Why was the FCC formed?

meggie

Why was the FCC formed?

Answer
Without regulation of the frequencies of radios, television, etc... there would be interference. Today there are all kinds of uses of the frequency spectrum - GPS, am, fm, satelite radio, tv, wireless, bluetooth, cell phones, traffic signs, radio controlled toys, baby monitors, outdoor thermometers, garage door openers, car look locks...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Communications_Commission
The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 as the successor to the Federal Radio Commission and is charged with regulating all non-federal government use of the radio spectrum (including radio and television broadcasting), and all interstate telecommunications (wire, satellite and cable) as well as all international communications that originate or terminate in the United States

Things that will probably happen before 2020

1. by 2020 most cars will be hybrids, even sports cars.
2. 3DTV will be the norm, and a even better version of HD will be created, surpassing 1080p
3. Cars will include sensors, which will monitor the distance from one car, or object, and slow down accordingly avoiding collisions.
4. GPS in cars will be intertwined in cars with an auto poilet system. Want to get drunk out of your mind, and don't have a driver. No problem, just set the course on your gps, and the car will drive there for you.
5. music will get better??? (please, oh, please, oh, please...)
6. Mircosoft will no longer be into video games due to their next system crashing with more red rings than the 360...
7. People will start pronouncing the years as, "TwentyTwenty", instead of "Two-Thousand-and-Twenty".

Hearing music on our baby monitor?

Sometimes our baby monitor will play childrens music, out of no where! What in the world? Anyone experience this?

Answer
Could you be picking up noise from another baby monitor nearby? Sometime when they are on the same frequency or whatever I think you can hear the sounds from other peoples monitors.

baby sleeping with mothers shirt?

Q. If I were to put my shirt that I had been wearing (to smell like me) next to my baby when she's sleeping, would she sleep more sound like when she does when she's on my chest? Any other tips would be great!
Ps. I did hear this on Grey's Anatomy. and yes I know about SIDS (what questioning parent doesn't?) I know loose things are dangerous, I'm not stupid. I was just wondering if it actually helped or not.

Answer
I would lay baby on top of it, don't drape it around her in case she bunches it all up around her nose. Also if you don't have one of those teddy bears that has a heart beat sound or a music/crib activity center with that sound, get a cheap clock that ticks, I tried, after a few nights of listening to the one in my boys room tick in the monitor all night, to remove it and he didn't sleep nearly as well. Also the Fisher Price Aquarium has a wave noise that sounds a lot like the shushing you do to the baby when it's crying and I find that really helps my boy when fussy. Now that I have put a heater in his room (winter is coming boo hoo) the white noise it generates when running puts him right to sleep. It's great! I wish I had put this in his room at 5 weeks old when he started sleeping in there LOL.

One tip I will give you is don't let baby get too used to falling asleep in your arms. As soon as the eyes start drooping, place baby down where you want her to sleep. This way she knows where she is so if she should only half wake, she won't necessarily wake up all the way because she is scared and doesn't know where she is. Be consistent on where baby sleeps, make day and night two different places for now to help baby keep days and nights straight. Daytime sleeping should be someplace with bright lights, noise, lots of activity around so she doesn't sleep too soundly, night time should be quiet and dark to encourage deep sleep for long periods of time. Don't worry, if baby needs sleep during the day it's amazing what they can sleep through! Once baby gets a solid routine (don't think schedule as it will never happen at the same time but there will be a definite pattern to your day) then you can slowly start getting her to nap in her night time place.

This is just what has been working relatively ok for me. A solid bedtime routine helps as well. Where you feed her just before bedtime and during her nighttime feedings should be different than the daytime feedings. Get her used to having a bath (if it makes her relaxed and sleepy, that didn't work for me, it just energizes my guy), changing into her pj's, having her bedtime bottle (I have a green bottle I try to use every night so that when he sees the different bottle he knows it's the bedtime bottle), place her into the crib and keep her calm by standing there, hand on chest, shushing her if she fusses. Once calm, walk away even if not asleep. Let the baby fuss, if she starts to cry go in and try to soothe her without picking her up. If she goes hysterical then pick her up (that's a given), calm her and put her back. It took about 2-3 nights of real fussing until he realized that this was where he was sleeping from now on, after that it just got easier. Now at 12 weeks, most nights (not all), I can lay him down with eyes wide open and with no suckie or music he will have himself asleep in 10 minutes or less, no crying (he does talk to himself though sometimes, it's so cute!!). Then again there is the odd night where he just doesn't want to go to bed (slept too much during day or routine just completely out of whack) and then I just bring him back down, let him play until he is tired and try again when he is ready. Or I'll let him sleep with me the odd time if he really doesn't want to settle and I need to sleep. Something about seeing me with my eyes closed seems to give him the hint that he should go to sleep too.

