How much is too much for a baby monitor?

mizzms

I bought a baby monitor off of ebay yesterday for $14 that retails at $75. My husband had a fit because he wants a video baby monitor...infact..the one he wants is just shy of $200....Don't you think this is too much for a baby monitor? Most people will only use it once..maybe twice..
need i also say..that our baby is never out of our sight really? He sleeps in our room..we have him sleep in a cradle downstairs until we go to bed...we only got one just in case we ever need to use it..

Answer
I don't think the video monitor is necessary. i wouldn't spend more than 40 bucks on my monitor. I hardly used it and I ahve two kids. Its almost like people buying that sterilization thing for baby bottles....????? Whats wrong with a pot of boiling water? Works just as well and its a heck of a lot easier on the wallet

has anybody got a fertility monitor?

i am really needing a fertility monitor (free or cheap as possible) to track my ovulation with my PCOS i am having real bad issues with my pcos and have been going to a private hospital for 2 years now and this is what i now have to track, please can anyone help?
many thanks
sorry should have said i am monitoring my temp and it peaked but nothing happend thats why my doc has recommended a fertility monitor, i have to have blood tests as well x

Answer
You can check on ebay or amazon and get the monitor and the test strips cheaper than you would in a store. Also maybe try your local craigslist? There are many other ways to track your ovulation besides the monitor. You can chart your basal body temp, look on fertilityfriend.com for more info on charting. Charting will confirm ovulation for you, so you will be made aware of it after it happened. You can also try ovulation predictor kits. They are available at just about any store, and they will also help you to become familiar with your ovulation pattern. I would highly recommend the monitor, as I've been using it for a year and it is spot on. I trust it fully.

Lots of luck and baby dust :)

Building a Computer...Can you help me!?!?

EB1285

Ok so i am currently running a Pentium 4 dell factory 8300 desktop computer.
http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000968,10004197,00.htm I updated the graphics card last year to a very nice ATI card, and i also added another 512 stick of Ram. Everything is fine on it, but i just want more speed/power/reliability. So i am wanting to build myself a new computer and purchase the parts off of new egg. My question is what all do I need to buy, and what can i steal from my old comp?

I figure the new Core Duo processor is a must. (2.0 GHZ)
I also am going to get a new tower. (This will come with a power supply).
I will steal my old graphics/video card as well as mouse, keyboard, speakers, and monitors.
Do I need to buy a CD-Rom, CD-RW, CD-DVD or can i steal these too?
Motherboard? If so how much memory usage do i need for serious gaming?
Sound card, can i steal this from the Dell?
Ram, I currently have a gig of ram in the other comp, can i steal these too?

Answer
ok well first. the core duo is nice but it will not work on your current mobo. the core duo is a lga type (which has not pins)
so you will need a new mobo. next yes you can use your optical drives(dvd cd)
you will probably need to use different memeory as well. most mobos use ddr2 which is much faster. i would go with at least 2gigs of this.
next get a seriousl graphics card with at least 256 and either agp2 or a pci express. i recomend either stealth with a radeon chipset or a realy nice nividia card.

also not to knock new egg but you might want to try global first they tend to have a little better slection on cases and on prices they are alot lower than most places.

one last thing when you get your new mobo, tower and stuff make sure you get at least 2 case fans. one push back and one pull in front to keep this monster cool. eithr that or do what i did and put yourself togethr a system with these parts.

intell core duo extreme
3 gig of ddr2
2tb hardrive(sata)
stealth graphics card with radeon 9800 running 512mb pci express
volcano temp and tach case fans
water cooler
850 watt power supply
asus motherboard (ifogot the number)
a 37" lcd screen
wireless mouse and kb
linksys 2.4 ghz wireless dsl setup

this baby kicks a>>
good luck dude
let me know how it goes ok. and hey dont burn down the house doin it like i almost did with my first build 10 years ago.lol

I have a dvi to video connector that views the opposite way which shows the video from my computer to the tv but i need it the other way around this time.

This should take care of you:

It comes with the ability to capture video to your Mac as well, but you can also use it just for casual viewing.

ladies please help me get some rest with my 6th month old baby boy?

ambernjera

he got his shots but hes never ran a fever with any of them and then when he got his 6 month shots he started running a fever, i gave him tylenol 2 hours ago he doesnt feel warm to me and i dont wanna check his temp. bc hes asleep, i cant get any rest im scared his fever will go up while im asleep help please
he doesnt feel like he has a fever and it was only 99.6 last time i checked it before he went to sleep

Answer
Well if you gave him tylenol 2 hours ago, you can't give him another dose for another 2 hours anyway. Go to bed and set an alarm of some sort for 2-3 hours and check on him then. If he feels really warm, wake him up and give him another dose. It is really rare for a baby to have a super high fever because of his shots. They usually run a low grade temp like you've described. I don't think his temp is going to spike to a dangerous level . If he does get super sick during the night he will most likely cry and wake you up (I assume you have a baby monitor). He really just needs to get some sleep and let his body fight off the vaccine so they he builds up his immunity to those diseases like he is supposed to. He may even sleep longer than he usually does because that is what his body needs right now.

My son just got his 12 month shots yesterday and has had a low grade temp off and on all day today. He has been miserable and doesn't want to eat or drink, but it's helpful to remember that this will pass and he will be feeling better in a day or two. I made him mac & cheese (his favorite) and gave him juice even though he doesn't get it very often at our house just so he would have something on his stomach. I'm just going to let him sleep it off. It really isn't anything to worry about. Getting sick from the vaccine is so much milder than getting sick with any of those diseases. He'll be just fine. Get some rest. Good Luck!

