Baby Registry Help PLEASE?

Torie

I am starting my registry for my first baby and I have registered at Target and Babies R Us and I have a few questions. First, should I put the same items on both registries? Next, I am having a rather large baby shower (50 guests) because we both have large families so I want to put enough items on my list but I'm not sure if I should ask for things that baby will need months after she is born like a potty chair, teethers, stuffed animals, etc. I feel like I should just register for the really important stuff that I will need for when the baby first comes home and I can slowly buy that kind of stuff later down the line as I need it. I'm going off the check list babies r us gave, but I am only like half way done and already have like 70 things on my list! Also, I heard that a lot of people don't even buy things off your registry and just buy whatever they feel you need, and in that case I don't know why I'm wasting my time doing research trying to find out what is the best, trying to get things that will match the nursery, and how much of what I need if they aren't even gonna look at it! Sorry if I seem edgy I have just been working on this for a few days now off and on and I'm getting very frustrated.

Answer
First of do you know what you are having?
If you don't then make a long list of neutral baby clothes for the summer that's coming up. Also make sure you ask for doubles or more of everything, and get many of clothing items in larger sizes. Make sure just in case to get a few Preemie baby clothes just in case.

Also I would also like to recommend both http://www.diapers.com/ , and http://www.babyearth.com/ . For registry. I don't like the Target selection, and what ever these sites don't have Babies R Us might have extras or back ups.

Also here is a list I came up with, with a few helpful item idea's.

What are your opinions on home births, midwifery, unassisted births?

Kort

I know it's quite a controversial topic, wondering what people think of it ?

Answer
Home births are only controversial when speaking with someone who is either fearful, uninformed, or believes the media in the US about birth being not safe and all that jazz.

There are two types of midwives, one a CNM certified nurse midwife who delivers the babies predominately in the hospital and is often subject to hospital protocols. And the other a Home birth midwife. There are a variety of labels for these home birth midwives depending their training and which exams they've taken (or not taken).

Unassisted births, well, make sure you do your research on this one. It is something that you might consider hiring a midwife for your prenatal care, so that you know you are in an appropriate condition to safely consider unassisted (with a back up midwife if you end up wanting her).

Allow me to elaborate a little on home births and midwifery, as I am a doula, a childbirth educator, and in the middle of my third year in home birth midwifery education/training.

A home birth midwife, before agreeing to work with you, will go over your health history and take note of any risk factors that would indicate you are or aren't a candidate for home birth. Once you and she have agreed to work with each other, she will provide prenatal care, just as a doctor would (depending on the state and the licensing in that state). In many states where midwifery is legal, midwives have lab privileges. That means that there will still be blood draws, blood pressures taken, heart beats listened to and so on.

A home birth midwife is far more likely to prevent complications of pregnancy because they don't have the hospital equipment for emergency types of things. They are more educated on the effects of nutrition on pregnancy. Not just the eat right for your baby, but the details of how eating appropriately prevents a wide variety of complications for both you and your baby.

Of course every midwife has her own special touch and uniqueness. Prior to any procedure, you will be given full information so that you are making choices, not being told to do this or that, but rather, this or that is an option and here are the pros and cons of both this and that.

At a birth, again, the methods vary. A big difference is that this midwife has been your care provider your entire pregnancy. She knows already what is normal for you and can easily recognize the not normal and by doing so, better keep both you and your baby safe.

The US has this idea that births are not safe and need to be medicalized for our protection. 95% of births in the US occur in the hospital. You'd think that with all this fancy equipment and constant monitoring that we would have an amazing ranking internationally for super birth outcomes... but we don't. I believe it is the WHO that has gathered all the birth statistics from a majority of the worlds countries. We are ranked somewhere in the mid thirties (number one being best) out of all the other nations, in the infant mortality outcomes! What are the 30some other developed and not so developed countries doing differently and better than us when it comes to labor and birth?... Midwives!

Only 5% of births in the US are home births. In a surprising number of states, it is still not legal. It is actually quite concerning that the US would prevent women from having a safer option other than hospital births.

If you would like to, you can check out my blog, that is mainly based on pregnancy and birth topics. It is www dot Mother Birth Speaks dot com.

Do you have a TTC success story to share with me?

nadia

DH and I have been TTC for the past 11 cycles now. I'm currently on CD 7, waiting to O. Anyway, I have been feeling pretty low lately. I was wondering if there are women out there with TTC success stories/blogs/journals online to share with me. I don't want to quit, but need lots of inspiration to continue on this journey.

