i need comcast modem help?

Titan4

i am going to be switching to xfinity internet from clear internet. I do not want to pay $7 a month a a modem but i can not decide which modem to get. Comcast only allows you to use certain modems http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net ..... I want a modem that will give me WiFi throughout my home. It needs to have a decent signal range too because i have a larger house. Any recomendations?? anything is helpful

Answer
A cable modem does not provide routing functions or WiFi.

Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone modems which can be connected to a stand alone router.

This gives you two choices,

You can buy a combo gateway from the list, such as this one: Motorola SBG6580 Gateway (Combo Modem/Router) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007GZ2QKO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007GZ2QKO&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

Or you can buy a compatible cable modem from the list and add any wireless router that you wish. (compatibility only refers to the modem)

I prefer the second option, because it gives you many more choices as far as the WiFi router goes.

I have personally had good luck with the Motorola Surfboard line of cable modems. The newest standard is DOCSIS 3.0. From the list I would likely choose the Motorola 6121 http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/device.php?tier=-1&devid=292&e=0&d2=0&d3=0&s=&so=&sc=1091

I have Cox Cable 50 Mbps Internet and use a DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola SB6120. It is just a older model of the SB6121. Here is a review I wrote a few years ago when I bought it. http://isp1.us/reviews/motorola-sb6120-surfboard/

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

If you are interested I use a dual band Netgear router. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-rangemax-wndr3700/

As far as range goes,

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. 2.4 GHz WiFi connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

Depending on the size of your house and the factors listed above, you may need one or more wireless access points or wireless range extenders to cover all areas adequately.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Good Luck...

do i need a router or a modem?

Msp

wireless or wired? i'm confused! ok-right now, i have wireless internet,
from comcast. the modem or router thing, i rent from them at $7 bucks,
is in my living room, and my pc is in my room, hooked up to my hdtv.
how, ever-i'm tired of paying comcast the extra $7 dollars a month!
so, i'm thinking about buying the "Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS modem".

i want to have a WIRED internet connection, and be able to share
that "wired connection" to my old '2006' pc, apple tv, wireless printer,
and an iphone 5. BTW..the pc will be DEAD soon, until, i can afford
another one! so, i'll only have the apple tv, printer and iphone, to connect.

do i need a wireless or wired modem, or wireless/wired router?
i appreciate your help. thanks.

Answer
Here is how it works,

A router connects two separate networks and manage the traffic between them.

A wireless router enables you to provide wireless (WiFi) Internet access to all of your WiFi enabled devices such as laptops, game consoles, cell phones and tablets, Streaming devices such as Roku boxes and Internet enabled TV and sound devices, etc.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

DSL and Cable modems use different technology, for this reason you can't use a cable gateway (DOCSIS) with DSL or use a DSL gateway (ADSL2+) with a cable Internet connection.

A highly rated DOCSIS 3.0 cable gateway is the Motorola SBG6580. It is currently about $120 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040IUI46/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0040IUI46

You could also buy a standalone cable modem and connect it to a separate wireless router.

If you buy an older DOCSIS 2.0 model and you are paying for a speed tier over 20 Mbps. then you will probably not see the throughput that you should.

Be sure to get a newer compatible DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem such as the Motorola SB6120. It supports bonded channels and will increase your cable Internet performance.

As far as routers go,

A fast wireless router does not make your Internet faster.

Your WAN speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second).

For example if you pay for a 10 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 10 Mbps.

No router or modem will change your 10 Mbps Internet speed.

This Internet connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router.

If you have a 10 Mbps plan and one user is utilizing 5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a HD Netflix movie that only leaves 5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

Fast routers and network devices are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP.

WIRELESS RANGE:

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range.

Many wireless connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

You don't have to buy your modem, router or gateway from your ISP, you can get one from a local retailer such as BestBuy or Fry's or online from places like Amazon.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 20 or more reviews with at least a 4 star rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Most cable Internet providers use the cable modem's MAC address to activate the modem.

Every device that has a network interface has a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address. This is usually expressed in hexadecimal such as 10:25:A4:59:EF:1C

You'll have to call your cable provider with the MAC of the new modem so they can activate it on your account. The MAC address is usually printed on a sticker attached to the modem.

Good Luck...

Has anyone seen then summer infant peek plus baby monitor?

I just had my mom buy it for me because I am about two months away. It is so cool and I cant believe more people aren't buy them. I set it up and my husband wont stop messing around with the app on his iphone lol

Answer
Hi summer monitor rubbish lol I had mine 3 day suddenly touch screen stop working

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

what type of camera is a spy camera?

iman a

im looking for a camera that you can put in one room and in another room you can see whats going on the place you put the camera in, actuallly i need it because my sister shes disabled eats all the food in the kitchen and i stay in the bedroom and cant watch her. her and my dad stay in the living room and my dad never watches her going into the kitchen. she eats all the meat cooked. i couldn't buy a lock for the refrigerator because i dont want to deal with opening it all the time it should be easy access. so what type of camera can do that like spying in another room

do you guys know any iphone or ipod apps that can do just that like download the app on your ipod that has a camera and put it in a living room and see the recording on your computer or something

Answer
Interesting question. You have two basic options.

1.) Video Baby monitor: Some can be used over the internet to monitor your kitchen anywhere, anytime. Can be wired or wireless. It's powerful and most mothers use it nowadays. Downside is, it's not discreet and once your sister knows it's there, she can find a way to evade it.

2.) Video Spy Cameras: Your best shot. They are covert, can be hidden anywhere. You can easily find wall-clocks with hidden cams, flowerpot, tissue box, even a tape recorder. I bet you can also find microwave oven with hidden cams, so many more.

Of course there are other options but these two are the cheapest options you can get.

How much would it cost to equip a home with deaf technology?

