Can I use old router as a bridge to boost wifi signal?

I have an old linksys router sitting around that I want to use to fix wifi signal issues in my house. I know you can get wired into the 2nd router when you bridge. I am just wondering if this 2nd router will be able to transmit a good wireless signal or is it just used to connect wired devices?

Should I just buy a better router or try and make this work with my old router which is laying around?

Answer
You can use multiple wireless routers provided they are configured correctly.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

Depending on the size of your house and the factors listed above, you may need one or more wireless access points or wireless range extenders to cover all areas adequately.

Many wireless connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

If you are getting a new wireless router try to centrally locate it up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

That being said,

There are various ways to extend a Internet connection to areas with a weak wireless signal.

Devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include 4 Ethernet ports in addition to the wireless radio.

You can also use multiple routers provided they are configured correctly.

Unless you have experience in network configuration, it's not a good idea to use additional routers unless you turn off the routing functions and use them as wireless access points. Your wireless signals will interfere with each other if they're operating on the same wireless channel. A router also acts as a DHCP server to assign IP addresses, you only want one DHCP service running.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an auto configuration protocol used on IP networks. Computers that are connected to IP networks must be configured before they can communicate with other computers on the network. DHCP allows a computer to be configured automatically, eliminating the need for intervention by a network administrator. It also provides a central database for keeping track of computers that have been connected to the network. This prevents two computers from accidentally being configured with the same IP address. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Host_Configuration_Protocol

You'll need to manually configure the second router before placing it into service. The IP address needs changed so it doesn't conflict with the first router, the DHCP functions should also be disabled on the second router.

You'll have to connect a PC or laptop directly to the second router via Ethernet and log into it's interface to change it's IP. You'll want to change this to something that doesn't conflict with the first router but is in the same subnet.

Plug a Ethernet cable from LAN port on the first router into one of the LAN ports on the second router, Don't use the second router's WAN port for anything. Also use non overlapping wireless channels such as 1, 6, 11. You can use the same SSID for everything.

For example if you main router has an IP of 192.168.1.1 and it broadcasts on channel 1.

Set your second router as an access point with an IP of 192.168.1.2 and have it broadcast on channel 6.

Although it is not absolutely necessary, I would also reserve the second router's IP in the first router's configuration or set DHCP to assign a range that doesn't include the second router. For example if your devices had the IPs listed above and you wanted to allocate up to 20 DHCP IP addresses you could set the range from 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.30. This way in case the second router were powered off for some reason DHCP would not assign 192.168.1.2 to another device which would cause an IP conflict when the second router was powered back up.

Good Luck...

Is there any software or hardware that can detect WIFI noise influences?

TheRalfZer

I Have a wireless network setup, but there is a point where the wireless network get interference from somewhere that causing very slow network connections despite that Windows say that the signal strength is excellent, even radios or cellphones are acting up in that area.

Is there anything i can use to detect what it is that can cause this?

Answer
The easiest way is to use a Spectrum Analyzer. Used to be they were very expensive and only used by those who professionally work with Wifi but there are some units out now that anyone can use and afford. Wi-Spy is one of those available http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/c240/
Metageeks also have several units that give a complete band view even some advanced units that are very very good . http://www.metageek.net/

In some cases a program like NetStumbler is all that is needed to find interfering AP's within range. That will give you a list of channels and SSIDs and strength of the AP's within range.
http://stumbler.net/ its just software that works with compatible wifi cards. This isn't as complete as a full spectrum scan as it won't show phones, baby room monitors, cameras etc that may be on the same channels.

I know its on my papers but i am in to much pain to go see he is formula fed and eats every 2 hours

and also did you have to go to a appointment for your baby when he was a week old and did he have you monitor his food intake and diaper usage?
how many dirty && wet?

Answer
I can't remember for sure but I think 1 dirty in a day and as many wets as they are days old (does that make sense?). As for doctor's visit, we had a home health nurse visit (joke, I think she was to come inspect our house. I find that bull s#!t because I have a nice home and we are not trashy people, but we are young 23 & 24) We also saw the PED in the first week. He did not ask about the wet and dirty diapers.

How long does it take for a dog to have a litter of puppies?

bcfeagin

The pomeranian is in labor and I am just wondering as to how long it will take for her to have them? My new friend k b seems to be sleeping so she cannot answer. HELP!
I do not think having a dog fixed would be the right thing to do, they have as much right to breed as we do, how bout you go get your vag sewn up and see how you like it! (ok i know its not the same but I did not choose to have her impregnated it just happened)

Answer
Get her into a quiet dark place. I took in a preganant stray that was in the 1st stage of labor for 15 hours. I opened my bedroom door and she ran into my closet and had a pup within 2 minutes. NO JOKE she wanted a quieter darker place than she had.

THe vet told me the 1st stage can be up to 24 hours (maybe a little more) call ur vet. This is strictly panting a little harder and restlessness...if there is pushing it should be NO MORE than 2 hours without a puppy.

Good luck!

I am going to copy and paste you some more info some wont be relevent since she is already in labor:

*She needs to be eating puppy food and not dog food.
*Set up a welping box in a private semi dark spot
*Take her temp starting 10 days b4 due date when it drops to I believe 97 something labor should be within 24hrs
*be there when she gives birth
*Make sure to read up on dogs giving birth...have a baby nose sucker and some towels around. Offer her plenty of water while in labor she will probably not eat though.
*I had to move the pups when their sibling was being born as she moved around a lot..there were also 4 born with fluid in the lungs and bubbles coming out of their nose. Read up on rubbing a puppy down after trying to suck the nose. Vet told me nesting and panting stage can last up to 36 hours...no more than i think an hour and a half btw puppies..(verify with vet or books)
*Weigh puppies at birth and every day thereafter. They should gain every day I had a few stay the same for 2 days though. They should NEVER loose weight.
*do not use thick blankets to line welping box as they can get trapped under and suffocate
*Mom will need 4xs her normal food after babies are born and unlimited water
*Make sure water bowl is deep enough pups cannot wiggle into it

Verify all this with your vet but this is what I did. I also kept a baby monitor on 24/7 to make sure she did not lay on one (she did 4xs) and had to get up numerous times the first few nights to help the runt nurse. He woudl get pushed away.