Hope this helps! I have a 12 week old boy who is normally asleep by 9pm, wakes around 2 for a feeding, wakes at 5 for a feeding and we start our day between 7-8am. That's a routine I can live with! Hope your little girl is a good sleeper as well!

Can someone help me find a Savannah Monitor?

bribri

I have been looking for a Savannah Monitor for the past week. I am looking to buy one, or two depending on the age. I also need for the place to ship to Va, or is in or near Va. I have only found one place that carries savannah's this time of year and this place is in Europe, meaning they do not ship over seas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
They usually have some babies for sale at LLL reptile.com. Very reputable company and great prices too.

Illegal aliens having babies raises taxes in Starr County, are you bothered?

Thin Ice

Check the Mcallen monitor, Starr county is considering raising the taxes to help pay for illegal aliens who show up in labor. They can't pay the bill, they don't get medicaid, so the hospital eats it. Then the taxpayers do. What are your opinions on this?

Answer
more than bothered
it's wrong all together
i can't stand the some hospitals are going bankrupt because they have to help illegals who can't pay the hospital bills,
immigration needs to stop and now
I'm all for welcoming the aliens but not when I as an American citizen have to suffer just so they can have a better life, what about my American dream
i was born here and it's sad to see the country fading loosing it's values
what happened to the middle class?
if America keeps going on like this they're no hope for our future
I'm going to Europe A.S.A.P.!

Baby Checklist?

mroof!

My husband and I have a ton of things prepared for the baby, but I can't help but feel like I'm forgetting/missing items.

What else am I missing?

Crib
Changing station
Dresser
Car seat
Stroller
Play-pen
Play-yard
Clothing
Diaper bags
Bottles
Chew toys
Stuffed animals
Blankets
Bath tub

Answer
baby monitor -- ideally one with two portable receivers, so you can keep one in your bedroom and one somewhere else in the house (and so you can carry the second one around with you depending on your needs)

diapers/wipes -- don't stock up on too many diapers in the newborn size as most babies outgrow those extremely quickly; have some on hand, and some in the next size (size 1). Even so I wouldn't stock up on too many, you may find that one brand fits your baby better depending on how she's/he's built.

baby carrier -- like the baby bjorn. This can be much more pleasant and convenient than a stroller, good for bonding, and can also be helpful at home if you want to carry your baby a lot at home, either due to parenting philosophy, colic, or whatever. (You can get a front carrier, a hip sling, etc.)

you didn't mention clothing -- onesies, socks, and *hats* -- most body heat is lost from the head...even for those of us who have hair!

bottles/formula -- many moms will disagree with me, but I'm a firm believer in having one bottle and one small can of formula on hand even if you're positive you're going to be breastfeeding. I've known just enough moms who had completely unanticipated problems to believe it's worth a few bucks to buy those items if it can even possibly prevent a new parent from freaking out because the baby is starving and won't latch and there's a freak storm preventing you from getting to the store at 4 am.... But that's me.

Swaddler or Sleep Sack -- you don't want to use blankets with little babies for safety reasons, and swaddling is shown to help with sleeping, fussiness, etc. (The best by far, I've found, is the "Miracle Blanket.")

"medical stuff" -- bulb syringe, thermometer, baby nose drops, gas drops, infant tylenol drops (you never want to give it to your newborn without your doctor telling you to, but you want to have it on hand should you need it), baby nail clipper and baby nail files, gentle baby wash for baths, vaseline (if you have a rectal thermometer, and/or to care for a circumcision site if applicable)

washcloths/towels (the hooded ones are great for babies)

gauze and alcohol, or alcohol swabs -- for the umbilical cord stump (your doctor may recommend you let it dry naturally though, so check)

diaper cream of some sort

pacifiers -- the hospital will probably give you some of the "Soothie" variety, which a lot of parents recommend anyway (and they're one piece so nothing can break off and become a choking hazard)

you listed the crib, so I'm assuming that means you also have crib mattress, mattress protector, and sheets.

not necessary immediately, but I really recommend a boppy pillow -- some women like using it to nurse, but more than that it can be a tremendous help with getting an infant to deal with tummy time!