Katie

If you were to add a special smoke detector, door bell lights, vibrating alarm clock, TTY, and other technologies, how much would that cost?

Answer
I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying
ummm thats about it from what I can think of. Other wise for appointments and class and college stuff like that and for more direct communication I use a ASL (sign language) interpreter.
There are also High power hearing aids, cochlear implants and the BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) if you want to try and "restore" some hearing, or use residual hearing you may have. but note these methods are case to case and are not always effective and can fail

I need to strengthen My Wifi?

amber l

I need to strengthen my wifi connection if at all possible without having to run a cable through my house. We have a main computer that the internet box is connected to and that gets internet just fine (obviously) but any time we try to use the wifi from other devices in the house (while someones using the main computer) the wifi is utter crap no matter where you are in the house. Is there a way I can strengthen the wifi so that i can use the internet from my computer without any problems?

Answer
Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

Your best bet, especially for serious online gaming or streaming, is a direct Ethernet connection between your computer and the wireless router.

If it is not feasible to run Ethernet cable the next best option would be a set of powerline network adapters http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

You plug one in by your router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

For stationary devices I recommend Ethernet connections, however I realize that this is impractical for devices such as tablets, iPods, cell phones, etc.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

If you still have a weak wireless signal you can either get a wireless extender or a wireless adapter with better range for your WiFi device.

Wireless adapters come in many types and sizes, you may want a high power USB model with external antennas. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=high%20power%20wireless%20adapter&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374458138&rh=n%3A13983791%2Ck%3Ahigh%20power%20wireless%20adapter%2Cp_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2941120011&tag=excharge-20

Devices such as wireless extenders can expand your wireless range by receiving weak wireless signals and repeating them to extend the signal range to greater distances.

Here are the two most popular highly rated models on Amazon.

Securifi Almond - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0087NZ31S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0087NZ31S&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

Netgear Universal WN3000RP - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

That being said,

How fast is your Internet connection? http://speedtest.net

If you are going to have multiple users or simultaneous devices such s ROKU boxes to do HD streaming, then you'll want a minimum of 10 Mbps or faster. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

Your Internet bandwidth is shared among all of the users of your LAN. So any bandwidth others are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required.

Many people would be likely be surprised at how many active connections their wireless router has. I have dozens. cell phones, tablets, iPods, game consoles, laptops, desktops, ROKU boxes, Internet enabled devices such as TVs and audio receivers, and the list goes on.

Depending on your exact location, you can choose from several different types of broadband Internet access. They include DSL, cable, fiber, satellite, and wireless from a cellular provider.

DSL is generally the cheapest broadband option, however it is also usually the slowest.

Cable - Cable Internet is a form of broadband Internet transmitted over coaxial television cables. Cable Internet speeds range from 1 Mbps to over 300 Mbps using newer DOCSIS 3.0 technology.

Fiber - Newer fiber optic services can be as fast as 1000 Mbps. Fiber connections can also provide on demand HD television and digital telephone service on the same line.

There are also 3G and 4G wireless mobile broadband services and satellite Internet, but these are normally only used where Cable or DSL are unavailable due to the higher cost, slower speeds and low monthly bandwidth limits.

To compare speed and prices of your local competitors, go to a ISP comparison site that lets you input your address, and compare the pricing and terms of the offers that are available in your area. In the US you can use this one http://isp1.us/find/ .

The physical address is needed because some services, particularly DSL, are very distance sensitive. For example you might be able to get a specific level of service while your next door neighbor can't.

You'll want to pick the fastest plan that fits your budget. In some areas this can be 500 Mbps+. But these high end broadband plans are expensive. You may find that something in the 10 to 50 Mbps range might satisfy your needs at a much lower cost.

Good Luck...

Will my Dell Studio XPS 8100 run very high or ultra high graphics games like Crysis or GTA 4?

Juice

I just ordered a Dell Studio XPS 8100 Desktop with 64bit windows 7 intel i5 750 @ 2.66Ghz 8 MB Cache 6 GB Dual Channel DDR3 @ 1333mhz 4 DIMMs RAM nVIDIA Geforce G310 512MB DDR3 Video Card 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 16 MB cache Dell ST2010 HD widescreen Monitor. Will this computer run GTA 4 or Crysis in very high or ultra high?
What video card should I get?
and what power supply do I need?

Answer
Only if you upgrade the graphics card (and possibly power supply, depending upon which card you select). The G310 is an entry-level card which can't even run cutting-edge games like Crysis on medium. You'd need at least a Radeon 5770 or GTX 260 (roughly $175 cards) to run at very high detail, and a Radeon 5850 or GTX 285 is more like it.

For maximum detail you'd need an ultra-powerful GPU... that's what $400-$500 cards like the Radeon 5870 and GTX 295 are for.

For gaming computers the graphics card is the single most important component, having twice the impact of your CPU on frame rates.

*** Update***

You can run $75 cards like the Radeon 4670 and GeForce GT240 without having to upgrade the factory power supply.

The Radeon 5770 requires at least a 450W power supply.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003

The GTX 260 and Radeon 4890 require a minimum 500W power supply which supplies 36 amps on the +12V rails. So for those cards, get something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004

The Radeon 5850 is much more powerful, that's the card to get if you've got $300 to spend. Check the user reviews:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102857
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103085
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131184

The same power supplies linked above (for the GTX 260/Radeon 4890) will work. Although with one of these babies, you'll have more breathing room for future upgrades:

Baby Goldfish (1 and 2 inches) housing question?