Good luck and it is hard work but very worth it. We had 8 puppies and all survived. Also, make sure to trim their nails every week or they will hurt mom.

***when u weigh the pups hold, pet and talk to them for a minute it will be good for their socialization when they grow. sit right next to mom if she is nervous with you handeling them so she can check on them.

Keep any other dogs away from her and the pups..My pom could not even be in the HOUSE or the mom would freak out!

They need their puppy shots and deworming (my vet said deworm at 5,7 and 9 weeks and mom needs it then also)

Teens: Is it weird if I am always reading parenting blogs and articles?

I am also looking in the Parenting section of Yahoo Answers too. I just think it's interesting the different theories people have about raising kids, and I also want to be prepared if I want kids. I'm 16.

Answer
I don't think it is weird at all! I did the same thing when I was your age and I'm even doing it now, to keep up with trends because my children are starting to talk marriage as adults!

For me, my interest has always been genuine, as yours seems to be. I have always wanted to be the best mom. Now I want to be the best mom-friend to my grown kids and their special people. When the time comes, I want to be the best grandma to our little ones. It is, indeed, interesting how people raise their kids in all sorts of ways and have different beliefs and methods for dealing with challenges. You sound like a very insightful person.

Want some advice? Don't stop! You are learning the most important stuff you will ever use in life, from the best teachers. Most of all, you're reading! (Busted! I'm an English teacher!) When the time comes for you to have kids of your own, you will have a very good foundation for learning more through experience. You'll know what might happen if you do this or that, and you'll make informed decisions. Your friends who are not reading up on this stuff will come to you for advice, which is a lot of fun! Maybe you won't be fearful of the crazy things that happen to all parents at one time or another; wouldn't that be great?! Confidence in parenting is very important, since children derive their sense of safety from parents who are calm and can deal with life without freaking out.

That all said, one thing I caution you about is monitoring your feelings about having kids when you are so young. It is great that you want to be a parent: you're learning about it and you're taking the responsibility seriously. If you aren't very careful about what is going on in your thoughts, though, you may become a parent way too soon. That is not a good thing at all--not for you, the other parent, or for a child.

So enjoy learning, but be sure you are not "gah gah" for babies. I can speak from experience. I have sons and daughters, and I can't imagine my life without them all. When they were little, I wished they were born with pause buttons! It is much better to be a parent who has earning power and some life experiences than to be a 20-year-old parent in a bad marriage without a college education, a steady job, skills for the workplace, or a way to provide for the child you spent your childhood dreaming of having someday.

What sugar levels would be considered for gestational diabetes?

best baby monitor apple on Sikker Concept Baby Monitor | Ubergizmo
best baby monitor apple image

casper_396

My doctor is convinced that I'm still 35 weeks pregnant, however, my son is measuring a bit larger than what he's supposed to. He's 7lbs. 7oz. at this point, and they say that he's measuring as if I'm 38 weeks. Well, my doctor says that I could be struggling with gestational diabetes. I already took the one hour and the three hour glucose tests and the one hour came back a little high, but the three hour was fine. She seems to think that maybe I slipped through the cracks, so for the last couple of days, I've been monitoring my sugar with a meter. She didn't tell me what numbers were considered high or low, or diabetic or not, does anyone out there know? I've been testing four times a day, once in the morning after fasting and two hours after each meal. In the morning, I've been running in the high 80's to mid 90's and bfast has been under 120 usually, however my lunch and dinner have been anywhere from 115-139, is this bad, and does it mean that I indeed have gestational diabetes?

Answer
The targets from my endocrinologist for gestational diabetics are:

- 95 or below fasting (before breakfast)
- 130 or lower 1 hour after eating, 120 or lower 2 hours after eating.

So it sounds like you are mostly in range, only slightly over. I would say you could probably benefit from a few diet changes, but you don't seem to be running high blood sugars all day. Good for you for measuring your blood sugars.

Here are some things you can do to help:

- avoid "white" carbs - white bread, white potatoes, white pasta, white sugar, white tortillas. No sodas or juice of course.

- never have a carb by itself - always eat it with protein, or protein & fat. That means if you have an apple, have some turkey or cheese with it. This will slow down how quickly the sugar in the carb is converted to glucose and will keep your blood sugar from spiking.

- Carbs are key, but they're not totally off-limits. Try to limit your meals to 30-45 carbohydrates. Pick your worst meal (lunch?) and make it 30 carbs, a little more where you're not having trouble (breakfast?). But more importantly, make those carbs low-glycemic. That means whole wheat, multi-grain, or brown rice, corn tortillas over flour. There's a great high protein pasta that doesn't budge my blood sugars called Barilla Plus pasta - it tastes just like regular but it's awesome for diabetics.

- if this doesn't work, make your meals mostly protein and vegetables, with minimal carbs. Corn and potatoes are carbs, not veggies, for this purpose.

Good luck! Also keep in mind there is such a thing as genes. You maybe be having a big baby just because you're having a big baby, ya know? You're so close to being within targets I have a hard time believing that would make you measure 3 weeks ahead. Also, ultrasounds aren't always accurate. So try not to stress out - stress raises blood sugars.

How do I get my parakeet to stop laying eggs?

joloaz213

How do I get my parakeet to stop laying eggs? She's laid 9 since January! There's no boy bird around and we don't plan on getting one.

Answer
Thank goodness you have the sense to stop this behaviour, rather than encourage it and put a mate in! So many people lack this sort of sense, I've noticed. If she lays over and over and over and over, she'll become a chronic layer, which is very dangerous and may very well take her life one day. Chronic layers tend to lay huge clutches (3-5 eggs is a normal clutch) on a consistent basis.