I agree that you'll probably want a swing or bouncy seat, but you don't need it immediately. If you're registering that's a good type of item to register for. (If you buy your own: get a bouncy seat that vibrates if you get a bouncy; if you get a swing get one that can easily be changed from side/side (cradle) swinging to front/back swinging, and preferably with music options and gizmos to look at.)

That's all I can think of right now.

Congratulations, and good luck!

Best Wifi security/surveillance/baby monitor or camera?

Kara

I want a camera/monitor/webcam that can work over Wifi so I can be at work and look in at my son whenever i want on my phone or tablet pan, tilt and zoom are a plus and so would be night vision. I want to be able to hear and talk back and for it to be recordable so i can keep certain videos. has to work for 6-8hrs at a time. i want to be able to have at least 2 to connect over wifi and watch 2 different rooms, if possible, and for or less apiece for each camera i have to buy. examples are the motorola blink1, dropcam, foscam, linksys compact wireless G internet video camera, etc. I also would like there to be little lag time in the video and real time. please and thank you so much!

Answer
A P2P camera that offers night vision , two way audio and has a memory card slot to record might work for you. You can pan and tilt remotely as well plus digital zoom. They run about 100 each and you can have as many as your wireless router has channels ( usually routers have 8 channels ). They use a app and you need a scanner in your phone or tablet. Just plug it in a n scan the code on the camera with the app and you have live view.

I dont know about the lag time but I would guess that the farther away you are the more delay.

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

how much do babies cost?

Q. on average, how much do babies cost a year? keep in mind that I KNOW how to budget and would only want to spend the big bucks on day care (if i had to), diapers and doctors. Everything else would be easy. So how does someone who doesn't make THAT much $$ afford a baby?

My boyfriend makes double what i make so he makes great money and would help.

Answer
Costs of Having a Baby
And you thought the home pregnancy test was expensive! The costs of raising a baby to age 18 costs between $125,000-$250,000 and that's not including college tuition! In your baby's first year alone, you can easily spend between $9,000-$11,000 (for diapers, formula, baby furniture, clothing, baby gear, etc.)

Two things that can save you money right off is deciding to use cloth diapers, using 2nd hand items and breastfeeding.

If you go back to work right away, childcare can cost as much as $3,000-$4,500 in your baby's first year, not to mention the higher insurance premium for adding an additional person. If you can stay home with your baby, you can save money.
Pregnancy
Don't forget about the delivery! It easily costs between $5,000-$8,000 for a normal vaginal delivery, up to $12,000 for a cesarean delivery and much more if there are complications. If you are covered by insurance, it may cover most of the cost.

more on infant budgeting
If you plan to use disposable diapers, plan on spending between $1,600-$2,300 by the time your baby is potty-trained. Expect your baby to go through at least 7-8 diapers a day on average and spending $80-$130 a month on diapers alone (especially in the first few months, when changes are more frequent.) Cloth diapering can be just as expensive as disposables if you use a diaper service. If you launder them yourself, you can save money. It is estimated that cloth diapering cost approximately $800-$1,100 by the time your baby is potty-trained (without the diaper service.)

For formula (up until your baby is one-year-old), expect to spend between $1,000-$2,300- depending on whether you use powder in a can or ready-to-pour liquids. Plan on spending at least $40 a week on infant formula. You can really cut your costs dramatically by breastfeeding for a year or more

Costs of Having a Baby
This is a break-down of the average prices for baby items (not all are a necessity.)

What to get for a baby shower?

dingding

I'm going to a baby shower for a co-worker in another department. She didn't want to know the gender ahead of time, so it's gender-neutral. I heard the baby's room will be "jungle" themed, but I think she already has all of that. Just looking for some ideas of things that a 30-ish working mom would definitely appreciate (~$50 budget), even if it's basic stuff.

Is my babys heart rate to high?