Kitty

I currently have 2 baby goldfish. One is 1" long and the other is closer to 2". I currently have them in a large aquarium (29g) but having monitored them for nearly a week now, I am noticing they are having a very difficult time finding their food. These guys are in a 'grow out' tank to allow them to gain some mass before they go into my main goldfish tank (a 55g soon to be 75 gallon tank with 2 other goldfish).
Since they are so small and obviously having issues finding food I was wondering if I could move them a five gallon tank until they both gained about an inch or so in size. The tank is filtered for 10g but I believe the size would work better until they get a bit more sure of themselves at finding and eating their food. The 5 gallon is cycled though it would be emptied of its current occupants (who will be moving into their newly cycled 10 gallon in the next few days).
My main concern is stunting the little guys growth. My older goldies are between 4" and 7" and I'd like the babies to be at LEAST 3" before they are moved into the big boys tank to prevent too much rough housing.
Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Answer
I'd move them into the smaller tank until they get a little bigger. Like you said, it sounds like they need to get a bit more sure of themselves before you let them loose in a larger tank. Hope this helps, and good luck with these guys! :D

Savannah monitor time!!!!!!!!!?

schanookie

O.K. i have decided after much thought that i am getting a Savannah monitor to add to my reptile family.

i just want some experienced owners opinion's.

set up

when its a hatchling (when i buy it) or possibly slighty older. I'm going to start it off With a 15 gal tank. Nice big hide and nice big water dish.
UVB
75 watt spotlight basking light
and Cypress mulch or reptile carpet.

when it almost gets two feet its moving on to my spare 40 gal critter cage. and when it hits just about 3 and a half or 4 feet of he/she goes to a costume made house. dint worry im good at that part have costume cages for iguana and bearded dragon.

Diet
well as a baby its gonna eat lots of crickets meal worms and small pinkies. when it hits like 2 feet it will eat larger mice XL crickets and possibly feeder roaches, eggs, lighty cooked ground Turkey, and some boiled chicken pieces.

and fruits!!!

but im not entirely sure what kinds of fruits are best can recommend some.

Tame?

well im expectingg it to be a lil feisty in its younger years. but i will do my best to tame it, is that part hard? is your sav tame?

well is there any thing else im missing?

thx for taking the time to read this 10 points for best answer hands down

Answer
Never give a Savannah Monitor fruits, they are not Crested Geckos or Gray's Monitor. I'd prefer to give hard boiled eggs with the shell because it's less messy and has extra calcium. I'd only give pinkies every 2-3 weeks for babies and rats/mice once a month for juveniles and adults because they are very fattening. Give them raw or boiled turkey, never fried, grilled, bake or broiled. Taming is really easy if you get them while they are babies, just handle them daily, hand feed them, walk them and give them treats while you play with them.

baby doesn't eat baby cereal any more?

kitkat_

what should i give her instead. i'm worried that she doesn't get the nutrients it has inside the cereal. i only I only give her in the mornings and evenings . meat and vegies noon and dinner time.

Answer
Infant cereal is junk food that no baby needs EVER. It is full of oils, and sugars, and chemicals to improve "mouth feel".

If you want your baby to get iron feed them foods rich in iron:
Meat
Beans/Lentils
Lima Beans
Asparagus
Green Peas
Spinach
Apricots/Peaches
Apples
Dates
Broccoli
Any green leafy veg
Watermelon

Meat is an important first food, cereal is not. Meat and meat substitutes contain iron and zinc in an easy to digest form. Infant cereal has only added iron that is hard to digest.

"Start with small amounts of high iron foods like iron-fortified infant cereal or well-cooked finely minced meat"
http://www.bchealthguide.org/healthfiles/hfile69c.stm

"First foods. During the transition to solid foods, it is vital that infants continue to ingest an adequate volume of breast milk or formula. Introduction of solid foods should be based on the physiologic and developmental maturity of the infant in combination with our understanding of nutrient requirements for the rapidly growing infant. Iron-containing foods are recommended as the first foods. The use of single foods makes it easier to identify the cause of an allergic reaction, were it to occur. In Canada, the most commonly used first food is iron-fortified infant cereal. Meat and alternatives are iron-containing foods that can also be introduced at this stage. The foods in this group include meats, fish, poultry, cooked egg yolks, and alternatives such as well-cooked legumes and tofu. Iron from meat sources is better absorbed than iron from non-meat sources."
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/pubs/infant-nourrisson/nut_infant_nourrisson_term_6_e.html

"In addition, infants need lots of protein and cereal has a low protein-calorie ratio (even lower when mixed with water or fruit). Many experts (including LLL) suggest giving meat or other foods naturally rich in iron instead of foods with added iron. "
http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/first-foods.html

Although meat is considered an excellent source of iron, it has not always been perceived as a suitable first complementary food. Our perception of first foods has been strongly influenced by the marketing of fortified cereal-based foods, even though the iron absorbed from these foods is extremely low.

A recent study has confirmed that the consumption of highly refined and fortified cereal foods may not be the best way to maintain adequate iron status for infants. Researchers from the University of Colorado wanted to determine the nutritional efficacy and effect on infants of the consumption of either meat or iron-fortified infant cereal as their first complementary food. They randomized 84 exclusively breastfed infants at four months of age to receive either pureed beef or iron-fortified infant cereal as the first complementary food, starting after five months and continuing until seven months. In addition to anthropometrical and developmental data, the infants were monitored for zinc and iron status at nine months.

What they found:

1. Zinc intakes were greater for the meat group.

2. Head circumference was larger for the meat group.

3. Tolerance and acceptance was similar for the two groups.

4. Biochemical indicators were similar for both groups.

5. Motor and mental measurements did not differ between the two groups, but the meat group had a higher behaviour index."
https://www.infactcanada.ca/Winter_2006_Pg6_.htm
"Cereal is not at all necessary, particularly the baby cereals. Regular (whole grain) oatmeal is more nutritious for your baby."
http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/first-foods.html

"The truth is, there is nothing special about these foods that makes them better to start out with. Babies don't actually even need rice cereal."

Baby's Own Room?