It would mean so much to me. Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hi Nadia ... yeah, similar story. I'm now a year into charting and last month was the worst - really sad, depressed about it all, as I have 3 pregnant friends right now, and it was so easy for them. So, I sent a teary e-mail to my friend because I remember her trying for 2 years. She told me that the first month they used a fertility monitor, they got pregnant! I'm going to try that this month for the first time -- hey we all need to keep our hopes up, eh?! Maybe think about using OPKs which are pretty cheap online (around $0.85 each test if you buy 30). I'm on day 4 waiting to ovulate, so let's keep each other posted as we go through this one! Best of luck : and baby dust *~*~*~*~*~*

Can your neighbors listen in on your phone conversations with a baby monitor ?

best baby monitor range on Philips Avent Basic Baby Monitor with DECT Technology
best baby monitor range image

Lady

If you're on your cordless phone in your home? I've heard that its possible for neighbors with baby monitors to do this to their neighbors, and I wouldn't think this would work, unless my cordless phone acts as a monitor.

Answer
It's possible if the phone and the monitors work in the same broadcast frequency.

Most do not, however. Modern cordless phones operate in the 2.4ghz wavelength, and older ones operate in the 900mhz wavelength (the newest ones operate in the 5.2ghz wavelength, but don't worry about those).

Most baby monitors work in the 300-900mhz wavelength, so a few of them *can* pick up on older cordless phones, but those that do are few and far between... especially becase every phone and monitor is coded to only pick up a very specific frequency around their specified range... so crosstalk is less likely.

What is the best 2 room video baby monitor?

Kristin

I would like to get a baby video monitor but I want it in both kids rooms with only one monitor screen. What is the best one on the market for the cheapest price. Or...is there a video system out that has only one camera that I can order a 2nd camera separate for?

Answer
Hi

Like any other products, baby monitors need to suit your lifestyle and satisfy your requirements, even to the slightest of details. So before you purchase one, try to dwell on a number of factors first. These things will not only serve as your guide, they will also help you pick out the best type or brand for your little one.

Some of the things you need to consider are:

Range
Portability
Levels of Interference
Video Monitoring Options

There are more details at the link in the source box about the Best Baby Monitors and I hope they help

Take care

baby monitor repair image

Lauren

I found out on Wednesday that I am 1 cm dilated. I have been having soft stool, flu like symptoms, and nausea. Also, I have lost my mucus plug but not sure if my water has broke yet. I have not had a gush as if water has broken, but I have constant feeling I have to pee and when I do its clear and odorless so I am not sure if I have a slow leak ?

Answer
you should go to the doctor. If your waters did have a slow leak then that will need to be checked. They might put you on bedrest and monitor it to see if it repairs itself, but if it doesn't and your waters are indeed leaking, they'll need to induce you. Don't stress, but don't ignore it. It's one of those things where if you go to the hospital then everything will be OK, but if you don't it's a gamble, and by the sounds of it, your waters really could have broken.

What to do if your small penis causes you to have depression and anxiety?

Josey W

Because my depression and anxiety is putting me up to suicide.
And my short height does not help at all! I wonder how many men commit suicide due to this?

Answer
Tips to increase penis size and other masculine features:
You should do the following from the ages of 14 to 21.

1.Stay lean, thin and muscular with exercise such as running and weights. The easiest way to get in shape is to get up early and go for a 30 minute run each morning. Or in the evening. Make sure to have a cold shower after though to get rid of the excess heat otherwise you will be a bit flustered after. Cold showers also prevent night time ejaculation.
2.Eat and drink well. Cut out artificial sugary drinks.
3.Don't masturbate too much, and when you do, don't damage penis by applying too much pressure

Exercise increases testosterone, the male hormone. Weights are especially good for this.
Being thin means less cholesterol (the fatty stuff that clogs blood vessels), consequently testosterone is more effective.
Being thin also means there is more blood flow to the penis; so when you get spontaneous erections it stretches out the 3 spongy chambers of the penis. See diagram: http://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/265769o
Don't masturbate too much as this depletes energy and effects hormone levels.
The penis was not designed for the strong pressure of the hand. Over-masturbation is likely to damage the delicate spongy chambers of the penis, especially if you apply a lot of pressure with your hand. This leads to energy being diverted into repairing the penis rather than growth.
I would avoid spending time on the computer as this resists the temptation to look at porn and masturbate. Also the electro-magnetic radiation from the monitor is not good for you if your head/brain is too close to it. It can also hinder masculine development of the face leading to a baby face.
You should be getting spontaneous erections. Erections are good for expanding out the penis with blood. This happens a lot during sleep. The herb Ginkgo baloba has also been proven to increase blood flow and open up blood vessels. You can buy them in tablet form (just do a google search).
So be as thin and muscular as possible. And don't apply too much pressure in masturbating - and don't masturbate excessively.
Other masculine traits will result from this too: deep voice, angular jaw, pronounced forehead and big space between eyes.