Anyway, there are some mating factors you need to consider. She's laying because she thinks it's spring/summer, and that's a great mating season. To make it seem like winter/fall, when she wouldn't want to mate:
1) Cover her cage or give her at least 12 hours of darkness and silence a day. If she keeps laying, cover her longer. Sometimes it takes going to the extreme of covering her for 20 to 22 hours a day, but daylight is a big factor. Long daylight hours symbolize warm weather, so long night time hours symbolize poor, cold weather.
2) Monitor her food intake. All birds are different, but you should be able to get a gist of how much she needs to eat per day and feed her accordingly. I'm not sure about budgies, but my lovebirds (a bit bigger than budgies) eat about 1.5 spoons of food per day, so that's all I free-feed them. I'm not starving them because I know that's all they'll eat, and I'll refill their food the very next day.
3) Don't pet her anywhere stimulating. That would be everywhere but the head. If something is stimulating her, especially on the back, wings, tail, under the wings, and belly, she feels as if a mate is initiating the mating process.
4) Keep her occupied and adapt her to change. Change her cage around at least once a week, so that every single perch and every single toy is replaced by another and moved in a different position. She'll keep busy with all the new things, she'll feel mentally challenged by it, and she'll know that babies won't survive in an environment that's constantly changing. You may even want to move her entire cage to another part of the room, or a separate room.
5) Don't allow her nests. If she has any nooks and crannies she burrows into to lay in, remove them. Don't give her any nesting materials. If she shreds the paper on the bottom of her cage and piles it, put something between her and the paper. A grate is very convenient in these times. It's another thing to clean, but I had a lovebird who was determined to nest. I put the grate in for maybe 3 to 5 weeks and she lost interest in shredding nesting material.

Do NOT remove her eggs. They're infertile anyway, so there's no worry of them hatching. Leave them with her for the duration of incubation (21 to 30 days since the last egg was laid) and when she realizes for herself that they aren't hatching, she'll leave them of her own accord. By constantly removing her eggs, you're sending her the message that predators are taking them. Her instincts tell her that in order to further the species effectively, she has to lay more and more to replace those eggs, so she'll do so!

Make sure she's on a good, balanced diet. I suggest pellets, seed, and fresh foods. Pellets are a good alternative if you can't feed a large variety of fresh foods during the day. Harrison's, Roudybush, and Zupreem (without natural colours) are great brands. A nice pelleted diet for a budgie would be 10% seeds, 10% fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains but NO avocado, chocolate, tomato leaves, mushrooms, onions, apple seeds, other fruit pits and seeds, salty, sugary, greasy, caffeinated, or carbonated items, and 80% pellet. Fresh foods that would be great for her right now would be foods that are high in calcium (egg shells require a LOT of calcium that takes away from the hen). Dark, leafy greens are very popular, such as kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, bok choy, broccoli, etc. You should also provide some high quality mineral blocks that she can pick at in case she feels she needs in. Manu blocks are wonderful; they're very natural and highly nutritious, and many people will also suggest cuttlefish bone. Be careful of the solid backing, as birds may be able to choke on it.

Good luck.

Is it safe for the baby for me to exercise so vigorously?

best quiet baby monitor image
Q. I do a light weight training session of 20 minutes prior to doing a one hour cardio routine. I read recently that your heartbeat shouldn't get above 140, but I always am above 140. My cheeks get red. I also read that the baby has a harder time to cool off when I get heated. Will the heat cause brain or any other type of damage? Has anyone out there worked out 5 days a week vigorously and still had a healthy baby? I feel fine, I just want my baby to be healthy.

Answer
You shouldn't allow you core body temp over 102F when in the first trimester as it can cause birth defects. This is true for exercise, hot tubs, saunas, and illness.

Hyperthermia and Pregnancy
http://www.otispregnancy.org/pdf/hyperthermia.pdf

http://www.oaktrees.org/fitness/preg.exercise.html
The changes in the 1994 guidelines largely are the removal of somewhat arbitrary restrictions on exercise session duration and maternal heart rate, as studies have demonstrated that earlier cautions were unwarranted, and that women tended to naturally adjust their exercise intensity with respect to the developing pregnancy.

The concerns about the 140 BPM maternal heart rate, exercise duration, and body core temperature were due to concerns that excessive maternal core temperature during exercise (especially in first-trimester women) might impair fetal development, as problems such as spinal bifida had been backtracked to excessive maternal core temperatures in some instances (such as when the mother was ill).

However, more recent research has demonstrated that women may exercise safely at higher intensities than previously thought, and that perceived exertion ("mild to moderate exercise") proves an effective safeguard when properly applied. Moreover, given the variation in ages of pregnant women, plus the wide variation of maximum heart rate in the general population, an arbitrary maximum heart rate specified by a single number was virtually meaningless.

http://www.babycenter.ca/pregnancy/fitness/exerciseguide
In general, you shouldn't go for the burn or exercise to exhaustion. Listen to your body and stop exercising if you feel if you've done too much. Because you'll have less oxygen available for aerobic exercise, you should generally stick to 60 per cent of your maximum heart rate while pregnant. Some women like to monitor their heart rate while exercising, but you should never rely on this alone as heart rates in pregnancy can vary widely. A good rule of thumb is to slow down if you can't comfortably carry on a conversation while exercising.

And stop exercising immediately if you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, feeling faint, vaginal bleeding, difficulty walking, contractions, or unusual absence of fetal movements. Do bear in mind that your baby is often most quiet when you're exercising.

How do I care for a baby bat?