At how many months or age should a baby be sleeping in his/her own room at night? My baby it's turning 3 months in four days. He sleeps all night in his crib but in my room, doesn't wake-up for feedings or diaper changes. He goes to sleep at 10:00pm already bathed and feed. And he doesn't wake-up until 6:00am or 8:00am for a diaper change and a feeding. Is it a goodtime now to send him to his room with a monitor?

Answer
According to a public health nurse I was speaking to, she advised waiting until the baby is 6 months of age, when the risks of a baby dying of SIDS is on the decline. 4 months of age is when the risk of SIDS is at the greatest, and sleeping in the same room as you puts the baby at less risk. Apparently, babies don't sleep as deeply in the same room as you because they are constantly roused by the movements of others in the room. This lighter state of sleep means they are more likely to rouse themselves if something was to go wrong...such as they stop breathing. Since your baby is certainly sleeping well, I would say there really isn't any rush to get him in his own room. I would wait until he was 6 months.

Wireless internet keeps disconnecting?

James

Hi,

We've been having a problem with our wireless internet for a while now. The system runs off our main office computer via a router for the house.

When using my Macbook, i can easily connect. However, when i try to open 2 tabs or stream a Youtube video, it disconnects and says no DSL connection. I then wait 5 minutes, and i can reconnect again. The same happens when i'm using my computer and my mum is using her iPad.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? We live in a old house with pretty thick walls which i know can be a problem. However, when I'm in the next room which is separated from the office by a modern, thin wall, the problem still occurs. I rang my internet provider and they said that living in a house with thick walls is the problem, but I don't think this is quite the case.

Anyone have any recommendations? We are currently with Chess Broadband, quite a crappy company I think. Do you think the problem would be solved if we went to someone like BT?

Any info would be great. Thanks

Answer
Place your router to maximize effectiveness. Where you place your router has a lot to do with how it performs. When placing a router, consider putting it:
Near the center of the house, on a top floor. Radio waves best travel down and laterally.
Off the floor, ideally on a wall mount or high shelf.
As far as possible from your neighbor's WiFi router
Away from cordless phones and microwaves
Away from power cords, computer wires, microwaves, baby monitors, and halogen lamps

Question regarding dropped internet connection that happens 20-50+ times a day?

tehpwnerer

I have Charter internet, a Linksys CM-100 modem, and an Airport Extreme simultaneous dual band wireless base station. Whether I am playing Xbox, watching Hulu on my MacBook Pro, playing an online game on my iPad, or browsing the web on my iMac, the internet just randomly stops working, but I don't lose connection to the router and the router doesn't go from a green light to an amber light to signal a problem. If I leave it long enough, it will fix itself, but when I am mid game or video and I lose my connection it really aggrivates me. To try and troubleshoot the problem I tried out a Linksys WRT54GS v7.2 to see if that would have similar problems, and it has. The modem lights all stay lit up as usual as if there is no problem there. It cannot be that 3 routers (I bought a new Airport Extreme when my old one was having this same problem thinking it was that router) have the exact same problem. What is my next troubleshooting step? Plug something straight into the modem and see if it happens? On any given day I lose my connection at least 20 times, if not 50 or more. It is not wireless interference as I have tried turning wireless off and plugging straight into the router via ethernet cable. My thoughts were to try plugging directly into the modem to see if the problem persists, and if it does, try a different modem, and if it still persists have Charter test the lines in my house.

Any feedback or anyone had similar problems? Thanks.

Answer
Yes plug directly into the modem with an Ethernet cable.

Has it every worked successfully for a long period of time? If yes then call the ISP and have them test the lines could be an issue on their side.

If it works directly plugged into the modem via Ethernet cable. Then you have narrowed the issue to being some thing within or around your home.

Things to check for when checking for RFI issues.
Do you have any fluorescent lights?
Cordless phone?
Concrete wall?
Steel?
Baby monitor?

Are any of the equipment plugged into the same wall or room? If yes, then some contractors will save money when building an apartment, house, etc.. Which means they are not running the wires properly and can cause issues for internet connection with ADSL aka DSL.

Are you using ADSL or Cable?

Have you set the Channels in the modem?
Have you deleted the plist for the connection in you OS X?
Are you running the same OS X on all Mac's?
If yes, then try another OS such as 10.4.x instead of 10.5.x or a Windows OS?

Most ISP's will give free tech support (inclusive of your monthly service) call them and see what help they can provide from their side of things. Hopefully they are more helpful than some that I have worked with and know about.

IMAC that I have did have issues with FIOS and it was working for several months then stopped working properly. It kept having a random connection that was very annoying it could last seconds to even hours of no connection. It was only affecting my IMAC and not the Windows 2K Pro which was really odd. Found out I missed a very important update from Apple after some major work from me I got it updated and it ran for another 8 months. Then it drove me crazy with what you are talking about and working via Wireless for my sisters computer that had Vista and worked wired with Win 2K Pro. Thought of when it started and realized that by telling the ISP to upgrade my speed to 20MBs download and 5MB's upload. That is when it started so I had to fight with them and they looked it over, it was not provisioned correctly.

After that it worked but still had issues and had to deleted the plist from the Library that refers to the connection, sorry I am drawing a blank on the full name. Also had to trash the TCP/IP Preferences of course restart the IMAC and it will add the plist back along with the rest of the things needed.

Maybe some of this has been very helpful or at least given you some more things to try. That will help you narrow down where the issue is.

Whats the name of this movie about a girl swapping baby monitors and overhears someone get killed?

Q. I saw a movie years ago and can't remember what its called it had a younger girl who I think was the babysitter but I can't remember, she had blonde hair and I think she was babysitting a blonde haired boy in a apartment building. And she accidently swaps out baby monitors with a neighbor and the neighbor lady gets killed and then the people come after her. But I can't remember the name. Can someone please help??????