We have this one above and loved it. You can't put a cell phone next to it or does that buzzing thing, but it picks up the babies noises down to breathing softly.
I liked that I could turn the monitor off, and the sound down and the lights would flash if she was making some noise..then I could either turn the monitor on or the sound and decide if I needed to go in there.

Even with the buzzing once in a while it was great.

How many of you mommies have bought any of the monitors on the links below?? Do they work good?? Not too many false alarms?? Would you recommend those ones or another brand??

Answer
i have 2 of them....i LOVE love love them. our master bedroom is upstairs, the kids room downstairs, and my husband works midnights. that monitor is that only thing that ever gives me piece of mind for sleep at night esp since i have horrible hearing.
they make a bunch of diffffernt kinds...digital ones, ones with room temp on it, ones with extra long sensor pads. i prefer the extra long sensor pads, and never get false alarms.

this was worth every penny, esp if you plan to have more kids...and the resell on them is great.

i highly recommend them. try it out, if you don't like it it than save the receipt and return it.

the radio frequency of a baby monitor can be picked up on a programable police scanner, a friend said he didn't think so, but before i get one for my new grandchild i would like to know if people can listen in?

Answer
YES! Baby monitors CAN BE MONITORED IF you get one of the more inexpensive versions.

Get one that states on the package:

1) Spread Spectrum
2) Scrambled or Encrypted
3) Digitial

Any combo of this like Digitial Spread Spectrum would be best.

Baby monitors operate in one of two bands 46-49MHz and 902-928MHZ. Most of the inexpensive ones are nothing more than a radio transmitter with a receiver that any one can tune in and monitor.

Newer and more expensive models use the 902-928MHz band and use technology like more modern cordless phones like spread spectrum where the transmitter changes frequencies very quickly over a set period.

Fisher Price etc. all make versions that are not easily monitored over the more cheaper models. Read the package if you don't see "spread spectrum" "digital", "scrambled" or "encrypted" on the package DONT purchase it.

Microwave ruining wifi connection?

Gezo

Whenever someone in my house uses the microwave, all wifi signal is lost to everyone's computers, ipods, whatever uses internet. Is there someway to fix this? I tried changing router channels, but I dont think I did it right =P
How exactly would I go around doing what GTB said..?

Answer
Microwave ovens, baby monitors, cordless phones, and similar devices use the 2.5 GHz frequencies also used by the 802.11 b / g / n wireless LAN devices.

Sometimes you can change a channel within the 2.5 GHz range and get around the problem.

If this fails, convert to the 802.11 a band which runs at 5.0 GHz. This assumes your router and your pc wireless network interface are able to use the 802.11 a.

baby monitor?

vettech132

this may sound a little creepy but im just wondering of it ever happened to anyone else. I was just in the room with my baby and turned off the base for her monitor so i wouldnt wake my husband but the reciever was still on in the bedroom. I was bringing her into the room with me and i could hear a baby crying over the monitor. could it have picked up another baby from someone elses house? this really freaked me out, especially since my baby wasnt crying.

Answer
Very normal. That is why I always turn mine off when we don't need it. I don't want any nosy neighbors listening in to our lives. ESPECIALLY since the baby is still in our room :-)

One time I picked up my neighbor's phone conversation on my monitor while she was on her cordless phone. That was really weird. I couldn't shut it off right away because I was nursing. I did get up right away though and turn it off when she started talking about private stuff - I didn't want to be nosy neighbor :-)

So, don't freak out, just choose a different channel and shut it off when you aren't using it.

Laptop Help Please!!!?

matt W

I'm about to buy a Sony Vaio laptop, which costs £499. The specification is as follows:

- Intel Core Duo T2310 Processor

-15.4" Widescreen

- Double layer DVD/ - RW drive

- 2048MB / 2GB hard drive memory

- Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

- Wireless LAN 802.11 a/b/g

- Vista

Is this a good offer? I'm afraid that the processor might be weak but I can't distinguish a good one from a bad one since they're all given names like T3287642JFi etc. Thank You.
No way, the T2310 has the smallest processing power within the Pentium core-duo family :( Is there really a big difference between 1.46 and 1.60?
Here is the model:

http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=420158&tab=specification

Answer
well a laptop at 15.1 inch monitor would not be a good candidate for playing smashing video RPG's so I guess you would use this for document work. The Intel made video graphics card works just fine for your apps.

If you are a gamer you would probably have a bigger screen or connect this baby laptop to another monitor, which I would guess a serious gamer does not really do.

So back to your question...

The processor is an old one, maybe you want a Core 2 Duo, not the Core Duo. In any case the Core DUO would be cheaper but would run hotter and slower than Core 2 Duo. How slow, well maybe not noticeable per your application, if you would use it for documents work anyways and emailing and some internet. The pipe bottleneck would be more on your internet connection.

For Sony they concentrate on user experience and business road warriors, their laptops are generally light and has good power. Though I prefer Toshiba... but that's just me. Or now the pearl white iBook. Apple is also using Intel processors.

cheers

Best VIDEO baby monitor?

momma_2_an

I'd like to buy a video baby monitor! Last night was the first night I put my 5 1/2 month old in her own room! I have a regular baby monitor but I just could not sleep! I need the comfort of seeing her! I don't want a "cheap" one but I don't need the most expensive one they have either! I want one that WORKS good!!!!! I've read mixed reviews on so many of them!