Pregnant *

hi i went to the hospital because i didnt feel any movement for about 5 days and my babys heart beat was 192 beats per minute.. is that high? was your babys heart rate ever that high?
thats what i thought aswel, but the woman was soo rude and when i asked it was ok she laughed and said your only 18 weeks we wouldnt be able to do anything regardless. but your babys alive if thats what your asking
hi, ye i ordered one on the 2nd and it stil hasnt come.. bt they did say it would come bvy today but it didnt unfortunately

Answer
Hi,Im a mother of 3 and 31 weeks with No.4...While none of my babies heart beats were 'quite' that high..The average fetal heart beat is between 110 to 180 bmp (beats per minute).Therefore,192 is shall we say 'a little raised' but not dangerously so,, this can be for a vast numer of reasons and could just have been the rate at that particular time you were monitored.
You could possibly consider renting or buying a Fetal heart montior/doppler to help you deal with this worry,if just to put your mind at rest,it will give you a reading of your baby's heart rate as and when you wish and enable you to monitor this and take action if you feel necessary.
Try not to worry too much,as this will certainly not help if Mum's stressed out,Seek out and speak to all your medical staff until YOU are happy and content.
I wish you all the luck in the world to you & your unborn! xx

Heart monitor at home for babies?

berta44

I know for adults they have a ton of these workout monitors that can measure your heart rate. Is there something for babies? The stethoscope method and the stop watch are just not getting a true reading in our opinion. Open to suggestions as well. Thanks
We need to monitor my child's heartrate that is why we need it.

Answer
There are heart monitors for infants and children. Please speak to your doctor about which one is best for your baby and where you can find it at.

Good luck!

What Is a good Baby Monitor?

Pam

I've been looking on amazon for a baby monitor but it seems like all the reviews i read contradict each other. i was hoping someone could compare the experiences they had with baby monitors and talk about which brands they loved or hated

Answer
Hi Pam,

It depends on your budget and what you want from a baby monitor. Basically there are three ways of monitoring; audio, video, or movement sensing. Generally the cheaper baby monitors are just audio ones, and the more expensive options use video. For under $100, I can recommend the Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor or for a video monitor, the Levana Jena. For higher end baby monitors, the Samsung SEW-3037W and the Levana Astra are both good choices.

Home security system vs baby monitor?

rachkw81

We are having Baby #2 in a couple of months and we live in a 2-story home, with our bedroom and main living on a different floor than the children's bedrooms. I want to be able to monitor each of my children in their own rooms by seeing and hearing them at the same time. I am also interested in monitoring them in the playroom. Has anyone found that a home security camera system to be more effective or affordable than a traditional baby monitor? If so, what is it like for you and which system did you use? Geeky dweebs and nerds are especially encouraged to reply with help.

Answer
To be honest, many baby video monitors can offer what you need. You can buy the parent unit and add more cameras as you need to monitor different rooms. I would take a look at the Samsung SEW-3037W. You can view up to 4 rooms at the same time using 4 cameras, via split screen on the parent unit. The night vision quality is good, it works over a large range and you can pan, zoom and tilt with the cameras

Apple or Windows????? ?

HoboJones

Looking to outfit with one or the other.
I would be getting a tablet, a PC, and a laptop.

Either Apple iMac, iPad 2, and MacBook Air

Or a Windows 7 PC, Windows 7 Laptop, and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

We want a PC with a large screen and a good display. The laptop will be used mainly for school. The iPad will be used for fun and showing pictures to family of the new baby.

Any recommendations, warnings, experience.

Answer
Don't buy MAC's because people say "they don't get viruses derp derp."
Get the PC setup and spend just a little bit of money on antivirus software (I use AVG, never had ANY problems).
With a general Apple setup: You'll be looking at around $3000 (chances are you won't even take advantages of garageband or imovie either).
With a general PC setup: You can spend as little as around $1700 or as much as $3000 depending on the features and hardware setup.
I still think the value of Apple products go down quite a bit when you look at how much is spent on hardware and customer service.
Generally, if you don't know much about computers and are not willing to learn more, go Apple.
My $1300 Custom Pc annhilates an Imac in terms of performance, but HD video Editing and High End gaming probably isn't a priority.
So my verdict: A decent set of PC's and the tab for around $2000 total should be good. ($800 Desktop, $500(?) Tab, $500 Laptop, $200 Extra Monitor.)

Wireless internet keeps disconnecting?

James

Hi,

We've been having a problem with our wireless internet for a while now. The system runs off our main office computer via a router for the house.