What is the best hidden camera I can use to catch my cheating husband?

Dorothy

I want one that either records for at least 6-7 hours or one where I can watch from home. I plan to set it up in his office at work.

Answer
i think if a woman suspects her husband is cheating and whom is prepared to go to this length to catch him out, in her heart of hearts she knows the truth already and just needs it confirming. Ive been there and done that myself. Except i didnt have to put cameras in. I hid the baby monitor behind the couch and listened from upstairs when he was talking on the phone. The other thing is, i registered his mobile phone online with his network provider and had the code sent to our home address. With this i was able to view the whole of his mobile phone bill and all the texts that he had sent and at what time he had sent them. I was still not satisfied, even though i had the prove, so i found a way to get into his emails. And there it was black in white of not just one woman he was cheating with , but 4 of them.
He STILL denied it. But after finding sperm in his boxer shorts and other things, i said enough is enough and packed his bags and chucked him out.

Best thing i ever did.

How to extend the range of a video baby monitor?

rich1000

Does anyone know how to extend the range of a video baby monitor? Our monitor is 900mhz. We live in an old building full of steel and concrete so the signal doesn't go well between rooms and is lost entirely between the baby room and the master bedroom. There are boosters for wifi networks so I would assume there is some technology or the same one that would work for baby monitors.

Answer
Take a power booster and uplink the connection to the communication antenna but dont forget to bypass the firewall and that should work.

Can anyone recommend a digital video baby monitor that can be linked to the internet?

Answer
Best guess would be drivers for the WiFi interface. Try updating the drivers.

That being said,

Although WiFi connections are convenient for mobility and ease of installation, wireless interference can cause it's connection speed and quality to vary wildly.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies, the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WiFi connection between your device and the wireless router may start at 300 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

The WLAN connection speed is only between the device and the router, you are still limited by your WAN Internet speed provided by your ISP.

Often signal strength (bars) displayed by your device can be misleading, WiFi interference can cause havoc with consistent speed

Even more important than download speed for online gaming applications is the increased latency experienced by a wireless connection.

Latency is the delay (ping time) in milliseconds that it takes the signal to travel to the server and back. The lower the number the better, but you'll definitely want a ping time of under 120 ms or you'll have major problems. Ideally you want less than 80 ms ping to the gaming server.

Your latency (ping) may be 30 ms and wireless interference could cause it to spike to 300 ms or more. In short, wireless connections suck for online gaming.

For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Try a speed test http://speedtest.net from a laptop or PC directly connected to the router via a Ethernet cable to see how much speed and latency you are giving up for the convenience of a wireless connection.

If it is not feasible to run Ethernet cable the next best option would be a set of powerline network adapters http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

You plug one in by your router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference. There is still some extra overhead in the connection but it is much more stable than WiFi.

For stationary devices I always recommend Ethernet connections, however I realize that this is impractical for devices such as tablets, iPods, cell phones, etc.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

You could also try adjusting the position of the router or relocating your device closer to the wireless router to obtain a stronger signal.

If you still have a weak wireless signal you can get a wireless range extender or a wireless adapter with better range for your WiFi device.

Wireless adapters come in many types and sizes, you may want a high power USB model with external antennas. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=high%20power%20wireless%20adapter&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374458138&rh=n%3A13983791%2Ck%3Ahigh%20power%20wireless%20adapter%2Cp_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2941120011&tag=excharge-20

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats or regenerates them to extend the signal range to greater distances.

Here are the two most popular highly rated models on Amazon.

Built new desktop, need wireless?

Tigger

Hi guys. I built a new desktop, and now I need internet. I can't use wired connection for reasons. Right now I'm using a TEW-645UB Trendnet adapter. It works but it only picks up a few bars, and it's laggy in game. I'm using my desktop for gaming.
Is there a better adapter out there?

Answer
That Trednet model is a decent High Power Wireless N Adapter with full backwards support for IEEE 802.11b/g, and support for latest IEEE 802.11n Draft standard. It is likely that the position of the router is causing thee problem.

I would certainly try and improve things by repositioning the router [I have suggested several things below] before rushing out to buy a new adapter that may or may not improve your signal.

It would obviously have helped if you had given details on the make and model of the router and whether it supports draft n wifi standard and if it has "Dual Band" support for broadcasting simultaneously on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands.

There are several things you can do do try and boost signal strength; To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high as possible and there are as few walls as possible between it and the PC.

Things you can do to improve signal strength

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/chaâ¦

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will also show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_neâ¦

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wâ¦
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can also interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your PC

Is it illegal to record a conversation without the other person knowing?

baby monitor eavesdropping image

Amess

Answer
It depends on the circumstances. It also depends on the specific laws of the State or country you record someone in. To provide a better answer more information would be needed. In general though it could be considered eavesdropping electronically which is a crime in many places.