When you answer, please tell me why you like that certain one! And if you know of one to stay away from, let me know that too!

Thanks!
I am not "crazy"! My 5 yr old stayed in our room (in her own bed) until she was 3 1/2 because the house we were living in at the time had mold in her room. Then Hurricane Rita hit and we lost our house, so where we were staying, we all had to share a room! I think that's why I am having "issues" with allowing my new baby to sleep in her own room!

Answer
i have a video monitor and i got it as i gift but i think the maker is SUMMER

they also make color ones ( A LITTLE more expensive)
and portable color ones (the most expensive one)

i like mine it works good and you can see him if it is dark in the room or not

the only hard part abou tthem is getting them in the right postion to see the baby

whats a good wallet friendly baby monitor camera and sound that can be viewed from phone threw wifi?

ryan

I want to be able to view threw phone and still have a monitor at home with little or no monthly fees to view online is there such a system?

Answer
You can check Foscam ip/network cameras. It works over wifi (wireless) or with cable to your internet connection router. It costs around 80 dollars I think... Some models have 2 way voice, too... With night vision and everything... You can even change the camera direction remotely from your phone or computer... It's not easy to setup initially (the user manual was horrible when I bought it 6 months ago), but once it's done - no problems... I have 2 of them at home.

Baby monitor for ipad?

N

I am looking for a baby monitor camera to use on my ipad. The one I have now uses a monitor screen but my house is too big and it is now out of range. I want a monitor to use with wifi so I can see my baby on my ipad. I would like one with the same features as my current one. One that pans, and I can talk back to the baby when shes crying. I've found one so far, (Motorola Blink1 Wi-Fi Video Camera for Remote Viewing with iPhone and Android Smartphones and Tablets ) but looking for other options and personal feedback. Thanks!

What is the best SIDS baby monitor?

Answer
I use Angel Care Monitor; you can buy the motion sensor one, when no movement is detected (and that includes breathing) for 20 seconds, the monitor will beep. I like it except the fact the one I have comes with sound sensor too, and it catches random neighbors. I would recommend you get just the motion sensor monitor with no sound sensor, and if you want sound, buy sound monitor separately that has at least 4 channels.(otherwise you might end up like us, hearing some random neighbor's baby crying at 3 in the morning......not fun)

Angelcare monitor _ False alarm?

mommyD

Hi! I am a first time (paraniod) mom>
My baby is 5 months old, we have been using the angelcare monitor with the motion sensor from birth. The last two nights the alarm went off a twice (for not picking up movement), this has NEVER happened before, i got such a fright i jumped up and screemed his name on the way to his cot. When i got there he was breathing. Now im not sure if my baby actually stopped breathing or was it a false alarm? Should i take him to the doc? has anyone else experienced this?

he sleeps on his back arms out to the sides

Answer
I have been through 3 Angel monitors for false alarms. It is SO important that the baby is DIRECTLY on top of the pad or else it can go off. Also, the sensitivity level can be turned up and down depending. Mine just beeped this morning twice because my little man scooches himself to the very top of his crib by morning. It's even scarier for us because our baby WILL NOT sleep on his back to having a serious moro reflex that wakes him unless his arms are bound beneath him. I went two months without virtually ANY sleep before I gave into sleeping him on his tummy with the Angel Monitor and a video monitor while sleeping on the floor in his room. In the directional booklet it says that false alarms are common. Mine have gone off over ten times and every times, he's breathing normally and I really don't think he stopped breathing. I feel for you though-- it is THE WORST feeling in the world.

Asian Water Monitor?

Q. I Have A Baby Asian Water Monitor, How Fast Do They Grow, This Is Not My First Monitor And DEFFINETLY Not my first Reptile.... i have a breeding pair of ball pythons and red tailed boa and 3 baby ball pythons, and an iguana. They get along quite well with the 2 dogs and cats lol. How Fast Do Asian Water Monitors grow, THANKS in advance....

Answer
Common Name:
Asian Water Monitor

Scientific Name:
Varanus salvator

Homeland:
Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India

Size:
Up to 7 feet long and 130 lbs

Lifespan:
25 years old

Cage: Oh My! Make it a full room. Monitors are smart and curious guys so give 'em lots of room to climb, dig and bask. A hide box is a must. Especially if you have a substrate they cannot dig in. This is so important to their digestion and mental well being so please be sure to supply them all their needs. Don't forget access to plenty of sunlight. My Bambi flattens out like a pancake when the sun rays hit her cage. Soooo cute. She loves the sun. Now at 2 feet long this is easy. A full size room with a floor that can be disinfected and a pool that she can swim in will be a lot harder to achieve this. Do it or do not get the pet.

Substrate: Fresh clean dirt is great. Its cheap to replace. My little "Bambi" likes to dig and has a habit of pooping in her water so cleaning is easy for now but will be tough when she is a 7 foot adult. I sometimes change her water twice a day now. This will be a major problem when she full-grown. I still use the dry deck I speak of in my general section. Her new enclosure will be a 12x12-room custom built and I would like to be able to supply her with the dirt she'll need for her natural burrowing needs. I'll deal with that as she gets bigger.

Behavior: Curious, unpredictable & potentially dangerous as an adult if frequent handling is not there. Two 10 minute sets a day seems to keep my girl tame. Remember, any animal with a mouth can bite and the bigger the animal the bigger the bite.

