and it really put my mind at ease. I'll probably use it down the road to record events. You can even view your baby sleeping on your big tv when it's hooked up. I just love this thing!

baby heart monitors?

Bella

i am so excited. my hubby is on his way to go pick up a fetal baby heart monitor. Does anyone have any experiences with these devices? do you end up listening to the baby all day? is one brand better than the other? any recommendations?
oh bummer, nothing very positive about those things....did anyone have anything positive to say :(

Answer
I had one for my second pregnancy. I bought the most expensive one I could find and I only used it once. The room has to be super quiet cuz the monitor will pick up everything and when the baby moves the sound is distorted, you can also hear the sounds your stomach makes but its super hard to hear the baby's heartbeat. I hope it works better for you.

for anyone who's tried the heart monitor's to hear the baby?

l.clark79

how far along do you have to be before you can hear the baby's heart beat .a friend just give me hers and she lost the instructions.Any advice?I am almost 6 wks along.I know i have to be 12 wks before the dr.'s monitor can detect it with their monitor is it the same with this one or do i have to wait longer?

Answer
i bought one of those cheap $20 heart monitors and it is hard to find the heartbeat with those...first of all, they are not made to hear the heartbeat so clearly, the only way to do that is to get one like the OB doctor has...i used to take my stethoscope, which was one of the $200 ones and supposed to be the best, and i could never find his heartbeat...also, its hard to find the heartbeat....those monitors you buy at walmart are good just to hear the baby move and hickup...i used to sit there and call my dad and put the headphones to the phone to let him hear him hickup all the time...

as far as being 12 weeks along for the doctor to hear the heartbeat, i dont think thats right...i had my first check up at 7 weeks and my sons heartbeat was clear as day and they found it right away

Answer
Harp seals resemble harbor seals in body and head form, but are larger: adult Harp Seals grow to 1.7 m long and can weigh over 130 kg. The baby Harp seals are all white, which helps them blend in with the snow. Adults are grey or white with black markings on their back and on their head. Polar Bears, sharks, Orcas, and in some areas Walruses are natural predators of Harp Seals. Inuits living in the region hunt them mainly for sport and to a lesser extent, commercial reasons. They are often given different names according to their age :
âWhitecoatsâ : Birth
âRagged Jacketsâ : 2-4 weeks
âBeatersâ : 4 weeks to 1 year
âBedlamersâ : 1 to 4 years
âSpotted Harpâ : 4 to 7 years
âDark Harpâ : mature/adult

arp Seal separates into three populations according to their breeding locations: the White Sea, the West Ice and Northwest Atlantic. Seals breeding in the Northwest Atlantic near Newfoundland, Canada represent the largest population and are genetically different from seals breeding in the two other places, which have not been proven genetically different from each other. All three populations are hunted commercially, mainly by Canada, Norway, Russia and Greenland

There are no reliable estimates of the size of Northwest Atlantic population when commercial hunting began in the early 1800s.Several simulation models estimated virginal populations to be in the 3 to 4 million range. It is considered that the population recovered to about 3 million at the end of World War II, but subsequently declined by 50â66% between 1950 and 1970 due to commercial hunting in Canada. Quotas and other conservation measures since then have enabled the population to nearly triple in size to 5.2 million according to a peer-reviewed survey in 1999.

ature females usually give birth to one pup in March/April each year. The pups are born within well defined areas in the drift ice in the White Sea or in the area between Jan Mayen and East Greenland (the West Ice population). The Harp Seal is migrating searching for food over large areas in the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea, the Greenland Sea and the Denmark Strait. Age of maturation is 4â8 years, normal life length more than 30 years. An adult animal is about 1.9 m long with a weight around 200 kg.
The population size was in 2000 estimated to more than 300,000 animals in the White Sea and 361,000 animals in the West Ice.
The annual prey consumption was in 2000 estimated to about 3.5 million tonnes in the White Sea area (Nilssen et al 2000).

n Canada, the season for the commercial hunt of harp seal is from November 15 to May 15. The majority of sealing, however, occurs in late March in The Gulf of St. Lawrence, and during the first or second week of April off Newfoundland, in an area known as "The Front". This peak spring period is generally what is referred to as the "Canadian Seal Hunt". In 2006, the St. Lawrence seal hunt officially started on March 25. This date was initially uncertain, due to thin ice conditions caused by the year's milder temperatures.
In 2003, the three-year harp seal quota granted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans was increased to a maximum of 975,000 animals, with a maximum of 350,000 animals in any two consecutive years. In 2006, 325,000 harp seals, as well as 10,000 hooded seals and 10,400 grey seals will be killed. An additional 10,000 animals are allocated for hunting by Aboriginal peoples.
The Canadian seal hunt is monitored by the Canadian government. However, although approximately 70% of Canadian seals killed are killed on "The Front", the vast majority of private monitors focus on the St. Lawrence hunt, due to its more convenient location.
The 2006 St. Lawrence leg of the hunt was officially closed on April 3, 2006. Sealers had exceeded the quota by 1,000 animals by the time the hunt was closed.
While the Inuit hunt seals for food, tools, energy, clothes, and art, the commercial hunters only hunt for hides, often leaving the body intact. The only part the Inuit do not use is the bladder, which they float to sea as part of custom.