Added: By circumstances I mean when, where and so on. A person may have a recording device in their own home that they placed there and they are probably not obligated to warn all guests that they have it such as a baby monitor or security camera. On the other hand planting a device in some other persons home without their knowledge or a warrant is definitely illegal.

Should I tell my new neigbors that our baby moniters pick up each other's frequencies?

--

So, my new neighbors have the same baby moniter as us. If we are on the same channel, they interfere. They clearly do not know yet. I am nervous that if they know, that they will start eavesdropping. Should I tell them or let them figure it out on their own?
I doubt they know yet. They moved in yesterday, The reason we found out is because ours got static-y at 9pm last night. We switched frequencies and it was fine. So, this morning, a received was on in my basement set to the other frequensy. I freaked because I coudl hear a conversation in my basement. It was them through the moniter. They definitely don't know yet.
Trust me guys, they DO NOT know about it. I am positive.

Answer
I think both parties should respect the others' privacy, and use different channels, or otherwise different monitors. I would advise you tell them to avoid any kind of possible conflict between you both.

what should I write about in my research paper?

Taylor C

I have chosen the question : are we too dependent on life simplifying devices? Im not looking for someone to write my paper just I want to know if anyone has any Idea about some things that I should touch on in my paper

thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Taylor,

Yes, I believe we are (too) dependent on life simplifying devices. I've bracketed the word 'too' because I believe there are some devices that add to daily life stresses and yet have a place in our life style.

Take Communications:
I guess the ability to be able to communicate with and actually see the person you are communicating with (Skype) is really a marvelous experience. (My daughter lives in Dublin Ireland and I live in Perth Western Australia, so we connect frequently using Skype).

If we look at 'e-mail', it can be seen as a 'blessing or curse'. A blessing for the speed of sending messages and receiving replies'. A curse for people who work, because in today's business climate where time = profit, many senders expect a prompt reply and this increases the stress and work-load of the recipient.

Home Appliances:
Again, the speed of preparing meals, boiling water, cooking and cleaning all are made possible through the use of modern devices.

The drudgery of laundry compared to a time before the development of 'washing machines' is a boon to those who have to do the laundry.

Devices that help to monitor that a baby is sleeping safely, that help people with 'sleep apnea disorders' offer an early warning in the event of something going wrong.

Similarily, devices that provide an 'early warning' system for the elderly who live alone or who are impaired in some way, provide a measure of early warning and not least, comfort for their families.

In the home: Smoke detectors are essential safety protectors.

Hope this helps.

I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment with 2 other guys (bunk beds and floor matress rotation) Were all pretty mental, so there are conflicts from time to time. All of us are unemployed and unemployable, so were stuck together in this apartment all day every day.

41 year old Roommate a is an all day alcoholic and has severe anxiety and bipolar disorder. He has several seizures a day, which can get annoying if youre trying to watch tv or something. He performs his own blood tests or something, he will fill a vial with his own blood, tie string to the vial, then spin it around in the air, then he examines it under a microscope. He does this every day, I really have no idea what hes looking for or even if he really has any idea what hes doing. Im not even sure its safe to take blood as often ad he does, although he takes small amounts. He has all sorts of other medical equipment, blood pressure monitor, oxygen monitor, 3 stethoscopes, glucose monitor, even his own holter monitor, which he wears all day, covered in electrodes. other than the seizures, hes totally healthy too, watching his body work is just like a hobby to him. Hes divorced and horribly insecure and needy. He gets verbally abusive when hes drunk.

20 year old roommate b, he is a space cadet. He makes tons of mess which he refuses to clean and showers once a week. He can be rude and selfish, and will basically ignore you all day. He has a 3 year old daughter that stays here on weekends who he pays no attention to. Hes really aloof and kind of a loser to be honest. He reminds me a bit of dylan, brians son in that episode of family guy. He has occasional anger outbursts but just keeps to himself most of the day refusing to talk to anyone. He also grows weed in the bathroom, which both me and the other roommate are okay with, but it might be a legal issue if he gets busted.

T be honest i have some significant mental health issues and drug habits that probably dont make me any easier to live with than these guys. Im also a bit of a hoarder, so our small space is pretty cluttered. We live together because no one else will tolerate us and we cant afford to live alone. All of us are unemployed and unemployable, so were stuck together in a small apartment 24/7, and we all really resent each other, there is alot of drama and conflict between all of us. B's daughter is a little neglected when she comes over because everyone is either high or going mental, but we all pick up slack to make sure shes fed and stuff. Also, the apartment has virtually no furniture other than the bunk beds in the bedroom, so everything is kind of on the floor.

So uum, rant over i guess. Do you have any advice?