Temperature:: Hot, humid, tropical. 79 on one side and up to 90 in the basking spot. Make sure your little dinosaur has freedom to move about and go to the spot where the temperature is what he wants. Don't forget the water. I use under tank heaters to warm the water and create humidity for them and of course my heat panels to heat the cage. Please visit www.pro-products.com for more info on these awesome radiant heat panels. Tell them SnakeBabe sent you.

Feeding: These guys are scavengers so feeding dead food is easy. Mine still loves those crickets, though she doesn't get as much as she did when she was a hatchling. Now she mostly gets pinkies/rodents of appropriate size sprinkled with vitamin powder. The powder doesn't seem to phase her in the least as it does some of my lizards. Also, she loves cat food, but only a few times a month and only low fat.

Lighting: Same as my other lizards. Sunlight and full spectrum light is a super must do! As often as possible your lizards should have access to direct, unfiltered sunlight. Have a cage, NOT a glass aquarium but an open-air cage on your patio, in your yard or by an open window. Put your lizard in there and let him soak up the rays. He will feel better, bite less and get those bright eyes and beautiful colors you want. Please keep in mind if it is too hot you could cook the little guy so make sure temps do not exceed their limits. Possibly place them in a tree shadow so the light is there but not too intense. This will provide UV radiation necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D and allow the reptile body to absorb calcium. In the winter this can be a problem. How can you put your sunlight needing reptile out in the yard when the cold will kill him? Answer is full spectrum lighting. I prefer natural sunlight, but is the next best thing. A florescent light tube (never the screw in kind) that copies a little bit of the sun. I have been using Vita-lite brand as far as I can remember with great success, but I believe they have sold to GE and I'm not sure if the bulbs are the same. I'm still looking into it. Another problem is that there are now a zillion lights on the market claiming to have full spectrum capabilities. As my time allows I will put more information on this subject later. There is much available on the Internet now if you search.

This and That: These animals get big big BIG! They will live to 25 years old. That's a long-term commitment to care. Lots of space must be given to keep these animals happy and healthy. Monitor lizards can inflict a painful bite. It is important that they become used to your daily contact wile they are young so that they can be handled safely when they are adults

SnakeBabe's Pet Rating: Poor

Very high maintenance. Due to size and speed and nature to possibly strike unexpectedly. Get a Bearded Dragon.

Household Radiation Bad?

icecream13

Is radiation from household items such as tv's or computers bad for you? If so, what can happen? Please leave sources.

Answer
There is a great website at the Health Physics Society which has many questions answered by qualified personnel regarding radiation. You can get information regarding cell phone, television, computers, microwaves etc here:

http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/

For example:

"QUESTION: What are some items in a common household that over time may cause radiation poisoning (for example, microwaves, T.V.s, monitors)? Is there a hazard or is it so small that we should not be concerned with it?

Thanks.

ANSWER: There are a number of common items found in a typical household, or owned or possessed by a member of the public, that contain small amounts of radioactive material. These include, for example, (1) topaz gemstones that have been irradiated in a reactor to improve their appearance, (2) timepieces containing tritium, (3) smoke detectors containing 241Am, (4) glass lenses in eyeglasses or sunglasses containing uranium and thorium, (5) thorium mantles used in gas lanterns, (6) magnetrons containing thorium used in microwave ovens, (7) electric lamps containing thorium in the filament, and (8) television faceplates and automotive glass containing thorium. Other consumer products were used in the past but are no longer marketed extensively. These include, for example, (1) electron tubes containing various radionuclides, (2) dental products containing uranium, (3) germicidal lamps and sunlamps containing thorium, and (4) glazed ceramic tableware and glassware containing uranium."

http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q410.html

OR:

"QUESTION: We have a Toshiba 61-inch TV that we just bought. I was wondering how much radiation, if there is any, we can get from thisâespecially since we have a seven-month-old baby. My baby and I are in the living room (a small one) most of the time, with the TV always on. Also, how should we protect ourselves from radiation from microwave ovens? Thank you.
ANSWER: In 1968 Congress passed the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act which gives the federal government the authority to have mandatory safety performance standards for electronic products. The Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health is charged with this responsibility.

In answer to your specific question, both televison receivers (Code of Federal Regulations, Section 1020.10 Television Receivers) and microwave ovens (Section 1030.10 Microwave Ovens) have mandatory standards which limit the amount of radiation emitted by these products. These standards have been in existence for almost 30 years, and the safety record of these products is evident. These products are safe, and you need not be concerned about any radiation emitted from them.

For the technically inclined, the television standard specifies a limit of "0.5 milliRoentgen per hour at a distance of five (5) centimeters from any point on the external surface of the receiver." For microwave ovens the limit is "1 milliwatt per square centimeter at any point 5 centimeters or more from the external surface of the oven."

The reader should also understand that the electronic products are not radioactive materials; if the product is not on, radiation is not emitted. With microwave ovens, along with other electronic products which emit electromagentic radiation, FDA's main concern in recent years has been the potential for electromagnetic interference with implanted medical devices. Patients with these types of devices are usually informed regarding such potential interference.

Although there is concern regarding such interference, scientific studies continue to support the general safety of these products.

Transition to toddler bed?

Proud Momm

When moved your child from the crib to toddler bed did you

1.) Open his/her bedroom door after you went to bed so he/she could come get you if needed?

2.) Keep the door closed through the night and use a monitor?

This is an on-going debate with my in-laws and I'm just wondering what others do.
I suppose I should add some extra details...

He already sleeps with his door closed to keep the cat out. While he wouldn't hurt my son I don't want him walking all over him waking him up all night. So he is used to sleeping with the door closed already.