Harp Seals eat a wide variety of fish and other sea creatures, and their diet seems to vary during different stages of life. Since reporting of the stomach contents of killed seals began in 1941, at least 67 species of fish and 70 species of invertebrates have been found to be part of the Harp Seal's diet. After the Canadian cod collapse many French fishermen and politicians blamed Harp Seals for the destruction and hindering the recovery of the North-West Atlantic Cod population. Although cod is a major contribution to Harp Seals diets, most of the cod is Arctic Cod and not the commercial Atlantic. The ratio is about 36:10 although the total tonnage of cod is around 200,000 tonnes. Although the effect of record population levels of harp seals on the recovery of the Atlantic cod stocks has been disputed, the accumulated evidence is such that most scientists now accept that cod populations are now in a seal predator trap. It is widely accepted that harp seals did not cause the collapse. However, a strong case can be made that both harp and hooded seals contributed to that collapse, as did other factors such as environmental change and marine community shifts. The issue with most regarding the cod stocks is that if the hunting were to stop, the population would grow and therefore cause total prey consumption to increase. Even with heavy hunting, from 1990 to 1999 there was a 800,000-tonne (32%) increase in fish consumption by seals. If the hunt were to stop, the belief is that the population would skyrocket and within a few years more than likely double the consumption rate. The Harp Seal is at the top of its food chain and has few natural predators to keep its population at bay. For more information, review Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals Stock Status Report 2000 from the Canadian Government.

Each year, mature females (5-6 years old) give birth to a single pup, typically in late February. Pups weigh approximately 10 kg and are 80â85 cm long. Immediately after giving birth, the mother smells her offspring, and from that point on will only ever feed her own pup, whose scent she remembers. Harp Seal milk contains up to 50% fat, so pups gain over 2 kg per day when nursing, which lasts roughly 12 days. During this time the mother does not eat, and will lose up to 3 kg per day of body weight. Weaning is abrupt; the mother simply leaves and never comes back. The stranded pup will cry at first, and then become very sedentary to conserve body fat.
Pups are unable to swim or find food until they are about 25 days old, leaving them very vulnerable to Polar Bears and humans during this time. Due in part to the period of helplessness as infants, and to the long time it takes them to become proficient swimmers, as many as 30% of pups fail to survive their first year. Also, although it is not legal to catch seals using nets, thousands of seals are inadvertently killed in commercial fishing nets every year.
As mother Harp Seals wean their young, mature males (6â7 years old) roam around breeding with the females promiscuously. Courtship begins on the ice; however the actual mating takes place in the water. Harp Seals have delayed implantation, meaning the fertilized egg becomes an embryo, but does not implant in the uterus right away. The embryo will float around for about three and a half months before implanting and beginning to grow. This allows all the females to give birth within a very small time window each year, when the ice pack is available for giving birth and raising their young.

Baby registry out of control...totally not affordable, what do I do?

MissyV

For my baby shower, my sister in law got us a small package of Wal-Mart brand diapers that did not even cost five bucks. She said that they were saving for a house. I thought okay, they are broke, not a biggie a gift is a gift. Fast forward to now, she is having twins at the end of next month and her shower is in two weeks. Her mother e mailed the family with a list of what she needs. I checked the prices on the items⦠This list had nothing for under $100! Car seats that were one fifty each., a double pack and play for two hundred. A double stroller for two fifty. Baby monitor that was one fifty. A breast pump for three hundred. I was like WHAT? I would never have the nerve! So I am thinking that this is just what the mother sent out and she has no clue what peoples budgets are for showers. So I go online to look at her registry, that she registered for herself. THE SAME. Not one single thing on her registry was under $75.
Not that I am cheap, but câmon. How do you ask people for your second baby shower to spend this kind of money and not give the option to buy less expensive , more affordable things. I just find this totally rude. My other sister in law is like, she is just on drugs if she thinks that we can afford to buy these expensive things for twins, it would be at least two hundred dollars for everyone attending!
So do I just ignore her and buy what I want within my budgetâ¦it is $75for each child. So $150 all together, witch I think is more than generous considering her gift to me. Or do I let her in on the fact that everyone is saying how her requests are just not affordable and let her know she needs to register for more affordable things.
I just cannot believe that she expects people to purchase these things. I knew my parents would buy a gift that was on the more expensive side, but friends and so on. An outfit or a package of bottles and I was happy. We are not in beverly hills and most of our friends are struggling like the rest of the country. I guess it is just embarrassing to me because we have a bunch of mututal friends. Should I tell her to check herself?