Shannon W

We woke up this morning to a baby bat on our sidewalk and our hearts are too big to just let him die off. If anyone has any info on how to care for it, please let us know

Answer
Foliage-roosting bats have beautiful fur in shades of reds, yellows and tans (like dried leaves), or they have multi-colored fur that is frosted with white. These bats are frequently found on the ground in the early summer when mothers are moving their young, or when they become grounded following blue-jay attacks or storms. Occasionally, these bats panic and defend themselves when humans approach by spreading their wings in mock-attack and making loud hissing or clicking noises. Follow the steps given below to rescue a tree-roosting bat. If you feel unequipped to move the bat, proceed to step five.
Note: If the bat is a gray or brown color, it is probably a crevice-dwelling species. Crevice-dwelling bats found out of doors and grounded will need to be examined and cared for by a wildlife rehabilitator. Place the bat into a container using the method described in "A Bat Found Indoors", and proceed to step five.

Make sure the bat is safe from predators. Have someone stand guard over the bat so it does not fall prey to domestic pets, fire ants or blue jays. If the bat remains quiet and still, proceed to step 2. If the bat panics as described above, proceed to step 5.

2. Do not use your hands to help the bat. Instead, gently touch a small tree branch (two or three feet in length) to the bats feet. This usually initiates a grab reflex and the bat will grip the branch with its toes. When you lift the branch you can inspect the bat (or mother bat with babies) for any injuries. If the infants are clinging to the mother and there are no apparent injuries, proceed with step 3. If injuries are detected, proceed to step 5.

3. SLOWLY move the bats into the branches of a nearby tree. This must be done very carefully. A sudden move may cause a mother bat to fly off and abandon her young. Using a ladder, gently secure the branch into a spot where foliage and leaves conceal the bats. The spot should be on a branch at least six or more feet from the ground, with a clearing below to enable the bat to take flight. (Do not place the bats on the trunk of a tree where they will be vulnerable to predators.) Proceed to step 4.

4.Monitor the area. Check the area the following morning. If the bat has remained in the same position overnight it may have an undetected injury or illness. If the mother bat is gone but her babies remain, the babies may have been abandoned. Proceed to step 5.

5.Call a local wildlife rehabilitator for assistance. If you need help locating a wildlife rehabilitator or bat worker in your area please see Local Rescue.

I have a degree in exercise science and am going to school for physical therapy now and really want to track my fitness now that I have an iPhone and I know the importance of health. However, after researching apps I'm not sure the best app or app combination to use. I want to get a heart rate monitor (wahoo or polar?) and many of the apps will sync with it. I want to track calories, GPS run mapping capabilities, nutritious intake, and I want to track my strength training regimen (sets, reps, etc). The my fitness pal app seems to do some of these things and you can also tie in other apps or sync them with it. However there are so many other ones and I want to know the best way to do this if anyone can help. So far I have downloaded: my fitness pal, endomondo, fitocracy, sportstracker, runkeeper, real intelligence fitness app, and digifit icardio. If someone can help me out it would be much appreciated. I would try them out but don't want to give my info and make an account for all of these apps if they aren't what I want.

Answer
I track some of the same stuff you do, but not everything and I've tried some of the products you have, but not all. However, here's my take:

1. I use Runkeeper as my basic app. I'm primarily a runner and so are most of my friends. It links easily to facebook if you are interested in that. For me, this is how I communicate with my running community. It has some other basic cardio functions in it as well (elliptical, etc)
2. Runkeeper has a GPS function to be used with the iphone, it's generally accurate within 0.1-0.3 mile. However, when I want to be really accurate, I still default to my garmin which I can still link to my Runkeeper account. (ie, when I'm racing or want to track elevation)
3. Realize also that when you use GPS function on your phone, it will wear down the battery very quickly. I'll use the Runkeeper GPS function if I'm running or cycling an hour or less, but it's not ideal for long distances.
4. Runkeeper and probably most fitness apps will link to a heart rate monitor. However, I'd first ask why you intend to use one? As a PT, myself, I've come to the realization that unless you have a medical condition that warrants it, tracking heart rate is overly burdensome for little pay off. Just used your rate of Rate of Perceived Exertion. Whether you are doing intervals or tempo workouts, it's your exertional effort that's the real issue. Most of the established "guidelines" for heart rate during exercise were established for patients recovering from cardiac events, not necessarily for healthy adult fitness. So, unless you want to get into research about cardiac effort, I'd say don't bother. I suppose you can use it if you want to get a MORE accurate idea of your caloric burn, but I have better options for that (more later). I DIDN"T use one for years, mostly because I take a beta blocker which throws the whole target heart rate out the window anyway. I'm using one now (more on that in a minute) only because I'm pregnant and NEED to make sure my heart rate doesn't go over a certain amount (and I have arguements about that anyway). I use the iphone app with it, but haven't linked it to my RK. It does record it on the wahoo site, but I never go back and look at it. The wahoo site also does GPS and if you get the hardware, you can link it with your bike or a foot pod.
5. If you do want to use a HR monitor, I use the wahoo. My husband and I both have Garmin 910XT's and even though he got the heart rate monitor for it, he's happier with the wahoo. Again, he's not even using it anymore and I am. However, I don't even bother logging my heart rate...I use it only as a warning system. I do think I can link it with RK, but haven't bothered. Once I have the baby, I'll stop using it. Not sure why hubby doesn't like the garmin monitor...I just took his word for it.
6. Now, onto strength. RK doesn't really have a place to log this. I used MapMyRun for awhile which at least gave me an idea of how long I was weight lifting and an approximation of calories. In my opinion, if you are looking for an app that does everything, I'd say be prepared for a really complicated app. I found that the more features it has, the less user friendly it becomes. This is how I felt about MMR. For strength training, I'd consider a separate app. Same thing goes for nutrition. There are probably apps out there designed just for that which are much more user friendly.
7. Back to calorie counting. All the apps give you a basic ESTIMATION of your calories burned based on your weight and work out parameters. Even if you are using a heart rate monitor, again, this is only an ESTIMATE. Unless you are in a lab, all these tools provide estimates only. However, if you really want to know what your body is using and burning, I'd recommend the Body Media System. It's about as accurate as you can get with calorie count without having to be in a lab. The web app also has a nutritional log.