Answer
Baby Monitor: Sound of Fear (1998 TV movie)
starring Josie Bissett, Jason Beghe, Barbara Tyson
IMDb synopsis:
A woman overhears her husband on the telephone at their workplace talking with their babysitter. She discovers they are having an affair and are going to have a baby. She concocts an evil plan to win back her husband and remove the girl and baby. Two men are hired to kill the girl and hold the son hostage in order for her to play the hero and reclaim her husband. The plan hits a snag when the criminals enter the wrong apartment.

Are plain, old baby monitors adequate?

Mariposa

I'm being a bit proactive and have decided to educate myself on all these baby gadgets. I had a pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage, so even though I was only pregnant a short time, I remember how stressed I was trying to figure out all of this stuff.
So my question is... I thought baby monitors were a dime a dozen. Never knew there were motion sensors, 49 mhz and 900 mhz, video, laptop viewable, etc etc etc. The reviews saying how some mother's felt their babies lives were saved by the motion sensors got me into "paranoid-mommy-to-be" mode. When I was little, everyone had those Graco, lights when the baby makes noise versions. Does anyone find that these are perfectly adequate for their babies, or are the motion sensors/video models really a better choice? Keeping in mind that I'm trying to restrain myself from one day spending thousands of dollars on things a baby will use for a year. :)

Thank you!

Answer
I didn't use one - we live in an apartment, were never going to be that far from the baby, I'm skeptical about gagetry, and I had a sixth sense that alerted me whenever my little one had a hiccup in the next room.

If I'd had a big house I might have gotten a simple monitor, but I think a lot of these things are designed to separate you from your wallet ...and will surely rob you of more sleep than you can afford in general.

Just my $.02 - and I know how it feels to be prenatally paranoid. I'm sure I had plenty of my own issues although this wasn't one of mine. :)

What's the best Wireless IP camera to monitor a baby?

caliducas

Answer
Wireless cameras are getting really cheap. it gets down to how much do you want to spend. Next, what kind of picture (best), do you want a camera that can pan and zoom (probably you don't need that), and sound (might be good). If you spend a little time looking at them you can narrow it down. Avoid the cheapest ones and get a name brand one. for this you need a wifi camera that plugs into 110 electricity (usa standard). I have 3 in my house. If you search carefully, you can even get a camera that you can bring up on your smart phone. If you have a name brand wireless router like dlink, linksys or netgear, try for a wireless camera made by them. that way it will be simple to connect to the router. Newegg has great prices and no taxes.

Baby monitor with camera?

Love

I'm having my first child in December and my mom and I are looking at baby monitors and we found on that had a camera and shows you a live image of the baby. My mom was pretty impressed by this as they weren't around when I was a baby. But they are outrageously priced! I think she wants to get one for me anyway, as this is her first grandchild and my mom's the type to spend way too much. So I was wondering does anyone else have these? Worth the price? Are they any good?

Answer
I actually did this, but I used a wireless ip camera. When my son was 9 months old we had to move from a condo to an apartment with no washer/dryer hookup. So I had to leave the apartment to do the laundry a couple doors down and needed a way to see what my son was up to in between loads. I agree that the video monitor setups are very steep. And something worth noting is that every single one I've seen on shelves is not a secured network. So that video signal is open for others to view nearby. I use(d) a dlink IP cam that is networked securely to my home wireless network and accessible via smartphone. It cost about 30 bucks and 15 minutes of setup and I was up and going. I've had this setup for almost 3 years now and it's been helpful. I don't think I've had any memorable absences, but it's a nice piece of mind to make sure my son was sleeping safely when I had to leave the apartment for a moment.

Answer
We have the Sony baby monitor like pictured in the link below. The only difference it that our's is blue not tan as pictured. We got ours in 2004 when I was preggo with my first. I am having #3 on Thursday and this is still working wonderfully!!

The part that goes in the child's room plugs into the wall and the parent portion is rechargable. I plug it in to recharge every 2-3 nights. It's effective and inexpensive...and comes with everything you need to just set up and go!

Good luck!

Clearblue Fertility Monitor - Programmed for 2 Peak & 2 High?

billygisth

I've been reading a lot of the questions/answers regarding the CBF Monitor and I've seen this a couple of times - - - that the monitor is programmed to give you two peak days, then two high days and then go back to low. Therefore folks have stated to stop testing after your first peak day. Is this true? Reason I ask is b/c on my day 9 I was low and then day 10 & 11 I was PEAK (with no high days inbetween). Today, day 12, I'm high. Thoughts? Should I stop testing?
And one more question for you - On my first peak day (day 10), my husband & I 'baby danced' that night; did not on day 11. Thoughts on that as well?
Sorry for all the questions... Thanks in advance!

An over the counter conception aid that can help you maximize your chances of conceiving your baby better than any other method. It is the most advanced technology available without a prescription. It is the first and only palm-sized electronic system that monitors your personal hormones to provide you with an unmistakable display of your personal level of fertility every day of your cycle. The Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor measures 2 key hormones to more accurately identify more fertile days than any other over the counter method while storing your personalized data for up to six cycles.

How accurate is the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor?
In laboratory testing, the Monitor was found to be 99% accurate in detecting the LH surge.
It is important to remember that there are no products available that can guarantee success in achieving pregnancy. The Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor is suitable for women whose natural monthly cycle normally lasts between 21 to 42 days in length. If you have intercourse during High and Peak Fertility days it can help you maximize your chances of conceiving your baby.