Answer
When I was pregnant, I registered at Target and Baby's R Us. I personally wouldn't get much at Baby's R Us because of the prices, but some people don't mind spending the money. They feel that the quality is better if you spend more. On the registry welcome page, I put a note that said that the things on the list were ideas of things that I would like. I didn't mind if they bought the actual item, or if they got something similar for cheaper.

Don't bring up the fact that you think she's asking too much; that would only cause problems. "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger," Proverbs 15:1. It's true, trust me!

If it were me, I would pick out a few items on the list that seemed different or unusual. The stroller, car seat, breast pump, are things that more than one person will likely get. Thus, she will have to exchange them. Pick out a few odd things, such as if she listed an outfit, look at the design, and find something similar at a cheaper store, or even a garage sale (Some of my favorite gifts I gave people I got from Thrift Stores or garage sales). Bibs are pretty useful. A pack of size 1 or 2 diapers would actually be a good idea, or even a big box of wipes from Sam's Club or Costco. They usually go for about $20, and there's 200 something wipes, if not more. They last!!

I hope everything works out. Don't allow tension to get to you; it's won't make anything better. Good luck with your shopping! Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do the right thing!

when Should i take my baby to the hospital of a fever?

ashley

Right now my baby has a temperature of 99.2 and i was wondering when should i take her

Answer
99.2 is NOT a fever.

How old is your baby. For a baby under 3 months, you'd want to call the doctor if her temperature goes over 100.9. (Or if she seems significantly ill.)

If baby is over 3 months, fever is a less important symptom, and it's more important to look at your baby. If she's happy and eating and wetting plenty of diapers, there's no need to call the doctor unless the fever is over 103. If she's lethargic or vomiting or screaming in pain ... you call the doctor.

And the HOSPITAL is for emergencies. Given that it's presumably the middle of the morning where you are, you would call the doctor, NOT take up the valuable time of the ER doctors examining a baby who is almost certainly NOT dangerously ill.

EDIT: And don't give fever reducers. You want to able to monitor her symtpoms, and you can't do that if you're masking them with tylenol.

Would I actually need a baby monitor?

orangeflam

I'm buying things a little along for my baby who will be comming into the world in mid-August. The baby's bedroom is just accross the hall from our bedroom and I wonder if there is any need for a monitor. Did those of you who purchased them really use them? If you didn't purchase one did you wish you had?

Answer
Never purchased one. Was GIVEN one, and used it every now and then. Mostly when I'd be showering while baby slept, or when I needed to relax outside in my backyard. The monitor let me know when she would awaken.

Do I really need a baby monitor even if my baby will be in a room down the hall while I'm sleeping?

Lindze

My husband and I are fighting nonstop about a baby monitor, there are several couples on our street who have babies and who will around the time we will have ours. I feel we need to spend more on a monitor so we don't pick up other babies crying on ours, and he doesn't want to spend any extra money. Can any parents tell me will I wake up if I don't have a monitor close by? Help!

Answer
I don't use a monitor at night for my 4 month old, she has been in her own room since 1 month and I hear her just fine when she wakes up. We also have a fan on in our room as well as a sound machine in hers. My husband does not wake up when she cries but I do, I think it is just a mother's instinct, we are so in tune with our little ones! I do reccomend a monitor for when you need to be doing something outside and won't hear him/her or for peace of mind when you have company or are watching tv and might not here cries over every day noise.

Does a Tardis Baby have a birthday?

Fangfan33

If a baby is born in the Tardis, on Doctor Who, When is it's birthday? Such saying, does River Song(Aka Melody Pond) Actually have a birthday?

Answer
I would assume they have an Earth Calender or the Tardis Monitors 'Earth Time" to remind them of how long they've been traveling as I thought The Doctor makes a point to drop them off a matching time after departure.. lest They noticably age over what would be a weekend to friends and coworkers on Earth if they're away a year or more

ie.. If they Leave on February 10th 2013 and are traveling for 7 days the Doctor would try to return them on Feb 17th 2013... thus despite visiting Planet X in the year Eleventy Jillion and 4 on day 2 when Baby is born... their B Day would be Feb 12, 2013

How much does it cost the first year to raise a baby and other questions.?

Katie-Lynn

I am not pregnant. This is a protect for school.

What is the annual cost the first year to raise a baby?