We live in a split plan house, so this means his room is way over the other side of the house (this is why I would have a monitor). I have no intention of leaving his door open so he is free to wander about (I agree with Janet on!). While my house is completely baby safe, he is a very curious little boy. Also don't want him stopping to bang on the piano at 2AM!

Kammy B I agree, my child, my choice! I've just seen them give my brother-in-law so much grief over it I know what's to come!

I was really just curious to see how others handle this and if I was really a horrible mommy for wanting to "lock my child up" (as it's been so subtly put!). Clearly I'm not nuts!!! ~ Thanks for confirming that!!!

Answer
Keep the door closed with the baby monitor in the room! I have five children, and I have learned from my mistakes. NEVER let the toddler wonder around! If the toddler becomes afraid, then they will know how to use the door to get out! I have three grown children in their twenties, and twins who are nine, I know the routine.

At what age...? Baby safety questions - Help!?

Do you quit letting your child use the pacifier?

Do you switch to a toddler bed?
From a toddler bed to a traditional bed?

Do you allow your child a pillow?

Do you quit covering outlets?

Do you quit using baby monitors when they are asleep?

Do you quit using baby gates around stairs?

I'm curious as to what your family has done - or what the experts say.
Thanks!
Do you quit letting your child use the pacifier?
My oldest quit at 18 months - but he was an easy child (and I was pregnant w/brother and didn't want any confusion over what was a baby item and what wasn't) - My youngest is 2 and still has it at nap/night, but never any other time. I'd like to break him of it, but it is hard (both boys sleep in the same room - space issue)

Do you switch to a toddler bed?
Oldest @ 2.5 so baby brother could have the crib. Youngest, at around 20 months - was ready...

From a toddler bed to a traditional bed?
When we have the finances/space...

Do you allow your child a pillow?
When they start to sleep in a toddler bed!

Do you quit covering outlets?
We still have ours covered. Our oldest is 4, and still attempts to mess with them occasionally...

Do you quit using baby monitors when they are asleep?
We still use them - hubby is dependent...

Do you quit using baby gates around stairs?
We still use it (ages 4 & 2)...
Thanks to everybody who answered. I wanted to get peoples opinions on when some of these safety measures aren't needed anymore.

I do strongly agree that the BIGGEST factors in determining whether a particular safety feature is needed or not is family situations and child's personalities. Because there is no right/wrong answer on this - I am going to have a tough time picking best!

Once again, thank you :-)

Answer
Pacifier ends at age 1 for my daughter-Its a pet peeve of mine seeing toddlers running around with pacis.

My Crib's safety suggestions suggest switching from the Crib to the Toddler bed at 15 months. Then at 50 lbs it suggests switching it to the regular bed.

A baby under the age of 1 for sure does not need a pillow-I would say when switching the Crib to a Toddler bed, then add a pillow.

Baby monitors aren't really needed unless you are planning on being on the opposite side of the house a lot.

my home wireless connection is very poor. what can i get to give it boost?

Answer
There are several things you can do; To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/change-your-wi-fi-router-channel-to-optimize-your-wireless-signal/

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mYXJwcm9jLndpZmkuYW5hbHl6ZXIiXQ..

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wireless-Router-Technology/dp/B005OPO63S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1323867281&sr=8-2
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Why is it slow to use net . Is there any problem who can tell me?

You don't really give very much information to help us help you, do you? Nothing about your hardware or your network configuration/method of accessing the internet. Nothing about the speed your ISP says you should get or what speed you are getting.

What if my son doesn't get along well with the twins?

I_Love_ma_

I've heard that some kids don't get along well with new siblings( especially 2). Jaylin is 2 years old and VERY spoiled! He loves all my attention! What would I do if he doesn't like the twins?

Answer
I can't really tell if the twins are around yet for him to be annoyed by.

Every child that age who have no siblings are like that. I promise. I have two children who are two years apart, and for months I worried Cameron would resent baby Colin.

It was a non-issue.

You can try a few of these ideas, though:

You don't mention how often your son is around other children. That can make a difference, since even though he has the attention at home, does he have to share it at daycare or something? Also, are there any other kids in the family, or is he the only one?

If he's the only baby around, then it's possible he has the attention not because he demands it, but by default, since there's no one there to share it. It could be he'll not have a lot of trouble sharing some of the limelight.

1. Keep them involved. Let him know babies are in Momma's tummy. Show him the sonogram pictures. If the doctor allows it, take him to a doctor visit to let him hear the baby's heartbeat, or let him in the room before labor turns ugly and let him listen then and/or watch the monitors. Let him know that it's a little boy or girl like him and what the babys' names will be. You can even let him pick out a present for the baby. My son picked out a stuffed cookie monster for the baby, and every night he put the plush in the crib with Colin.) If you do all this, it'll be a little less of a shock when there are these little red bundles of crying taking up all of Momma's time.

2. Sell him on the cool parts of being a big brother. A big one that worked well for us was that big brothers get to eat real food (and cookies and drink chocolate milk or juice in bob the builder sippy cups) while babies only get white milk in baby bottles (we even let him have a taste of the baby's milk, and he decided on his own that apple juice and cookies are a better snack). Big brothers also got to go to bed a little later at night and wear Spiderman pajamas and look at books.