When using my Macbook, i can easily connect. However, when i try to open 2 tabs or stream a Youtube video, it disconnects and says no DSL connection. I then wait 5 minutes, and i can reconnect again. The same happens when i'm using my computer and my mum is using her iPad.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? We live in a old house with pretty thick walls which i know can be a problem. However, when I'm in the next room which is separated from the office by a modern, thin wall, the problem still occurs. I rang my internet provider and they said that living in a house with thick walls is the problem, but I don't think this is quite the case.

Anyone have any recommendations? We are currently with Chess Broadband, quite a crappy company I think. Do you think the problem would be solved if we went to someone like BT?

Any info would be great. Thanks

Answer
Place your router to maximize effectiveness. Where you place your router has a lot to do with how it performs. When placing a router, consider putting it:
Near the center of the house, on a top floor. Radio waves best travel down and laterally.
Off the floor, ideally on a wall mount or high shelf.
As far as possible from your neighbor's WiFi router
Away from cordless phones and microwaves
Away from power cords, computer wires, microwaves, baby monitors, and halogen lamps

Do you believe in using electronics as baby-sitters?

iAnswer

Of course, many of you will answer "no" to this question, but realistically a large chunk of Americans do it.

Put on TV all day for toddlers.
Hand over the iPads.
Hand over the smart phones with games.

This stuff wasn't around when WE were toddlers.

In my opinion, children, young young children shouldn't be exposed to the electronics at all. But you can't hide it, so maybe monitoring the usage to a time limit a day, or a week.

What's your opinion? Are you one of those electronic babysitters?

All opinions respected!

Answer
Im in Australia and I will happily admit that my nearly 3 year old gets our Ipad and our Iphone if I need to get something done, normally maximum of 30 minutes, most definately not all day! And its a distraction/something fun for them to do while mummy is busy and cannot play with them right away.

Once my jobs are done, it's right back to playing on the swings/drawing/painting/tea party's/building cubbies etc..

do i need a router or a modem?

Msp

wireless or wired? i'm confused! ok-right now, i have wireless internet,
from comcast. the modem or router thing, i rent from them at $7 bucks,
is in my living room, and my pc is in my room, hooked up to my hdtv.
how, ever-i'm tired of paying comcast the extra $7 dollars a month!
so, i'm thinking about buying the "Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS modem".

i want to have a WIRED internet connection, and be able to share
that "wired connection" to my old '2006' pc, apple tv, wireless printer,
and an iphone 5. BTW..the pc will be DEAD soon, until, i can afford
another one! so, i'll only have the apple tv, printer and iphone, to connect.

do i need a wireless or wired modem, or wireless/wired router?
i appreciate your help. thanks.

Answer
Here is how it works,

A router connects two separate networks and manage the traffic between them.

A wireless router enables you to provide wireless (WiFi) Internet access to all of your WiFi enabled devices such as laptops, game consoles, cell phones and tablets, Streaming devices such as Roku boxes and Internet enabled TV and sound devices, etc.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

DSL and Cable modems use different technology, for this reason you can't use a cable gateway (DOCSIS) with DSL or use a DSL gateway (ADSL2+) with a cable Internet connection.

A highly rated DOCSIS 3.0 cable gateway is the Motorola SBG6580. It is currently about $120 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040IUI46/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0040IUI46

You could also buy a standalone cable modem and connect it to a separate wireless router.

If you buy an older DOCSIS 2.0 model and you are paying for a speed tier over 20 Mbps. then you will probably not see the throughput that you should.

Be sure to get a newer compatible DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem such as the Motorola SB6120. It supports bonded channels and will increase your cable Internet performance.

As far as routers go,

A fast wireless router does not make your Internet faster.

Your WAN speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second).

For example if you pay for a 10 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 10 Mbps.

No router or modem will change your 10 Mbps Internet speed.

This Internet connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router.

If you have a 10 Mbps plan and one user is utilizing 5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a HD Netflix movie that only leaves 5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

Fast routers and network devices are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP.

WIRELESS RANGE:

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range.

Many wireless connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously.

Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens..

Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

You don't have to buy your modem, router or gateway from your ISP, you can get one from a local retailer such as BestBuy or Fry's or online from places like Amazon.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 20 or more reviews with at least a 4 star rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Most cable Internet providers use the cable modem's MAC address to activate the modem.

Every device that has a network interface has a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address. This is usually expressed in hexadecimal such as 10:25:A4:59:EF:1C

You'll have to call your cable provider with the MAC of the new modem so they can activate it on your account. The MAC address is usually printed on a sticker attached to the modem.

Good Luck...