Answer
You should get help for yourself through Social Services who can provide mental health care, physical health care and get you on the road to some kind of government assistance and housing. You really should do something about your roommate's daughter who is in danger when she comes to your apartment. Please let the Department of Children and Families know about her father and that he has her on weekends so that she can be protected. Please look into these government agencies so that you and the child can be better cared for. Good luck.

What is your opinion as a nurse on your profession?

o

I'm a high school senior and I'm trying to decide what I'd like to do. I'm really between early childhood education and nursing at the moment. If I were to pursue nursing, I'd more than likely specialize in labor and delivery.

I'm a very social person. I love people and I love kids. I also love the medical field and pregnancy/delivery. I would love to work as a nurse, but have heard both good things and bad things about being one. I'd love to hear from those of you who ARE nurses what it's like. (Hours you work, schedule flexibility, etc).

Answer
Someone else asked this today and I'm sorry but I am just going to cut and paste my previous answer because it generally fits what you're asking. . .
There are a lot of students who have dreams of going into OB, and depending on where you live/work and who you know, it might take a long time before you get in because those jobs typically are so in demand.

I just want to give you a realistic view of what it's like working in OB, because you don't really get to choose to work with ONLY newborn babies. When you work in OB as an RN, you have about 2 choices: working labor & delivery, or working in postpartum (aka 'maternal newborn'). In L&D you don't do much with the babies because they have not arrived yet. Your focus is getting the mom through labor, and monitoring the fetal heart tracing and contractions on the monitor to make sure baby is not going into distress. Once baby arrives, you do the initial cares like stabilize the baby (make sure it's breathing without difficulty), take measurements, give Vitamin K shot, eye ointment to prevent infection, and then you hand baby back to mom and help her breastfeed. Then they move out to postpartum. On the postpartum unit, 'rooming in' is encouraged so that the parents aren't dumping their babies in the nursery. There is rarely a designated 'nursery nurse' anymore under this model of care, but if there is, it's one of the postpartum nurses who is assigned to work the nursery for that one shift, it's not their permanent job (at most facilities, this might not always be true). On the postpartum unit, you are doing a lot of parent education. You help with breastfeeding problems. You take a lot of vital signs and give mothers pain meds. You aren't doing much with the babies at all. You don't get to hold, cuddle, and play with the newborns. There is no time for that, and you want to encourage parents to care for their own babies.

It's a lot of work. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, and even in 'normal, low risk' pregnancies things turn for the worse and babies can be damaged or die. Mothers can have complex health conditions which are life-threatening during pregnancy and labor. It's frustrating sending babies home with mothers who have severe mental illness or drug addictions or are living in abusive relationships or homeless and living in a shelter. As a nurse in general (not unique to OB), you feel like you're always busy and don't have enough time to spend with your patients to give them the support they need as new parents.

I do still love my job, but it is not without it's frustrations. I think that personally I have grown in the spiritual sense, and that even with those really bad situations I can find things that make me proud of the work I have done. There is something really powerful about helping a family through labor when they know they will deliver a stillborn baby, or a baby that is known to have major issues which will certainly result in death shortly after birth. The support we give as nurses is what often holds these families together during this horribly stressful time that was supposed to be full of jo

I was just wondering, what is better a black throat monitor or a white throat? I am going to the reptile expo and their should be tons of baby monitors for sale, what would be better? I already have a savannah that is the weirdest thing, I bought a nile, and they have been living together for the past 2 years. But anyway, what would be better with temperment?

Answer
ridge tailed monitors (ackies) are the best choice for a first time varanid or tegu type "pet" hands down, nothing is as friendly or inquisitive as an ackie in the whole monitor, tegu world. no discussion on this one. forget the savannah or black/white throat you need to have some monitor/tegu keeping years under your belt before you get one of these. you will fail and they will die or be you will be overwhelmed by their care and cost , probably both. here is a link to all you you need to know to get started with ackies http://www.proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#14
as far as tegus go all are fairly easy to keep its just size and temperaments that differ ( they all get big just some bigger ); blue tegus are the smallest, have nice temperament, and can subside on an all rodent diet. argentine black and whites (aka. the chacoan or giant tegu) are the most recommended species for the beginner do to there excellent temperaments and their very, forgiving of keeper mistakes. they are also one of the largest tegu species some individuals will take some fruit as well as rodents some not . the red tegu is also one of the largest along with the argentin black and white. it also shares the same excellent temperament as the arentine black and white but it is not very forgiving of mistakes in their care at all. colombian black and white tegus(common tegu) is the least recommended they are just as easy to keep as most of the other tegus ,its their temperament that are shitty. they are down right mean! here is a link to one of the most respected tegu breeder in the world bert langerwerf at http://www.agamainternational.com/

p.s. savs. and tegus need a minimum cage size of 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet deep, a black throat monitor minimum cage size of 12 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet. those are some big cages! and feeding is EXPENSIVE . an breeding trio of ackies on the other hand needs a minimum cage size of 4 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep ,that is a MUCH more easy to provide cage size then the others and the feeding isnt a fraction of the cost..which one is going to be cared for properly by a monitor / tegu newbie? these animals are a whole different ball game than any other herp. besides the size thing get old fast when it comes to monitors. . go ackie!