3. Two years old is young, but there are things he can do to help, and that can really help him feel needed in the family. He's lost his spot as the one to be adored, so helping him carve out a place in the group will help him. At two, he can sit on the couch and, with close supervision, "hold" the baby. He can give the baby a bottle, give a pacifier, sing a lullaby, make faces. Cameron loved burping the baby, too, but that needs to be done very very carefully so they don't hit the baby's back too hard. I think he liked the instant reward of actually getting a burp out of the baby. :-) He can help pick out clothes for the baby to wear, or which blanket he can be wrapped in. At that age, they like to have some control even over little things. Letting him make those simple decisions can help him feel he hasn't lost control all over the place. Two-year-olds are great for entertaining the baby during spongebaths or diaper changes (change diapers on the floor using a mat, and he can sit across from you and entertain the baby by singing, talking, making faces, showing off a stuffed animal, etc.) Of course, it goes without saying that EXTREME supervision should be practiced. A big advantage is that kids from about 1-1/2 years old to about 3-years-old or older are fascinated by babies, and they love to love on them. Encourage it!

4. Don't cast him aside. There are, of course, times when he will have to not be in the middle of things. When you are at the hospital having the baby, let him know what's going on, but have something really fun planned for him. My older child went to stay with Grandma and Grandpa, who always have bananas. They had pizza for dinner. :-) Depending on the hospital and their policies, if he's allowed to come up there, and if there is a tv and vcr, get him a new video to bring up to the hospital after the baby is born. We put a brand new Blues Clues video in, and that way, Cameron was able to be with us and near the baby without having to focus on too much for him to handle.

5. I know this sounds wierd, but of the children, early on, the one most in need of being held, given attention, etc. is the older child. I'm not saying ignore the newborns, but if they're sleeping, they can be put down to bed and older brother can have that time with Momma and Daddy. Basically, early on, all the newborn will do is sleep, eat and poo (sometimes all at once). They won't need that much expressive attention, and can't handle that much without going into sensory overload. But if you consider how big a change this is, the older child, at just two years old, will not be prepared to lose his cuddle time, and he shouldn't have to. He didn't choose to have the baby. Even if he has to share time and attention, which he does, there are ways to help with it. For example, when the baby is being nursed or bottle-fed, big brother can sit up with Momma and baby and listen to a story, or watch Sesame Street, or sing songs, or just talk. Multi-tasking is one of the main things moms have to learn to do. :-) Doing that could also provide some wonderful time to not only bond with the new babies, but to allow the siblings to bond, and to bond as an entire family.

6. Don't blame the baby for things the two-year-old has lost. If he wants ot have a story, or whatever, and the mother doesn't have the energy, saying "Momma's sleepy" is easier to accept without placing blame than "The baby kept Momma up all night."

These things, as well as special little suprises (something my kids love is that I pick up "birthday" paper plates with their favorite characters, so they think it's cool when they get to have a Batman or Mickey Mouse plate or whatever) and just lots of love and acceptance, I think your son will be fine. My kids are best buds now, and they argue, but I'm glad we had them so close together.

Hope some of this helped. Congratulations to you and your family!

Multiple Babies?

TwinMommy

I know that taking fertility meds, such as Clomid, makes you release multiple eggs. I'm just curious, how many people who have taken Clomid and become pregnant have had twins or more?

I would love to have twin babies!

Answer
The risk for twins with clomid is small and the risk for high order multiples (3 or more) with clomid is even smaller. Clomid is designed to help make ovualtin stronger or happen in the first place and many times still only one egg will reach maturity and release, though there are times when two eggs will become mature and release. This can be observed through vaginal ultrasounds around the time of ovulation.

A higher risk of multiples is linked to the use of injectable meds such as Follistim and Gonal-F. It is very common to produce a large number of eggs with these meds and in my last cycle (was an IVF cycle) I produced 18 mature eggs. Injectable cycles are closely monitored with vaginal ultraounds and estrogen blood levels every few days

Baby monitors are necessary?

Mccoy

Not long ago at a friend's house see the baby monitor, feeling pretty good, everybody thinks that baby monitor is necessary? Where to buy some affordable baby monitor ?

Answer
A baby monitor is not necessary. It is convenient, but not necessary.

We have an average size home and I could always hear my babies even without the use of a baby monitor, even though we had one. I would sometimes go outside and the baby monitor would not work properly, when it would have been most convenient, because I was too far away.

Then again, my little ones never slept away from me either- they roomed with me.

I found the monitors most convenient when they were OLDER as I could monitor what was going on and stop arguments before they progressed.

What is a baby monitor and how it works?

Amina L

I have an elderly client with this baby monitor. Is it possible to move it just like any other electronic by unplugging it and plugging it in another room? So that if I move from room to room I can still monitor that person. I do not want to mess with it by taking it off without knowing anything about it.
I would like to plug it in another room where I can turn on light and read, not to disturb the client and still hear hear her via the monitor.

Answer
A baby monitor can be 1 way , 2 way, an now they even have one with a camera attached. It usually has a base that you keep with the baby and a hand held you can walk around with. The 2 way allows you to hear the baby and speak back if you want. They work really well and its a great way to keep track of babies and small children while in another room or doing house work.
I have used these many times working in healthcare having elderly patients.

How do I choose the best frequency for my cordless phone?

ANG

What is the difference between the frequencies?

Answer
the best a safest you can get right now is the DECT6.0....

http://www.101phones.com/browse/18b145148f9d8fa63849b02bfc08698e/DECT_6.0_phones/?link=leftmenu

What's the difference between 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz phones?