Any advice for a new laptop user?

simply_col

Hey,
I just bought my first laptop. It took me a really long time to save for it so I want to make it last as long as possible.
It's an Acer, I love it.
Anyhow, I was wondering if you could offer any advice, most of everyone I know have desktops so I really don't have anyone to ask.
My one friend said she recommends I get a cooling pad because if my labtop is sitting on my lap I could easily block the vents on the bottom and fry the things inside. If thats true, that's the kind of advice I'm looking for!

So anything advice you have would be awesome.
Also it had a nice sleek black pannel on the outside but the only problem is it shows finger prints like no other...Is there anything I should not clean it with?
How often should I clean the keyboard and with what?

Thanks!

Answer
general computer use policies:

1. do not, do not, do not, eat/drink around it if you are clumsy. or if you think you may become clumsy around laptops. you would laugh if i told you how many people come to me with "i spilled mountain dew on my keyboard, what now?" type of situation.
with pc's, that's easy. buy a new keyboard. with laptops, that's usually "buy a new laptop".

2. don't do anything you wouldn't do to a baby. i.e., don't leave it upside down, don't leave it in extreme conditions (e.g. on the floor on front of the heat, or on the window sill), don't let it sit in filth (laptops have holes in the bottom, dust likes holes, laptop hardware doesn't like dust), etc.

3. don't leave it on carpets, speakers, etc. all you need is the smallest spark of static for something to shortcircuit on the motherboard and everything to go to hell.

4. don't power it up and down constantly. that goes for desktops just as much as laptops. if you need it to be on and off (you travel during the day), hibernate or standby it. don't shut down entirely 60 times a day. computers are not built for that.

5. this sounds stupid, i know, but, don't shake it under the pretence of "getting the dust out of the keyboard". just, don't. anything with water is also in this category.

6. don't clean it with *anything* other than special liquid and cloth that you buy in best buy/circuit city. grab one of the working nerds and ask them for monitor cleaning liquid. it's around $10 and it will clean anything that's sensitive. including back panels.

7. always be aware that there is a lot of things working in the background while you're just surfing the net. things get hot. one alternative is getting a cooling pad (watch the sizes, let me know if you find one for 17"), but what you should always be careful about - vent openings. be careful so nothing is obstructing them for a long period of time.

8. don't be internet-stupid. internet-stupid = downloading anything and everything, watching porn on suspicious sites, believing that you *will* win that iphone if you click on the commercial, etc. again, you would not believe how many people go for that.

9. clean the junk regularly, schedule virus/spyware scans (schedule it for 4am, if you don't want it to intrude on your working time), defrag the disc, clean the registry, and do it all on regular basis.

the baby will be thankful and will serve you many years to come :)

just use common sense.

Mommys on the go - monitors?

Amber

Does anyone know of a monitor I can leave with a baby sitter and see it on my phone ? Is there such thing. !?

Answer
There are many Internet cameras but you need to have a connection to the Internet, most likely broadband (cable, DSL phone line, satellite) Internet Service Provider (ISP).

There are iPhone or Android phone apps that can be run to take periodic pictures and send them automatically to your smart phone by email or other means. I am not a smart phone user but I am sure you can search for those. http://www.pcworld.com/article/242576/how_to_use_your_ios_or_android_smartphone_or_tablet_as_a_wireless_network_camera.html

ideas for the iphone, opinions?

damos92

hi what do you think of these 2 ideas for apps on the iphone. one is a thing where it monitors a baby crying and then you input what that cry was about. for instance, your baby is crying one day and you figure out he wants food. you record the cry and say that is a food cry. then in the future you just show your iphone near a baby crying and it will tell you what they are crying for by measuring his or hers pitch and tone. another one is a shock thing, like in the arcade. you hold the iphone and get shock waves through your hand for however long, and send your high scores online and the person who gets the longest time holding it gets a prize or something. what do you think? also do you have any cool app ideas?

Answer
Awesome, in-fact I can also record sounds on my Nokia, or Motorola, or Samsung, or Sony Ericsson and also make them vibrate.
Wow I think I got a cool phone! Not?