p.p.s. i guess i didnt read the whole question cause i just noticed the sav. & nile thing. monitors ARE social animals( frank retes at the goanna ranch proved this fact) but only in same species/breeding settings ( for the most part ). i agree with william w maybe you should reconsider keeping monitors

p.p.p.s.to lizard momma. quince monitors are hot looking monitors right? dont hear about people keeping them very often . i had a pair years ago i picked up from switzer reptiles. never any good eggs from them just duds. loved looking at them though, just couldnt stand their temperaments (can you say scratch and spray). even the few C.B.B. ones ive seen have had shitty attitudes.

How to make old iphone 3g as Home Spy Camera?

Trueme

I have two iPhones, the old iPhone 3g and the new iPhone 4s. now i wanted to use my old iphone 3g (iOs version updated) as a Home Spy Camera and wanted to watch my kids at home live stream to my new iPhone 4s while im at work. i also got my Home Wifi network. is there any best iphone application out there for this matter? or is it possible to use my Home IP address to use and access it for this concept?

Answer
There are many training videos telling us how to make iphone as home spy camera on line.
Um...I've found two:
1. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-iphone-as-spy-camera-423938/
2. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-make-iphone-secret-spy-camera-423940/
The second video looks like very easy to access, but I don't know if it is useful for you.

If these two ways are not fit, I suggest you to buy a Baby Monitor or Home Spy Camera. You can visit this online store:
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-Baby-Monitor_120.html
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-IP-Camera_113.html
It's a wholesaler, so its price is very low.

Best way to track my fitness with iPhone apps?

philscalis

I have a degree in exercise science and am going to school for physical therapy now and really want to track my fitness now that I have an iPhone and I know the importance of health. However, after researching apps I'm not sure the best app or app combination to use. I want to get a heart rate monitor (wahoo or polar?) and many of the apps will sync with it. I want to track calories, GPS run mapping capabilities, nutritious intake, and I want to track my strength training regimen (sets, reps, etc). The my fitness pal app seems to do some of these things and you can also tie in other apps or sync them with it. However there are so many other ones and I want to know the best way to do this if anyone can help. So far I have downloaded: my fitness pal, endomondo, fitocracy, sportstracker, runkeeper, real intelligence fitness app, and digifit icardio. If someone can help me out it would be much appreciated. I would try them out but don't want to give my info and make an account for all of these apps if they aren't what I want.

Answer
I track some of the same stuff you do, but not everything and I've tried some of the products you have, but not all. However, here's my take:

1. I use Runkeeper as my basic app. I'm primarily a runner and so are most of my friends. It links easily to facebook if you are interested in that. For me, this is how I communicate with my running community. It has some other basic cardio functions in it as well (elliptical, etc)
2. Runkeeper has a GPS function to be used with the iphone, it's generally accurate within 0.1-0.3 mile. However, when I want to be really accurate, I still default to my garmin which I can still link to my Runkeeper account. (ie, when I'm racing or want to track elevation)
3. Realize also that when you use GPS function on your phone, it will wear down the battery very quickly. I'll use the Runkeeper GPS function if I'm running or cycling an hour or less, but it's not ideal for long distances.
4. Runkeeper and probably most fitness apps will link to a heart rate monitor. However, I'd first ask why you intend to use one? As a PT, myself, I've come to the realization that unless you have a medical condition that warrants it, tracking heart rate is overly burdensome for little pay off. Just used your rate of Rate of Perceived Exertion. Whether you are doing intervals or tempo workouts, it's your exertional effort that's the real issue. Most of the established "guidelines" for heart rate during exercise were established for patients recovering from cardiac events, not necessarily for healthy adult fitness. So, unless you want to get into research about cardiac effort, I'd say don't bother. I suppose you can use it if you want to get a MORE accurate idea of your caloric burn, but I have better options for that (more later). I DIDN"T use one for years, mostly because I take a beta blocker which throws the whole target heart rate out the window anyway. I'm using one now (more on that in a minute) only because I'm pregnant and NEED to make sure my heart rate doesn't go over a certain amount (and I have arguements about that anyway). I use the iphone app with it, but haven't linked it to my RK. It does record it on the wahoo site, but I never go back and look at it. The wahoo site also does GPS and if you get the hardware, you can link it with your bike or a foot pod.
5. If you do want to use a HR monitor, I use the wahoo. My husband and I both have Garmin 910XT's and even though he got the heart rate monitor for it, he's happier with the wahoo. Again, he's not even using it anymore and I am. However, I don't even bother logging my heart rate...I use it only as a warning system. I do think I can link it with RK, but haven't bothered. Once I have the baby, I'll stop using it. Not sure why hubby doesn't like the garmin monitor...I just took his word for it.
6. Now, onto strength. RK doesn't really have a place to log this. I used MapMyRun for awhile which at least gave me an idea of how long I was weight lifting and an approximation of calories. In my opinion, if you are looking for an app that does everything, I'd say be prepared for a really complicated app. I found that the more features it has, the less user friendly it becomes. This is how I felt about MMR. For strength training, I'd consider a separate app. Same thing goes for nutrition. There are probably apps out there designed just for that which are much more user friendly.
7. Back to calorie counting. All the apps give you a basic ESTIMATION of your calories burned based on your weight and work out parameters. Even if you are using a heart rate monitor, again, this is only an ESTIMATE. Unless you are in a lab, all these tools provide estimates only. However, if you really want to know what your body is using and burning, I'd recommend the Body Media System. It's about as accurate as you can get with calorie count without having to be in a lab. The web app also has a nutritional log.