Your average cordless phone is actually a radio transmitter/receiver that operates across various radio frequencies. The three currently used frequencies are 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. As you step up in frequency, you'll experience an increase in the signal clarity and the range your phone can reach from its base station. However, the actual range and sound quality of your phone can be affected by obstructions within your home and interference from other electronic devices. Here are some general guidelines for choosing one of the three frequencies:
900 MHz

Most manufacturers have begun to phase out 900 MHz phones with AT&T having phased them out completely. Phones operating on this frequency are fine for household use and reasonably priced, though the features offered with these phones are limited.
2.4 GHz

The majority of phones on the market today operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency. This higher frequency provides better performance and sound quality than 900 MHz models. With more models to choose from, you'll also find more available features, including integrated speakerphones and support for multiple handsets. One thing to keep in mind is that other electronic gadgets, from baby monitors to wireless networking gear, increasingly use the 2.4 GHz band and may cause interference. If you use these items in your home, consider purchasing a 5.8 GHz phone.
5.8 GHz

5.8 GHz phones offer the latest in cordless telephone technology with the best clarity, range and possibly security. The biggest advantage to a 5.8 GHz phone is that its frequency band is less trafficked than the 2.4 GHz band, resulting in less interference. The chips that generate the 5.8 GHz signal are more expensive to manufacture, so expect to pay a bit more.
Analog versus digital

You can find both analog and digital models within all three of the main frequencies (900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz).
Analog

Analog technology applies to a system of recording or transmitting sound. In an analog system, the changing energy in the sound is converted to energy variations in another medium, for example, magnetism in a tape.

Analog cordless phones are the most affordable and available option. You will experience adequate range and good voice quality. Drawbacks include poor security (anyone with a radio scanner will be able to listen in) and static when you move too far away from the base station.
Digital

Digital technology is also system of recording or transmitting sound. In digital systems, the changing energy in the sound is continually measured.

Long range cordless home phone?

firemandan

I used to have a 900mhz phone that had a range of several hundred feet. Now that it has dies though I have not been able to find another system that works any where near as well as my old one. I have tried two systems that work on 5.8ghz from Uniden and Pansonic but both have horrible range. I am considering tiring the new DECT 1.9ghz phones but i am not sure that will work any better for me. Whatever I get needs to be able to be purchased and possibly returned locally in the Charolote North Carolina area.
In particular any recommendations for specific phones?

Answer
In general, you can expect better clarity as you move from 46-49 MHz models (which are overcrowded with baby monitors and walkie-talkies) to 900 MHz models (which most homes use for cordless phones) to 2.4 GHz models. The primary benefit of 5.8 GHz models is the avoidance of interference with 802.11b wLANs and microwaves. If interference is your primary concern, make sure you purchase a fully 5.8 GHz phone.2 Otherwise, a dual transmission phone will give you better battery life.

As for range, here are some average maximum distances for the different technologies. Keep in mind that these numbers are very subjective and depend on factors such as obstructions, frequency interference, transmission technology, and even weather. The higher figure listed assumes ideal conditions are present.

46-49 MHz - 40 to 250 feet
900 MHz - 75 to 400 feet
900 MHz w/spread spectrum - 200 to 1500 feet
2.4 GHz w/spread spectrum - 300 to 2000 feet
5.8 GHz w/spread spectrum - 300 to 2000 feet

In addition to their other advantages, the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands are above the range that most scanners can intercept, making it much more difficult for eavesdroppers to listen to your conversations.

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

Hope this helps.

Any suggestions on a great baby video monitor?

How old it "too old" for a baby monitor?

Loren

Our daughter will be 3 in August and I am 29 weeks pregnant with our second daughter. I still have the baby monitor in our daughter's room and as I am preparing for baby, I am thinking about getting another baby monitor to put in the baby's room. I just do not think 3 is old enough of be "monitor less". I even joke with my husband that our girls will have baby monitors until they are 16. At what age did you take the baby monitor out of your child's room?
I did not know I was a "creepy" parent because I have a baby monitor in my child's room. Maybe if your next door neighbor's 3 year old son died at nap time because he was not actually taking a nap, you would be hesitant too.

Answer
I think once the child thinks it's weird to have it in there then that's when u should take it out, but before then i don't think any age is too old.

I know kids who are 7/1/2 and 5 and they still have monitors in there rooms and they both are still fine with it and it makes both of them as well as there parents feel safer, and so i don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I still have a video monitor in my 22 month old son's room and plan to keep it in there til he doesn't want it in there anymore (hopefully til he is at least 5 or so)

Hope this helps and good luck, :D

EDIT: Avodah - Sorry but having a monitor in an child's bedroom is not creepy, esp. a child that is only 3 years old, and i think it's only wrong if the child complains about it, which most kids don't care til they are much older than 3, like 7, 8 or older. To me it makes it safer, esp.if ur bedroom and ur child's bedroom are far apart and/or u are a heavy sleeper. Maybe it's not right for u or ur kids but it's not creepy either.

I'm trying to catch a CHEATING BOYFRIEND, I need your help!?

.

I'm trying to catch a cheating boyfriend...

So, my question is: What are some POPULAR and REAL dating/socail websites a 20-something guy would use? (To hookup with/check out girls) BESIDES- Craigslist, Facebook, and MySpace. PLEASE HELP!

10 POINTS BEST ANSWER

*LADIES, I know some of you have been here in the same situation. Help me out! Share stories too!
*GUYS, name what you got and ideas would help please!

Thanks!