A NEW BETTER CAMERA APPLICATION FOR THAT TRASH PHONE CAN BE A BETTER START!

baby monitors for 2 different rooms?

serenityw2

I'm having a baby in Feb and my son will be just over 2. I like using a monitor with him still so that I can be outside and not have to pop my head in at night or during naps to make sure he's ok. But how can I do this with 2 kids in 2 different rooms? The only multi-room monitor I've found is by graco, and the reviews aren't very good for it. Not good enough to spend $130 on it. But I can't put 1 kind in 1 room and 1 in another because they'll just go to static. Anyone else find a way around this problem?

Answer
I have a video monitor by Summer. My sister in law has the same one. When she comes to vist she brings the camera part and we can watch both on the monitor by switching from A to B. You would need one monitor and two cameras. They are expensive though, I think like $150.00.

how do you clean flat-screened computer monitors?

carlyy. :]

what should i use.. ? my monitor has smudges all over it.. and it drives me CRAZY!

Answer
So how do you clean an LCD monitor screen without buying any of those expensive LCD Monitor Cleaner solutions or Monitor Wipes available in the market ? We look at some proper methods and precautions before you clean the monitor [should apply to HDTVs, projection TVs and Plasma TVs as well]

Think of LCD Displays just like the soft and delicate skin of your newborn baby - Be very gentle and never put even the slightest pressure on the computer screen with your hand.

Second, you need to find a piece of soft cloth - old cotton handkerchiefs lying in your mom's wardrobe should be fine but don't try tissue papers, toilet rolls or even shower towels as the fabric will scratch your screen permanently [like sandpaper or utensil scrubbers]

Either turn the monitor off or set the background to black and hide all the desktop icons and minimize the open windows. This will easily help you identify the dirty areas of the monitor.

To prepare the solution for cleaning LCD monitors, you will need deionized or distilled water and vinegar or iso-propyl alcohol - Don't use tap water or mineral water as they could leave white marks on the screen because of the dissolved salts.

Dilute the vinegar or IPA with distilled water [1:1] and spray this liquid on the cloth. Never ever spray liquid directly onto the LCD screen. Moisten the cloth with this home made LCD cleaner and gently move the wet cloth in just one direction - from top to bottom.

Word of Caution: Be sure that the LCD screen is dry before closing it or using the computer. Do not use any solutions that contain Acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride. Never touch the LCD screen with your fingers as this can cause the pixels to burn out. http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/11/wipe-clean-lcd-screen-laptop-monitor.html

My daughter drew some marks with crayon on our computer screen. What is the safest way to remove the crayon marks, without damaging the screen. Thanks.

Savannah monitor questions?

Dark Ryok

Ok, Ive been looking at these guys for a while. My local shop just got in two savannahs and a nile monitor. Ive already done quite a bit of research on both of them, and I believe the savannah is more my style. Im not sure if Im going to by just one, or both of them. Im going to start them in a 55 gallon. But I have the room to build a large fenced off area in my room for them.

But the main question is... To those who have savannahs, how do you like them? How do they interact between them and you?
Thanks. I wasnt sure if they were social guys or not. The research Ive done was a few weeks ago when I first thought about it. The niles looked nice, but I had already heard how mean they can get, so I already crossed them off the list.
Im used to fish. I do my research with them. Most fish I can do adequate research in about a weeks time because most fish are about the same care wise. Ive had experience with reptiles before. I had a leopard gecko and fat-tailed gecko for 6-7 years. I owned a snake for about 8 months before my dad decided he didnt want me keeping it, so I gave him to a cousin that still has him. Im not a novice in the hobby, but I still have a ways to go. I understand I need to do more research. Im just tossing the idea around and seeing what peoples opinions are on them first. Ive heard good things from a few friends at the pet store about them. And a few other friends have been around them and have nothing bad to say. If my mind is made up on getting one, Ill do my research then. I researched stuff about them quite a bit a few weeks back, but ended up getting a few more fish tanks and delayed the savannah.
With owning 7 fish tanks ranging from 20-90 gallons, I want something I can mess with. And I dont want anything common. Savannahs caught my eye months back in a Petco. Then a local store got several shipments of them in, and these guys were about 8 inches long. Thats when I started getting interested again. If The savannah falls through , Ill start a sugar gilder colony. lmao.
Seriously. I was asking about their temperament and behavior. Not care. I wanted to know how they acted. Thank you for providing me with information that I dont care about.