So here's my take in a nutshell:
1. Use a basic app for your cardio. Runkeeper is my personal favorite. Only use the GPS for shorter workouts
2. Use a separate GPS (I've only used garmins) if you want to be really accurate with your distance or if you are doing a long work out and simply sync it to your cardio app (like RK) from the garmin site.
3. Don't bother with a HR monitor unless you have a medical reason to do so
4. Use a separate app for your weight lifting and nutrition.
5. Consider a body media system if you REALLY want an accurate calorie count. It's expensive new, but I got a Core basic system used on ebay for $32. (myself, I'm content using the basic estimates from my cardio app).

Maybe there's an app that does everything, but I find that it gets too complicated....I don't want to spend 30 minutes logging my info.

Home security system vs baby monitor?

We are having Baby #2 in a couple of months and we live in a 2-story home, with our bedroom and main living on a different floor than the children's bedrooms. I want to be able to monitor each of my children in their own rooms by seeing and hearing them at the same time. I am also interested in monitoring them in the playroom. Has anyone found that a home security camera system to be more effective or affordable than a traditional baby monitor? If so, what is it like for you and which system did you use? Geeky dweebs and nerds are especially encouraged to reply with help.

Answer
To be honest, many baby video monitors can offer what you need. You can buy the parent unit and add more cameras as you need to monitor different rooms. I would take a look at the Samsung SEW-3037W. You can view up to 4 rooms at the same time using 4 cameras, via split screen on the parent unit. The night vision quality is good, it works over a large range and you can pan, zoom and tilt with the cameras

They scare me, srry iso long, plz help tho? PLEASE?

So, I keep having variations of the same dream and I have this feeling the entire time. I don't know how to describe it. Anxious, protective, angry, scared and so many other feelings to create this one bothersome one. Anyway, here's the dream: I'm in a really huge house, there are so many rooms and they all have a different theme. Me my brother sister and mom are stuck on the bottom and we have to find our way up to get out because there are no doors on the bottom. Or there is but its like we just cant go through them. Everything looks like I'm looking through scratched glass. We go throughthis typeof obstaclecourse andit involves swimming. We fail and this guy is monitoring us. I know that guy is evil. The dream zooms ahead and we're in a royal looking room and we can look around the corner into a tea room. There is a wealthy woman getting served there. My brother has to do something strange to make sure thecoastis clear. We continue sneaking our way up and the whole time that "feeling" gets stronger. Finally we're at the top and we aren't underground anymore. But my friend is guarding the door and she is telling us we can't leave. She tells the other guards to go and they do. I grab a knife from the kitchen. This room is cabin themed. I go over to her back and she says "Do what you have to do, I understand. You'll think its worth it" and I stab her and she drops the javelin and shield she was holding. I tell my family to come on and we run as fast as we can down a completely empty highway. Okay I wake up and the dreams continue into the next few weeks. Okay next night. We break out of the house fast and its skips all the details and we run down the empty highway. We see lit up billboards and mom point to a light through the tree's lining the highway. I keep looking at the light and while im looking away my mom brother and sister find a baby. We go to the light through the trees and bring the baby and we go inside a very busy restaurant diner/steakhouse thing. I have that feeling that this one guy is evil, he's are server. He has dark blonde hair and a black polo on. The baby is sitting beside mom. I know wat that guy is about to do b4 hedos it. I tryn to get my voice out but it wont come my throat is restricted. He walks over to the baby and mom is looking away laughing at my brother and sister. I watch helpless as he twists the babys head around till its neck breaks. It cries sorrowfully the saddest cry I will ever hear. I feel guilty and he walks away. I hate him so much. I think "I have to tell her" but I'm only allowed to tell her the baby is dead. I tap her and point to the baby, she sobs. That guy serves us our food and I cant speak, nothing will come out I literally can not make a noise. He smiles at me and jokes with me and I cant respond. We finish our food leave the baby in its highchair and get on our bikes (yes they just appeared) and ride back the direction we came. I have the sense we're still running we just finding another way to run because the RESTURANT changed places and was at the end of the highway and there was nothing behind it.
What does this dream mean? Its bothered me and I had so many dreams like it. We were trapped in a house, we had to run, we had to sacrifice human life along the way (my friend, the baby, sometimes it was my dad or my other brother, sometimes random ppl) and it scares me.
What do you think it all means?
I meant this to go in dream interpertatino what happened?>