It tracks 2 hormones, estrogen and LH through urine samples. After inserting the test sticks into the unit, a result will given as to whether you are in a Low, High, or Peak Fertile period. This unit stores your information for several months.
Who Should Use It:

You are fairly regular
You are looking for a method that requires no self interpretation, as it does all the work for you.
You may still use the ClearPlan Easy Fertility Monitor if you are taking Clomid, but please be aware that the Fertility Monitor may not reliably detect High Fertility. However, it may still be possible to detect Peak Fertility. Therefore, if you are taking Clomid and trying to conceive, you may still benefit from using the ClearPlan Easy Fertility Monitor, but consult with your physician first. In a recent study on patients using the ClearPlan Easy Fertility Monitor while taking Clomid, some patients did experience more High Fertility days when taking Clomid but their Peak Fertility days were still accurately identified.
You Should Not Use It If::

Your doctor has determined that you are not ovulating spontaneously
Your cycles are shorter than 22 days or longer than 42 days.
Your cycles are erratic and very irregular
You have been diagnosed with PCOS
You have recently been pregnant, are currently/recently stopped breast feeding, stopped using hormonal contraception. You should have at least 2 natural cycles before using this product.
You have impaired kidney function
You can not reliably take the test the same time every morning.
You are on anti-biotics that contains tetracyclines
You are using hormonal contraception, certain fertility treatments (especially those containing hCG and LH) and hormone replacement therapy.

The New And Advanced OV-Watch® is worn on the woman's wrist while she sleeps. Women start wearing OV-Watch® on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd day of their menstrual cycle and wear it through ovulation. It measures a woman's changes in her chloride ion levels that are secreted in perspiration every 30 minutes and records up to 12 readings per period.

OVWatch's patented technology detects the chloride ion surge and alerts the woman to FERTILE DAY 1, FERTILE DAY 2, FERTILE DAY 3, FERTILE DAY 4, OVULATION DAY 1, and the day after. It is the ONLY device of its kind that can give you the 4 days BEFORE ovulation. That can make all the difference when you are trying to conceive.

Please see the User Reference Guide for complete instructions on "how to start your next cycle". OVWatch® can be used for this pregnancy and subsequent pregnancies, and unlike urine based products can be shared with a friend after you are pregnant.

With OV-Watch's Advanced Technology, you will get Advanced Notice of ovulation. It is a common misconception for couples trying to conceive that they should only have intercourse when the female is ovulating. It is true that the time of ovulation is when the sperm fertilizes the egg for conception; however, the day of ovulation is not the only day that is considered "fertile".

According to several published medical articles the highest probability of conception occurs with intercourse on the days prior to ovulation, rather than the day of ovulation itself. Most health experts believe a woman's cervical mucus is at its most fertile stage in the days before ovulation1. And since sperm is reported to live for 6 days in the genital tract, having intercourse on those four days before ovulation may hold a woman's highest probability of conception for that month.

OV-Watch differs from the LH urine stick tests, in that it detects the 4 crucial days before ovulation, as opposed to the LH test sticks that simply detect the LH surge that is 12-24 hours before ovulation.

Using urine strips and charting temperature to identify when you are ovulating can be messy, inconvenient, and may lead to inaccurate results. Urine testing for the LH surge may miss ovulation in up to one third of women. A woman's LH surge is detected in the urine only 12-24 hours before ovulation.

Only OV-Watch's patented technology can find the 4 days before you ovulate in an easy to use, lightweight, wrist -mounted fertility predictor. Those 4 days do make all the difference when trying to conceive. Why waste any more time.

How far can a 900 MHz monitor get?

Paige

I'm talking about baby monitor. Is it the same as a cordless phone range? Is it better than 49 MHz (as it's much higher frequency)?
Thanks for the answers. So you both says it doesn't matter on the difference as long as it's used in a house.

I was confused as some retailer shows the frequency but not the distance. While another shows the distance but no frequency (e.g. 49 MHz or 900 MHz. And another shows 120 m or 400')

Could anybody suggest which one is better to choose from? (based on the frequency or the distance)

Answer
Higher frequencies are more easily blocked, so lower frequency ones will probably have a better range. Both should work inside your house.
It depends more on the power output than on the frequency.

There may be less interference and noise with the 900Mhz one

Can your neighbors listen in on your phone conversations with a baby monitor ?

Lady

If you're on your cordless phone in your home? I've heard that its possible for neighbors with baby monitors to do this to their neighbors, and I wouldn't think this would work, unless my cordless phone acts as a monitor.

Answer
It's possible if the phone and the monitors work in the same broadcast frequency.

Most do not, however. Modern cordless phones operate in the 2.4ghz wavelength, and older ones operate in the 900mhz wavelength (the newest ones operate in the 5.2ghz wavelength, but don't worry about those).

Most baby monitors work in the 300-900mhz wavelength, so a few of them *can* pick up on older cordless phones, but those that do are few and far between... especially becase every phone and monitor is coded to only pick up a very specific frequency around their specified range... so crosstalk is less likely.

Answer
Well you sound very accomplished in your life so far even though you are young. You should be proud of yourself.

But why do you need 4 bassinets and cribs???
I also think that 15 baby monitors might be TOO many as well.
get baby hangers.....probably stock up on the next couple sizes of diapers as well that a way you'll have them when you need them.
I think you should probably get more of those spoons and sippy cups
plus I also dont think that you need 4 changing tables b/c you only have 3 babies and it's not like you'll be necessarily be changing each and everyone of them at the same time you know?
get baby lotion and shampoo as well. Probably little baby towels would be handy.
Playpens and playyards are the same thing....I also don't really think that you'll need that many either. Why dont you look up the playpen that they have on Babysrus and it comes with twins bassinets on top...Very good ratings on it and it will save you money.

fetal heart monitors?

Christophe

hi all, i was just wondering has anyone used any fetal heart monitors at home? i am 18 weeks, and would like to uy one but some of them out there have bad ratings.. so any suggestions> which one did u use? how well did it work ? thanks in advance?