Second question. Im going to give you a list of newborn items. Tell me which items are TRULY NECESSARY.

Crib
diaper changing table
rocking chair
baby monitor
baby bathtub
bottles
bottle brush
bottle drying rack
baby swing
pacifiers
infant bouncer
swaddling blanket
play mat
play pen
carseat

Answer
Crib
Carseat
Bottles
Swaddling blanket
Play mat (can be used on floor as changing mat too)
These are the basic basic needs for me. You can get by without the others but not these.

The annual costs for a baby each year is different for every person. Some woman breast feed which is cheaper than formula. Others use cloth diapers which are cheaper than disposable etc.
I bought a pack of 15 reusable pea pod diapers for $70. These can be used from newborn right up to 3 years, so I only bought 1 pack of disposable diapers during the first year, to see what was better. Diapers are about $10 (new Zealand dollars) a pack. Babies go through about 5-10 nappies each day in the first few weeks, and then about 3-5 a day from around 4 months to a year. So do the math and it'll give you an approximate answer (get the price of diapers from your local supermarket).
If breast fed, it cost nothing. I breast fed, but I also bought a breast pump and baby bottles for $150 in case baby needed to be left with another person etc. if formula feeding, do some research online on the average formula used a month, and then times that by 12 (12 months in a year) get a price from your local supermarket.
Clothes- this depends on where you buy from etc, but I spent about $800 on all clothes up to 12 months. (including shoes, socks, togs, pyjamas etc)
I spent about $20 or so on baby shampoo, soap and powder every 6 or so weeks, so that's about $180 a year.
I bought baby towels and facecloths before my baby was born and they lasted right up until she was four. I spent $30 on 5 towels and a couple packs of facecloths.
Bibs- got given some at baby shower, but bought a few packs for $20 around about, these lasted the whole time needed.
Bassinet/Moses basket - needed for first 8 weeks, cost me $80
Crib- needed up until about 2- cost me $250
Stroller- needed up until about 3- cost me $150
Car seat- Bought a seat that was used from birth til 4 years. Cost $150
Blankets, sheets, duvets for crib- got given some at baby shower but probably costs about $100 for a couple pairs of sheets, blankets etc
Swaddling blankets- needed for first few weeks (I used them but not necessary) depending on brand etc but I got a few muslin wraps for $30.
Baby bath- optional, but I used one. $30
Medication such as baby Tylenol, gripe water, teething gel, teething powder etc about $50 all up the first year (depends)
Baby food- baby cereals, rusks, custards and other tinned foods probably about $90 a month (depends how much food baby eats. This price is based on my baby who at 7 months ate 2 tins a day, at $1.50 each) I also bought veggies and meat, and puréed these myself for baby. (this price will depend, as some babies don't start real food until a year old) my girl at 10-12 months was eating the same foods as I was.
Some people will put their children into childcare, this is another cost.
Where I live, medical attention for under 5's is free, but many people will have to pay for this as well.
Hope I haven't forgotten anything :)
Hope I helped!

NEW ZEALAND DESTRUCTION!!! Global warming, Volcanoes.?

lloydchris

Quick question for all you Kiwi's out there. My fiancee' and I are planning on moving out there in 4 years and something came to my attention. With all this talk on global warming, scientists have shown that if half of antartica and half of greenland melt, the sea level will rise 20ft. I'm curious to know what the sea level of new Zealand is and where I could find a map of it. I want to know how that will effect your beautiful country. Next question..
I'm from the U.S. and I'm well aware of Super Volcanoes. I passively watched a documentary on one such volcano in New Zealand a while back and was curious to know its validity as well. Which valcano is it? When is it due to erupt? Thank you.

Answer
We cannot predict when a volcano will erupt. however Volcanoes are easier to monitor than earthquakes. There are several different methods, but all of them are based on some geological reality. We think we understand some of the processes that go on before a volcano erupts. The problem is that eruptions begin from below, in regions within the crust, often far from the surface. The trick is to find out what those processes do at the surface before the eruption actually begins, and then to look for those surface effects.
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Vhp/C1073/scientists.html this site will show you how volcanoes are monitored. Unfortunately we are unable to really tell when or how the volcano will erupt and the severity of the eruption. It is almost like saying you will have a baby boy in three years.

Also there are a few super volcanoes in the world and there is almost no telling when they may erupt, all we can really do is respect them, keep a safe distance and hope for the best. I hope I helped you.

Baby registry must haves?

New Mom

I'm finishing up my baby registry. As a first time mom-to-be, I'm not sure if I have everything or not. I have the basics but what are some often overlooked must haves or essentials? Thanks for your answers!

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Baby #1 on the way? Name and what to get?

Sporty Bab