So here's my take in a nutshell:
1. Use a basic app for your cardio. Runkeeper is my personal favorite. Only use the GPS for shorter workouts
2. Use a separate GPS (I've only used garmins) if you want to be really accurate with your distance or if you are doing a long work out and simply sync it to your cardio app (like RK) from the garmin site.
3. Don't bother with a HR monitor unless you have a medical reason to do so
4. Use a separate app for your weight lifting and nutrition.
5. Consider a body media system if you REALLY want an accurate calorie count. It's expensive new, but I got a Core basic system used on ebay for $32. (myself, I'm content using the basic estimates from my cardio app).

Maybe there's an app that does everything, but I find that it gets too complicated....I don't want to spend 30 minutes logging my info.

My wife's water broke at right about 5 months(20-21 weeks I think). The doctors are saying that it's impossible for the baby to continue growth and are recommending induced labor. I have heard stories about the water filling back up and having a healthy baby after a full term pregnancy. Is this at all feasible? Should I take the current doctor's opinion, or should I seek a second opinion from a different hospital?

Answer
Well there's a lot of questions here. How much did her water break? Was it like a gush or a trickle? At 20-21 weeks the baby would not survive. I have barely seen survival at 24-26 weeks, and if they did they had a lot of long-term complications and defects. A lot of things have to come into play here. Where was the tear. If it was high up and small, it's possible for the hole to repair itself. The body is constantly making anmniotic fluid and tries to replenish the supply every couple of days. Your wife needs to stay VERY hydrated because that is what will help to produce more amniotic fluid. She would need STRICT bedrest and frequent monitoring. Now if the tear was down low or the tear was fairly sizable anywhere, then there may be no other option for her. I would certainly get a 2nd opinion. If you have the availablity to get to a bigger city with a level 3C or level 4 NICU, then absolutely try there instead. They have often more sophisticated equipment and better diagnostic studies. They also may be able to do an amnioinfusion which basically is infusing fluid into the womb. It can be done continually or serially - like once every few days over a few weeks/months. Good luck.

What's the best way to get rid of stretch marks after having a baby?

CrazyAsian

Had a baby about 6 mnths ago and I was looking for the best way to get rid or shrink my stretch marks..

Answer
There are a few ways to do it, either you can use the DIY method or try those proven treatment creams out on the market.

Try to massage the area with the stretch marks about three or four times a day with moisturizers that contain cocoa butter or shea butter as a prime ingredient. This hydrates the skin, making it more pliant. Again, this is most effective only in the initial stage.

If your stretch marks are already pass the initial stage (when they are red, purple, pink, or brown, depending on the color of your skin) and become white or silver (usually with deep indentation), then it would be far more difficult to minimize them, but not entirely impossible to "remove" them. But before you begin searching for these treatments, try to read more information on these topical treatments first.

Many are advertised to "repair" stretch marks, but few have actually been proven to be effective. Here's some that are available on the market:

a) Wheat germ oil - may help improve stretch marks in their early phase.

b) Glycolic acid - increases collagen production; can be administered in higher doses by a dermatologist (usually costs a few hundred bucks and requires a few visits before you see results)

c) Vitamin C - certain formulations might increase collagen production, but they'll only help with early-stage stretch marks; for best results, combine with glycolic acid.

d) Relastin - the effectiveness of this product is unknown and unverified.

e) Peptide-containing products - these "repair" creams are ineffective; there's no evidence that they work.

f) Retinoids - they're fairly effective in increasing collagen and elastic production in the early stages, but they should be avoided if you're pregnant or nursing; they're more effective when used in combination with glycolic acid.

I would recommend treatments that are using "100% natural ingredients" such as aloe vera. Aloe vera has been shown in clinical studies to have a positive effect on wound healing and holds anti-inflammatory properties.

As stretch marks start out as microscopic tears in skin layers due to overstretching of the dermis, aloe vera helps heal these small wounds without causing scar tissue to form, effectively preventing the appearance of stretch marks. Aloe vera has been used for thousands of years by the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Indians and Chinese to decrease the appearance of scars and to moisturize and heal skin. The extracts from the aloe leaf protects skin from environmental factors and promotes skin regeneration.

My friend recommended me this and I have been using for a few weeks now, have shown some positive results but I am monitoring the progress since the product have a 90 days return policy. For more details, you can check out the site here >>> http://is.gd/NHQQ

How can I have rheumatoid arthritis at 29 and how can they tell with just an MRI?

DC

had a c-section in April. The day after my tailbone hurt so bad every time I sat down or stood up. Excruciating. So I went to the dr and she sent me for an xray. She got the results and said it looks like it might be broken and she wants to get a better look with an MRI. When she got those results back she said it looks like I have rheumatoid arthritis and wants to put me on medication and send me to a rheumatologist. I'm only 29 years old! Plus, how can they tell I have RA just through an MRI? Isn't there a blood test or at least some questions I have to answer?? What is going on here?

Answer
Hello,

I agree that your doctor's degree of conviction is surprising. The natural and obvious thing to suspect would be to bruising to your tail-bone, caused by your being laid on the operating table, (or dropped off it!! - I cannot forbear to say. Only joking.). The time-proximity (immediately afterwards), seems compelling.

Instead we have an off-the-wall, (desultory, non-sequitur) diagnosis, which is difficult to link to your c-section in any way.

We don't know what part, exactly, of your tail-bone we are talking about? The "main" tailbone itself, - the sacrum, - doesn't contain any joints: it's a solid mass of 5 fused bones, with a small joint below it to the vestigial tail (in humans), called the coccyx, ... and at both sides a major joint, each to the pelvis-wings, right and left.

This picture may help with the anatomy, (click and return) http://www.raqs.co.nz/safedance/graphics/pelvis.jpg

Either the lower coccyx-joint, or one/both of the side pelvis-joints, might be affected by rheumatoid arthritis, - I am not saying they are, in your case, but they could be, because they are of the correct type of joint, (a "synovial" joint).