Answer
I bought one and it arrived in the mail about 3 weeks ago. I was exactly 12 weeks when it arrived and I was able to hear the baby's heartbeat the first night. I now listen to it once a day just to make sure everything is going good. Mine is an Angel Sounds Baby Heart Prenatal Monitor. I found it on different websites for around $70 but I found it on E-bay for $33. The only downside is that it is shipped from Hong Kong and it took about 2 weeks to get to me. But it was worth the wait. I would highly suggest it. And don't invest in any expensive u/s gel. I use mineral oil and have used lotion as well. Any kind of lube is good. I've included the link to the one I bought below. Hope this helps!

Answer
I have the safety 1st high definition baby monitor. It is great. It is so clear that even on the lowest volume I can hear the baby wake up, and at mid-high volume I can hear the baby breathe. It also has zero interference from radios, cell phones, wireless internet, etc. No static at all, great reception, and decent battery life. It's also only $60 compared to the other zero interference monitors.

Is it easy to install baby safety gates?

Adam

I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old's protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

Answer
It's not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child...after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

DIY-Birth: why do women do it?

Sesshoumar

Why do you think some women have their children at home, without any asisstance?

Please be aware, I'm not trying to critize women who do this, as I respect their right to do so. I'm simply trying to understand the deeper reasons why some people are driven to this.

Answer
When you have an "attendant" at a birth you are giving away your power -and you start listening to them rather than to yourself. Once you stop listening to your own body you are in a dangerous place. A birth attendant can't tell you when you are ready to push, etc. Some women are more susceptible to this than others

On the other hand a knowledgeable and supportive person at the birth is definitly helpful. But as a subordinate to the mother.

However most doctors and obs are dangerous. Hospital births are continually shown to be more dangerous than home-birth in low risk pregnancies. Doctors, OBs and the whole medical system are more worried about what will look good if they are sued then what is actually best for the baby. It seems that no matter how many studies show continuous fetal monitoring does far more harm than good they will continue to do it. No matter how many studies show that obstetrics is the branch of medicine with the least number of policies and procedures backed by science they will implement first -research second (if at all).

I had a homebirth transfer - I will never step foot in the hospital again during birth unless I am dead or dying. I was treatened, bullied, and harrassed. But even WORSE they screwed up and gave my son the wrong treatment WITHOUT MY CONSENT. It is a good thing he was and still is an extremely healthy boy. It could have been much worse.

My next birth was at home and my only complaint is you can't support your own perineum and its really hard to explain to your husband what you need during labour. I have a friend who is a midwife she was invited to this birth but didn't make it. Maybe she will be invited next time, maybe not. I certainly appreciated her sewing skills later that day.

temperature alarm for baby room?

Serena W

I am looking for a devise much like a wireless indoor/outdoor electronic temperature reading station except I need this one to have a special feature.

We have a 3 month old baby, and I need a way to monitor the tempurature in her room remotely...to the point of if it gets too cold or too hot (preset my me) it will sound an audable alarm when we are sleeping on the other side of the house.

Does anybody out there know of such a device, and if so...could you please include the model number? I've spent about an hour looking online for one...but they simply do not exist.

Thank you for your help.

Answer
my baby monitor is digital and shows the temperature (not exact but approximate) i believe its made by safety 1st, to can set it so that an alarm goes off when it gets too hot or cold, and you set the temeperature alarms yourself, http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=3822379

Room temperature for 16 month old?

Danni

The cold season is creeping up and now I have the problem of deciding when is the right time to start up the heaters. I'm mostly worried about my 16 month old daughter, she has her own heater in her room but I haven't turned it on. In the mornings when I go to wake her up, the monitor says it's 63-66 degrees in there and I'm worried that's too cold... she doesn't like to keep socks on so her fingers and toes are always freezing!

What would be the right temperature for a toddler's room?
She use to wear feety jammies but I've put off buying new ones because she's inbetween sz 18m and 24m... short legs for the 24m and too big a belly for 18m.

Answer
According to baby center, the temperature for a baby's room should be between 65-70. I always keep our daughters room on the cooler side since it's better for the sinuses and sleeping in general, and I always dress her in long sleeves and pants even in the Summer months since she always somehow wiggles out of the blankets, so by having longer sleeves and pants she doesn't freeze nor does she overheat in the Summer if the room temp is kept cool. She too does not like to keep socks on. Here's a tip on that, get her longer pants (bigger pj's) that cover her feet too. It worked for our daughter and she didn't feel she had socks on since her toes were "loose" LOL Just my 2cents. =)

What if my son doesn't get along well with the twins?

I_Love_ma_

I've heard that some kids don't get along well with new siblings( especially 2). Jaylin is 2 years old and VERY spoiled! He loves all my attention! What would I do if he doesn't like the twins?

Answer
I can't really tell if the twins are around yet for him to be annoyed by.

Every child that age who have no siblings are like that. I promise. I have two children who are two years apart, and for months I worried Cameron would resent baby Colin.

It was a non-issue.

You can try a few of these ideas, though:

You don't mention how often your son is around other children. That can make a difference, since even though he has the attention at home, does he have to share it at daycare or something? Also, are there any other kids in the family, or is he the only one?

If he's the only baby around, then it's possible he has the attention not because he demands it, but by default, since there's no one there to share it. It could be he'll not have a lot of trouble sharing some of the limelight.

1. Keep them involved. Let him know babies are in Momma's tummy. Show him the sonogram pictures. If the doctor allows it, take him to a doctor visit to let him hear the baby's heartbeat, or let him in the room before labor turns ugly and let him listen then and/or watch the monitors. Let him know that it's a little boy or girl like him and what the babys' names will be. You can even let him pick out a present for the baby. My son picked out a stuffed cookie monster for the baby, and every night he put the plush in the crib with Colin.) If you do all this, it'll be a little less of a shock when there are these little red bundles of crying taking up all of Momma's time.