Answer
if you have no proof of him cheating, or just a little tiny feelings inside of you that makes you feel that way---just rebel against that idea. Don't look for something that mightn't exist. Maybe he isn't cheating..

here's some idea that came to my mind, and some i learnt in school
check his phone bill
hack into his email or ask him for his pw
go on myspace and do searches on his name and other emails, which i suggest you already did
you can go over to his house one day unexpectedly
follow him around if you got a car

One of the oldest tricks in the book is to go out of town, but never leave. Tell him that you are visiting family on business or some other story that is believable. Before you leave the house make sure that you place a baby monitor, recording device or some other listening device in the home, especially around the bedroom. You can rent a car, borrow friends and sit down the street from the home to see who comes and goes from your home. With an inside listening device you will also be able to hear what is going on in your house while you are gone. Be sure to go incognito to not get caught, invest in a ball cap, sunglasses and maybe even a wig!

Realize that if it's gotten to the point that you seriously suspect he's cheating, your relationship is already on thin ice.
Remember that honesty is the best policy. Talk about it. Don't try and catch him secretly. Just ask him up front. If he won't tell you the truth, then even catching him red-handed won't save your relationship. Ask him to explain his whereabouts or whatever else is troubling you. Don't take a simple yes or no answer.
Remind him that you've entrusted him with your heart, and how much he means to you. Tell him how proud you are of him and your relationship - how strong and honest it is. If he gets uneasy or quiet, he might be hiding something, and the guilt will eventually push him to the edge.
Tell him that you would never keep secrets from him, and mean it. Share with him a secret that you've kept from him; it might encourage him to admit any secrets he may be keeping, and will deepen your relationship.
If you're serious about catching him and you're willing to breach his privacy, consider the following:
Spy software or monitoring programs may catch him in the act and get real evidence.
For Mac OS X users: Install Perfect Keylogger for Mac
For PC Windows users: Install Power Spy for Home
Get the password to his myspace or facebook account. If he's cheating on you he's probably talking to the other girl on myspace without you knowing about it.
Check his mobile phone for text messages from other girls.
Listen to what he says. If he begins to point out the negative aspects of your relationship, that could be a sign that he is becoming or has already become unfaithful. Watch for comments like "Something is missing".
Observe his actions. If he seems nervous for no reason or on edge, the odds are that he has done something he shouldn't have. He also may seem disconnected from you, or less fun to be around.
Listen to what other people say. If he cheated on you, the odds are that someone knows. Gossip can be a very untrustworthy source - don't base your next move on this alone.
If you're really this insecure about your boyfriend and you can't trust him, perhaps consider that you aren't ready for a relationship. If he loves you and you love him, you can work through any difficulties and there's no need for spying or hacking into his myspace/facebook/aim/msn, etc.

good luck.. and i hope he isn't cheating

How can I hook up my PC to a wireless 3G network?

Dogs rule

My area supposedly has excellent 3G coverage but I bought a Sierra Mercury USB device and could not get it to transfer at more than 14 kbps. The indicator found the 3G network but the signal was only 1-2 bars. Yet 1/4 mile down the road on Dad's PC it transferred extremely fast. Needless to say I returned it. Is the problem the device? Reception? The satellite service I have is only 256 service and even it transfers up to 70 kbps at times so I know it's not my computer.

Answer
Wow there are a number of reasons for this issue, and without having the actual laptop and device in front of me, and at the location in question, I can only be general in my answer.

I assume you have AT&T as this is the USB device that Sierra Wireless is making for them with the new name of Mercury. You may want to check your providers website for the zip code you are in, and how many transmitters/receivers there are for your type of 3G connection.

The most likely cause of the 3G problems is between the antenna and an amplifier that captures very weak signals from the antenna. This could lead to poor 3G connectivity and slower data speeds as witnessed by the weak signal of only 1 or 2 bars. The amp can only amplify so much before too much data is lost.

The Mercury is compatible with Windows7 Mobile Broadband, Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS X 10.4 or later. A Firmware update may help, just go to the www.sierrawireless.com website for the update for the Sierra Wireless Compass 885 as that is the model the Mercury is.

Make sure that any software that came with the device is configured for optimum performance based on the data plan you have with your provider. Also be aware there may be fine print in your contract limiting your speed, data usage, or when you try to connect on other providers networks. Also make sure the Laptop you are using is optimally configured for wireless connections and networking settings are tweaked.

The computer case itself can be a significant barrier to the Wi-Fi signal - try positioning the case so it doesn't come between the the device the possible direction of any antennas. Also there my be environmental impacting issues. RFI (Electromagnetic interference or EMI, also called Radio Frequency Interference) can be caused by any number of things such as High Power Lines, Broadcast transmitters, two-way radio transmitters, paging transmitters, and cable TV are potential sources of RFI and EMI. Other possible sources of interference include a wide variety of devices, such as doorbell transformers, toaster ovens, electric blankets, ultrasonic pest control devices, electric bug zappers, heating pads, and touch controlled lamps. Multiple CRT computer monitors or televisions sitting too close to one another can sometimes cause a "shimmy" effect in each other, due to the electromagnetic nature of their picture tubes, especially when one of their de-gaussing coils is activated.

Electromagnetic interference at 2.4 GHz can be caused by 802.11b and 802.11g wireless devices, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors and cordless telephones, video senders, and microwave ovens.

3G uses HARQ(Hybrid automatic repeat-request) a incremental redundancy, where user data is transmitted multiple times using different codings. When a corrupted packet is received, the user device saves it and later combines it with the retransmissions, to recover the error-free packet as efficiently as possible. Even if the retransmitted packets are corrupted, their combination can yield an error-free packet. The weaker a signal the more opportunities there are for packet corruption. More packets re-sent slows down speed.