If we are talking about your vestigial tail, (coccyx), - there is also a separate condition called "coccydynia," which is a non-rheumatoid bruising or strain of the vestigial tail.

To make any medical diagnosis at all, there are 3 main sources of diagnostic data. It is helpful to think in terms of these, because none of them can safely be ignored, and together they constitute a logical progression.

These are, (1) the history, - I mean the patient's story, (2) the examination, - the feeling with the hands, and (3) the further tests, - the further investigations, blood tests and X-rays.

In your case the history, (the story), seems to connect your problem to the c-section. Unless you already have other dodgy joints? - like the fingers, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, (because rheumatoid arthritis in its early stages, tends to affect the peripheral, extremity joints), - then there is no suggestion of rheumatoid disease in your history.

Examination, - presumably whichever bit of your tail-bone it is, is tender, - but this is non specific. Presumably your doctor didn't remark, on looking at all your other joints?

Further investigations, - I didn't think that an MRI scan was specific enough to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis reliably, - so I have just investigated the (online) research.

This 2000 paper, (click and return) http://rheumatology.oxfordjournals.org/content/39/7/700.full says: << "Bony erosions are seen well using MRI in early rheumatoid arthritis and are frequently detected before they appear on plain radiographs." >>

And it goes on to say, << "MRI has a clear advantage over other imaging modalities, such as plain Xâray imaging and CT [scan], in its ability to image soft tissues and fluid within the joint." >> Fair enough, so far, -

But, << "... This often involves the use of a contrast agent, gadoliniumâdiethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (GdâDTPA), given [by injection into a vein before the test]. " >> You don't seem to have had this added refinement?

And at the end it says, << "One of the concerns about the use of MRI to monitor ... R[heumatoid] A[rthritis] is that its high sensitivity for detecting erosions may be associated with low specificity, so that false positives could occur." >> A "false positive" is where they definitely diagnose rheumatoid arthritis, based on the MRI scan, but you don't in fact have it.

I think you should definitely still have the blood tests! I think your doctor has raised a degree of anxiety which is not matched, by a corresponding degree of certitude. That anxiety is still her baby, in my opinion, and not the Rheumatologist's in a few weeks' or months' time.

The most important blood test is probably the "Rheumatoid Factor" test. You should also be blood-tested routinely for Gout, (the serum uric acid) and also for SLE, (the anti- nuclear antibody or ANA). You should also have a full blood count, - FBC, - in my opinion, and we also need to know if you have a raised ESR or a raised CRP, - because these are both non-specific, but sensitive blood-markers of *any* inflammation taking place inside your body.

I think this Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis is perhaps a tad premature. My suggestion is that you insist on the the appropriate blood-tests, before any rheumatoid-specific medication (besides ordinary pain-killers), is started. There is no harm in having an appointment with a Rheumatologist, I guess.

I hope this is of some help.

Best wishes,

My wifi is very slow at night, fast in morning?

Mark S

Recently my wifi started crawling at night, while connected speeds were normal, or above expected. Speedtest, net results used to top out at 9mbps, now connected is ~13, but wifi is ~1. Actually wifi starts at 2-3 mbps during the test but drops to around 1mbps by the end of the test.

I can try wifi in the morning and the speed is back to 13-14mbps.

I've reset the router, changed network names, but wifi is still slow in evenings while connected speeds are super fast.

This is a Cisco E1000 router. I disabled QOS which might prioritize certain items. The router shows only 2 connections, both of wich are mine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your responses so far. I will add that the network is password protected and i have confirmed via the router that there are only 2 connections, my desktop and iPad.

Answer
Assuming your wireless network is secured and you don't have leaches sucking up your bandwidth then I would suspect wireless interference.

By nature, interference in wireless systems causes problems with smooth, consistent speeds.

Many wireless connections experience interference from microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors and other wireless devices which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously.

Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens..

Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

What all this jargon means is that you might be experiencing wireless interference which is slowing do your WiFi connections.

Because your problem is time based, are there any heavy electrical loads that come on when you experience problems? Things such as heaters, air conditioners, pumps, etc.

You can try to reposition the antennas on the router or your wireless adapter.

Moving one or the other away from dense walls or electrical interference would also help.

Wireless connections are never as fast or consistent as wired connections. If your interference is on the 2.4 GHz band and your devices support 5 GHz then a new dual band router might help.

There are also various ways to extend a Internet connection to areas with a weak wireless signal.

Devices such as wireless extenders can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include 4 Ethernet ports in addition to the wireless radio.

The best solution would be to use a wired (Ethernet) connection between your devices and the router.

If it is not feasible to run cables you have other options such as powerline network adapters You plug one in by the router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

Good Luck...

when should i register for the baby shower??

Q. my mom and boyfriends mom are throwing the baby shower in the beginning of november. when is a good to time to register? should i start registering now?? and how will i know what to register for. do they give me a list there??

Answer
You should register ASAP. It will take you awhile to settle on which baby products you want, and there is so much comparison shopping to be done. You will want to read all the reviews online on every single product and make sure it is actually safe.

Don't settle for something based on price or looks. My uncle got my daughter the cutest activity center, but once I read all the reviews online, you couldn't pay me to let me daughter go in that injury machine.

When you go to a store to register, they will give you a book with pictures and prices and such. It is a good place to start. The best thing you can do is go through a typical day with your newborn.

Baby wails on the baby monitor, signaling she is awake. You walk into her room where she is in the crib, with the matress, matress pad, crib sheet, bumpers (if you choose), blanket and/or bag for sleeping in and/or swaddling blanket. Over babies head is a mobile. You pick baby up and place her on the changing table. You grab a diaper out of the hanging diaper storage thing on the wall, take off her sleeper, toss it in the laundry basket, change her diaper, wipe her with wipes, apply powder and cream, put the diaper in your diaper genie, grab a onsie out of the basket on the top shelf of the changing table, dress her in that. Now you carry her to the bathroom, wash her face with a cute little wash cloth... see where I am going? Just go through a typical day and make a list of every single thing baby will need. Don't forget grooming products, bath products, baby motrin, thermometers, etc.