2. Sell him on the cool parts of being a big brother. A big one that worked well for us was that big brothers get to eat real food (and cookies and drink chocolate milk or juice in bob the builder sippy cups) while babies only get white milk in baby bottles (we even let him have a taste of the baby's milk, and he decided on his own that apple juice and cookies are a better snack). Big brothers also got to go to bed a little later at night and wear Spiderman pajamas and look at books.

3. Two years old is young, but there are things he can do to help, and that can really help him feel needed in the family. He's lost his spot as the one to be adored, so helping him carve out a place in the group will help him. At two, he can sit on the couch and, with close supervision, "hold" the baby. He can give the baby a bottle, give a pacifier, sing a lullaby, make faces. Cameron loved burping the baby, too, but that needs to be done very very carefully so they don't hit the baby's back too hard. I think he liked the instant reward of actually getting a burp out of the baby. :-) He can help pick out clothes for the baby to wear, or which blanket he can be wrapped in. At that age, they like to have some control even over little things. Letting him make those simple decisions can help him feel he hasn't lost control all over the place. Two-year-olds are great for entertaining the baby during spongebaths or diaper changes (change diapers on the floor using a mat, and he can sit across from you and entertain the baby by singing, talking, making faces, showing off a stuffed animal, etc.) Of course, it goes without saying that EXTREME supervision should be practiced. A big advantage is that kids from about 1-1/2 years old to about 3-years-old or older are fascinated by babies, and they love to love on them. Encourage it!

4. Don't cast him aside. There are, of course, times when he will have to not be in the middle of things. When you are at the hospital having the baby, let him know what's going on, but have something really fun planned for him. My older child went to stay with Grandma and Grandpa, who always have bananas. They had pizza for dinner. :-) Depending on the hospital and their policies, if he's allowed to come up there, and if there is a tv and vcr, get him a new video to bring up to the hospital after the baby is born. We put a brand new Blues Clues video in, and that way, Cameron was able to be with us and near the baby without having to focus on too much for him to handle.

5. I know this sounds wierd, but of the children, early on, the one most in need of being held, given attention, etc. is the older child. I'm not saying ignore the newborns, but if they're sleeping, they can be put down to bed and older brother can have that time with Momma and Daddy. Basically, early on, all the newborn will do is sleep, eat and poo (sometimes all at once). They won't need that much expressive attention, and can't handle that much without going into sensory overload. But if you consider how big a change this is, the older child, at just two years old, will not be prepared to lose his cuddle time, and he shouldn't have to. He didn't choose to have the baby. Even if he has to share time and attention, which he does, there are ways to help with it. For example, when the baby is being nursed or bottle-fed, big brother can sit up with Momma and baby and listen to a story, or watch Sesame Street, or sing songs, or just talk. Multi-tasking is one of the main things moms have to learn to do. :-) Doing that could also provide some wonderful time to not only bond with the new babies, but to allow the siblings to bond, and to bond as an entire family.

6. Don't blame the baby for things the two-year-old has lost. If he wants ot have a story, or whatever, and the mother doesn't have the energy, saying "Momma's sleepy" is easier to accept without placing blame than "The baby kept Momma up all night."

These things, as well as special little suprises (something my kids love is that I pick up "birthday" paper plates with their favorite characters, so they think it's cool when they get to have a Batman or Mickey Mouse plate or whatever) and just lots of love and acceptance, I think your son will be fine. My kids are best buds now, and they argue, but I'm glad we had them so close together.

Hope some of this helped. Congratulations to you and your family!

Multiple Babies?

TwinMommy

I know that taking fertility meds, such as Clomid, makes you release multiple eggs. I'm just curious, how many people who have taken Clomid and become pregnant have had twins or more?

I would love to have twin babies!

Answer
The risk for twins with clomid is small and the risk for high order multiples (3 or more) with clomid is even smaller. Clomid is designed to help make ovualtin stronger or happen in the first place and many times still only one egg will reach maturity and release, though there are times when two eggs will become mature and release. This can be observed through vaginal ultrasounds around the time of ovulation.

A higher risk of multiples is linked to the use of injectable meds such as Follistim and Gonal-F. It is very common to produce a large number of eggs with these meds and in my last cycle (was an IVF cycle) I produced 18 mature eggs. Injectable cycles are closely monitored with vaginal ultraounds and estrogen blood levels every few days

Interesting... I myself don't believe in ghosts But I know if that had happened to me
I would have been so scared!!

have you ever heard any ghost voices on your baby monitor?

john knee

Answer
Hello

Yes because it is an easier way for spirits to communicate via the specific frequencies and wavelengths. I would not be suprised if it was the spirit of your or your families loved ones/friends, coming back to let you know that they are ok and they love you and will watch over you and your baby.

Baby monitor - movement or video?

Kelsy

I dont need a sound monitor because the nursery will be right next door. Not sure which one to get the movement one for SIDS or the video one so you can see the baby at all times?

Answer
There's pro's and con's for each and most baby monitors will state on them that they aren't 100% accurate, especially the movement detectors for SIDS. There is no way a machine can work reliably 100% accurately on detecting movement to prevent SIDS.

If you're really worried about not being able to see your baby then I would opt for the video monitor so you can see him or her moving in the night and possibly see their chest rise and fall (depending on the quality of the image and light source).

Quality of video baby monitors?

Baby Julie

did they work for you, I want to get one for my sister but I don't know if its worth the money. Thanks for your answers!

Answer
I can't imagine that a video monitor is any improvement over a standard audio monitor. My cousin's GF has a Fisher-Price audio monitor and it works splendidly (they have a multilevel home). Picks up the baby's breathing so you can tell within moments that she is awake.

I need a list of things that are absolutely necessary to buy before my baby comes. I just know I will forget something and it would be helpful to have a to do list so to speak. If any of you have your own list or can provide a link to a list it would be so helpful thank you!