Replacing a Netgear cgd24g wireless cable modem gateway?

top baby monitor reviews image

gerry

This unit keeps dropping the wireless signal. I unplug cable to unit from desktop and replug it, wireless often works, but not always for long. This Netgear unit came from the cable company. I was under the impression that my new HP Omni desk top had an internal modem and the Netgear was just acting as a router. Do I need just a router or another modem-router? I'd like to buy the right equipment to solve the wireless problem and send this unit back to Charter. I appreciate any insight you might share.

Answer
Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

DSL and Cable modems use different technology, for this reason you can't use a cable gateway (DOCSIS) with DSL or use a DSL gateway (ADSL2+) with a cable Internet connection.

The Netgear CGD24G is a cable gateway. http://support.netgear.com/product/CGD24G

A gateway is a combination modem and router in one enclosure.

A highly rated DOCSIS 3.0 cable gateway is the Motorola SBG6580. It is currently about $120 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040IUI46/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0040IUI46

You could also buy a standalone cable modem and connect it to a separate wireless router.

You don't have to buy your modem, router or gateway from your ISP, you can get one from a local retailer such as BestBuy or Fry's or online from places like Amazon.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 20 or more reviews with at least a 4 star rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Most cable Internet providers use the cable modem's MAC address to activate the modem.

You'll have to call your cable provider with the MAC of the new modem so they can activate it on your account. The MAC address is usually printed on a sticker attached to the modem.

That being said,

No desktop is going to have a cable modem. It might have a dial-up modem, though most newer PC's don't include one.

Many newer PC's do include WiFi and Ethernet adapters and this might be what you are referring to.

Here is how it works,

Your cable modem connects to the Incoming coaxial cable and provides Internet (WAN) access from your ISP.

This WAN connection connects to a wireless router, In your case, with a gateway, the connection is internal.

A router connects two separate networks and manage the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

There are usually 4 LAN ports on the router to connect PCs and other devices via Ethernet cables if need be.

A wireless router enables you to provide wireless (WiFi) Internet access to all of your WiFi enabled devices such as laptops, game consoles, cell phones and tablets, Streaming devices such as Roku boxes and Internet enabled TV and sound devices, etc.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

The best solution would be to use a wired (Ethernet) connection between your PC and the router.

A quality 50' Ethernet patch cable is less than $10 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001W26TIW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001W26TIW

If it is not feasible to run cables you have other options such as powerline network adapters You plug one in by the router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

However, if you absolutely need the wireless mobility there are various other ways to extend a Internet connection to areas with a weak wireless signal.

Devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include 4 Ethernet ports in addition to the wireless radio.

Good Luck...

what's the best of the best babyphone / baby intercom / baby monitor thingy ?

Michael V

what's the best of the best babyphone / baby intercom / baby monitor thingy ? I've heard that I need to buy something with DECT and that there are also systems that monitor the baby's breathing etc... what's the top of the line system ?

Answer
I was also looking for a good baby monitor, and my husband and I wanted a combined video/audio one.

After much researching around and reading lots of reviews, we're going to get the:
Swann SW233-WDM VBM-330 Digital Video Baby Monitor
It costs about AUD$260.

These were our criteria for selection:
Audio - good microphone
Color video and reasonable screen size
No interference or use of multiple channels
Night vision (at least a few meters)
Thermometer a plus
Multiroom monitoring if possible
Portable receivers
Transmitter - non-battery powered
Motion sensor for stop of movement
Underwriters Labs mark for safety
Intercom
No LED flahes on camera
No Auto-mute

The Swann model does not necessarily fulfil all the criteria, but the most important ones it does fulfill, and it fulfills the most of our criteria.

Hope that helps! P.S. Swann is very good in surveillance technology.