Once you have your big long list, you need to prioritize what goes on the registry and what you will buy. Don't assume putting anything on the registry is stupid. Your great aunt who hasn't had kids in 100 years may have no clue what to get for baby. People appreciate small things being on the list as well as big things. It makes it easier to know what you have, what you need, and what brands you prefer.

How can I protect my newborn baby from the cat?

I have a question... I have heard from several people that when you have an infant in the home and you also have a cat that at times cats can tend to jump in the baby's basinett or crib and "suck the life out of a baby" because of there constant milk smell.. What could I do to the bassinet to make sure the cat doesnt try to get in there in the middle of the night when we are all sleeping?? does anyone have any tips I have had the cat for 7 years and I would hate to get rid of her.

Answer
Cat's sucking the life from babies is nothing more than myth. But like many myths or "urban legends", it probably has a small grain of truth in it.

What you have to worry about is the cat smothering the baby by accident. If your cat is anything like mine, she likes to lay on top of you (mine lays across my neck at night). Newborn babies, as you know, do have sufficient motor control to move their heads if the cat happens to plop down for a nap on top of them. It is an UNLIKELY scenario, but I could see how it might happen.

The best thing to do, would be to close the door to the babyâs room. If you have your baby monitor going, you should still be able to hear the baby fine.

Or, if you're not comfortable closing the door, considering having your husband install a screen door on the baby's room. They sell light, wooden screen doors at Lowes and Home Depot for around $20. Nothing fancy, just the plain Jane kind. They are easy to put up, a cinch to take down (when the babies older), and it would keep the cat out, but still let you see and hear the baby through the screen at night.

I am thinking about getting a bearded dragon, how much would all the accessories cost?

David

I've been researching bearded dragons these last couple weeks and I am interested in getting one. I am an experienced pet owner when it comes to raising reptiles. I have raised snakes, turtles, and tortoises and am considering getting a baby bearded dragon soon. I want to set his tank up before i get him, any ideas on how much it would all cost?

Answer
First of all, you need this website: http://www.beardeddragon.org

You will learn everything you need there.

Secondly, DO NOT LISTEN TO ADVICE FROM THE PET STORE!! They don't know squat about caring for exotics, so make sure you know everything you need before you go, and don't let them talk you out of something you know to be true. That's why you need the above website!

Here is a basic list:

20g tank minimum. You'll need at least a 40g breeder when he's grown, so you may want to go ahead and get the bigger one. You can block off part of it if he seems intimidated by the size.
Craigslist is a great place to find cheap tanks.

Solid substrate for the bottom - Repticarpet, paper towels, non-adhesive shelf liner, or my favorite, tiles. Tiles are great. You only have to buy them once. They are super easy to clean and disinfect. They come in a lot of colors and styles so you can customize your look. They also help keep beardie's nails filed down. Sand, especially calcium sand, or any other particle substrate poses an impaction risk and should not be used for a dragon under one year old. And then washed childrens playsand is the only safe option. Please consider these cons about sand before you make a final decision, though.

*possible impaction risk
*have to keep buying it
*heavy
*hard to dump out for tank cleaning
*impossible to disinfect (it's important to disinfect any surface your dragon has pooped on because they do carry salmonella)
*stinks
**Absorbs moisture from poop, so that fecal bacteria is left behind even after you scoop out the solid waste. You dragon walks through this fecal matter and spreads it about his cage. He ends up living in what is basically a litter box.
**The left behind fecal bacteria can cause an increased risk of parasites

You can go real cheap here, pennies for paper towels or less than $10 for tiles.

Thermometer - A temp gun or digital indoor/outdoor therm with a probe on a wire. The stick on type are useless, and it's important that you accurately monitor your temps. The probe goes directly on the basking spot, and this temp should be 100-110. The cool side should stay around 80.
Wal Mart sells the Acurite Digital Weather Station for $12. It is an indoor/outdoor therm with the probe and works perfect for this application.

Heat bulb and fixture - Lowes and Wal Mart both have metal dome work light fixtures. These work great. The bulb can be just a regular household bulb. You might need to try different wattages to see which one gives you the temps you need. Usually a 75W or 100W will do.
Bulb <$1, Fixure: $10

UVB bulb and fixture - AVOID THE COMPACT COIL. Linear fluorescents provide the best UVB (besides MVB bulbs, but you can learn about that on bd.org) and REPTISUN 10.0 (not ReptiGLO) is the best fluor bulb on the US market. You can get the fixture at Lowes or Wal Mart for a reasonable price. Make sure the fixture does not have a glass or plastic shield over the light. Glass and plastic both completely filter UVB. The bulbs are way cheaper if you order them online from somewhere like Pet Mountain.
Bulb: $30-$60 depending on which type you get. The fluor needs to be replaced ever 6 months and the MVB just once a year so the yearly costs are about the same.
Fixture: 24" fluor fixture at Wal Mart for $8, or the work light fixture for MVB for $10.

Then you'll want some cage furniture, a basking rock or log, a hide if you like (although a hide isn't really necessary), some fake greenery to make it pretty. You might want to consider something to enclose 3 sides of your tank. Some beardies freak out about all the visibility, but some don't seem to notice. I used fake bamboo blinds to do this and it looked great.

You'll need a plan for your live feeders. Again, way cheaper to buy in bulk online than a few at a time at the pet store (and healthier too, no doubt). A 20 qt or bigger plastic tub does nicely. Cut a hole in the lid and hot glue or duct tape some screen on top for ventilation. You can learn all you need about caring for your crix at bd.org, and you can also learn about other feeders.