Answer
Well, I got my first baby savannah monitor from kingsnake.com.
I paid 60$ shipped. I do not regret paying so much money. It is a lot better to get them when they are younger, so you can control their temperment. I love my baby sav, his name is little. I got him when he was 6 inches, and now is about 14 inches. But he is growing. Savannah monitors generally have good temperments. They grow to be about 3-5 feet. They are very good monitors for starters though. You do not want to get a nile monitor, they are aggressive. And, most people cannot tame them. And not for everyone. My old nile gave pretty nasty bites for such a young monitor. When I first got my savannah, he was timid around me, and did not trust me. So, therefore, he was a biter. But after a few weeks of handling him, he turned right around! Now, out of my monitors, he is my favorite! I trust this little guy. He is has a light blue to his coloring, and has very pretty circles. I let him run around my room. I keep him in a 100 gallon tank. You want to use UTH'S (under tank heaters), never heat rocks. They can do major damage to your monitors belly. You NEVER want to buy a nile, and a savannah, and put them in the same cage together. They will fight to death. You should get the savannah. If you deciede to get two, put them in SEPERATE cages. Never the same. Feeding will get quiet expensive though. For 3 fuzzies that I feed my baby, is 7$ a bag. Which is pretty pricy.

Well I hope this info helped. But remember, think twice before getting a nile.

Look I am done VARANID. you are not worth fighting with. I have other things to do, rather than waste my time.

Baby Savannah Monitor Help?

Jennifer S

I have a baby savannah monitor, and I do not know what gender it is. Its name is Ghidra and I think its about 2-3 months old maybe. I measured him in at 10 inches long yesterday. I feed him about 2-3 times a day large adult crickets. Its not interested in waxworms or mealworms, but it sure eats like a porker. About 5-6 crickets are consumed per feeding, and I feed him everyday. It lets me pick it up and pet it rather easily with no biting or violent behavior. Its been almost a week since I got it, I dont think it was that big when I bought it. I dont handfeed it but I allow it to "see" me drop its food into its tank. Its currently in a 55 gal tank with paper towel bedding, large branches to climb on, and kept at 90-95 degrees during the day 80 at night. This is the first monitor I have ever had and I want to make sure I am taking good care of it. Seems to be thriving, havent had any problems or signs of stress or illness. I have experience in reptiles for about 10 years caring for tropical and desert species. This is my first monitor and I want to make sure I am on the right track.

Please do not respond with a link as an answer, I am looking for an answer from an experienced monitor reptile owner not some person looking for some points. Thank you.

Answer
You're asking for a lot of info with out a link. I could give it a try. But, where to start? Aquarium? Loose it your Savannah monitor will out grow that in one year. Aquariums are almost impossible to keep humidity and temps correct. You would be better off to keep it in a 2ftx4ftx2ft plywood enclosure. You might wan to think about starting on your finished enclosure. Your full grown Savannah monitor will require an enclosure 4ftx8ftx4ft. With at least 19-24 inches of diggable substrate. Savannah monitors are deep burrowers and will use it all. If you insist on keeping him in the aquarium til you build an adequate enclosure. Here are a few tips. cover the top of your aquarium with plywood. Cut a hole in it for your basking light. Keep your aquarium at least 3 feet off the ground. This should help keep humidity up. Loose the paper towel "substrate". Keeping your monitor on paper towel or newspaper will cause serious health problems. Put a 50/50 mix of sand and soil in there. Something that holds moisture and creates a good dig able substrate. Moist not wet. When you compress the soil and release it, it should hold its shape. As far as temps. It will be hard to keep a hot and cool side. Make sure your monitor has plenty of hides. something it can wedge itself underneath and feel safe. Basking temp should be between 120f-140f. Hot side 90f-99f. cool side 80f-90f. One other note. Quit handling it. You're only going to stress it out. Force handling and "taming" will cause one of two outcomes. An overly aggressive monitor or a lethargic one that has given up. Monitors don't like to be handled. "Taming" will only break their spirit. When picked up, a healthy monitor should thrash, tail whip and scratch, to try and escape. Human interaction should only be on their terms. Allow them to come to you. Given time and proper trust building. You can achieve a state of tolerance. Make no assumption s they will never be "tame". And, if you want something you can pet and hold you should get rid of it and buy a puppy. I might also suggest you join a monitor forum. There is a lot of bogus info out there on keeping monitors. A forum can provide you with some experienced handlers that can give you good advice. If you want to do some more research. Or cross reference any of the info I provided. I will supply a link. http://savannahmonitor.org/ Read it or not. Many experienced handlers recommend it.