Here's a good website to tell you which veggies are good for your dragon:
http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.coâ¦

Okay, just as important, I will give you a list of things NOT to get, no matter what the pet store tells you!

*calcium sand
*crushed walnut shells
*any substrate that has particles
*stick on thermometers
*crickets bigger than the space between his eyes
*mealworms
*compact coil UVB bulbs
*heat pad
*blue or red night light

I don't think there is enough research done on EMF from brodcast antennas/dishes and its effects on pregnancy. So I don't think ANYONE can really answer your question in any certainty or with the backing of scientific data. My gut instinct tells me continous long term exposure can't be good just because the nature of EMF. I won't worry about the monitors though.

I am a business student, I have been assigned a project to market a new product and I need to âtest the conceptâ
I am proposing a child/baby (under 5yrs old) monitor. A small devise that is attached to the childâs clothes and a parent would have a second remote device that would allow a parent to monitor the child while they are away from home (up to 1 mile). Options would allow a parent to push a button on a small hand held devise that would allow them to hear the child, detect movement (a general floor layout of your home) and location-GPS. Other possible options would be a heart or breathing monitors.
Allowing a parent, piece of mind and security, knowing that their child is safe.
Is this a product you would purchase?
What other features would you add or remove?

Thank you for your help!!
What if the product didn't have a 1 mile distance and used wifi or a cell phone signal ....and no it would not be harmful to a child

This product is something to protect against things like sids, by monitoring breathing. The sound function is not necessarily for monitoring the child but maybe the child's environment, say nanny or day care.

Answer
Essentially you're describing a device like the one parents can put in a teens car or the local cops put on house arrest losers. Generates telemetry and a delta location roughly every two minutes via GPRS sensors outside the home and RFID ones inside, or sattelite (though this would likely be prohibitively expensive). Basically a good idea if it's especially hard to disable and remove by the child or a third party. Somewhere like Mexico City or the Phillipines with high incidents of kidnap for ransome, this could be a popular item in areas like that. My main concerns are as follows : Does this generate any harmful emf waves ? The answer will invevitably be yes and this is starting to become a big concern in LA which pretty much means the rest of the country will start worrying about it in a year or two. All the same, microwaving my childs chromosomes vs kidnapping is a tough choice. Is it obtrusive ? Is my toddler gonna look like a thug sporting his house arrest anklet ? Lastly, so now we have a clear signal to the abducted child, it's headed south on I-5 straight for the border, how is your company going to make sure the law enforcement agencies also have access to this telemetry in real time and that they will use it and respond to it, but only when I want them to because I really don't want them to know that I ran in to drop off videos at the porn hut before dropping them off at day care. Probably best to use some of the early failures and problems Lo-Jack devices faced in their infancy and how they got law enforcement on board. Am I being too technical for something that's just a concept ?

I have a question about what I should do here. This is what happened this morning...
I have a black lab/rott mix and a cocker spaniel. The mix is a little over 2 and the cocker is just a year old. I let them outside into our fenced in back yard to potty and went to change my sons diaper. They had been out there for less than a minute when I heard barking, growling, and and squealing.
I ran outside as fast as I could (I'm 9 months pregnant) and saw my mix dog standing on the porch and the puppy no where in sight.
When I came further out onto the porch, I see my neighbors dogs (a pitt and a chow mix) practically eating my dog. They had jumped the fence that has to be at least 4-5 feet tall. One has her by the legs and stomach area and the other has her by her front paws.
I threw things and tried to kick the dogs to get them off of my puppy. Nothing worked. When the neighbor finally made it through her gate and mine, the dogs had drawn blood from my puppy. She grabbed one by the collar and I tried to pull the puppy away from the pitt bull.
Once I got her free, I came in and washed her off to see where the blood was coming from. I didn't see many open wounds, and they were all small. But her stomach was bruised very badly and she could not walk.
I immediately took her to the emergency vet. My vet is closed today. My neighbor said she would pay for the visit before I had left to go there. Once I got the estimate for all the things they wanted to do (ie blood work to check that all organs were properly working, xray to make sure the bones were not broken and that her lungs had not been punctured, and overnight to keep an eye on her) the amount was almost $1000. Obviously the neighbor doesn't have that kind of cash just lying around.
I agreed to drop off some of the unimportant things, making sure the neighbor knew they have to be done this week at the regular vet (it will be cheaper.) It brought the cost down to under $500. She called in and made the payment. The vet did the xray and blood work, puppy will be fine.
I made copies of all payments and estimates for myself and the neighbor. I also requested a copy of the chart for our records. I figured that I would need these just in case. I feel that I have done everything correctly and properly, even though she is a friend. She was way before moving in next door.
Here is my question - do I file a police report? What should I do about her dogs, that obviously shouldn't be living next door to me? If someone like animal control comes out, will these dogs be taken away and/or put down?
Any help or experience with this situation will be helpful.
I never said that I want her dogs killed. I also never said that I want her to get in trouble for any of this. I just was wondering if I should have a report in case something else happens. I know that she shelled out the money for the vet! I know that she feels bad! That is why I don't want her to get in trouble...if she didn't care, I would have already called a lawyer to take care of this in court. I'm not asking her for any more money (unless something else comes out of this). And the fence cannot be replaced because it is owned by the owner of her house...she is a renter. They ALWAYS bring the dogs out on leashes and I've never had to worry about putting my dogs out into a yard that I own.
And no, I don't feel like the dogs "have a right" to live next door with their owner if they can't do it PEACEFULLY. Almost killing my dog=not peaceful. This is not the first time we have had issues with these dogs either, just the only time something has actually happened.
Also just wanted to add that the dogs are HUMAN aggressive too. They bit their owner in the process of all of this. And they are kept in kennels when inside of the house because they have tried to attack her child since he was born.

Answer
I'm not positive about this but I think this is what happens:

First, you can't really file a police report. Your neighbor did not intentionally set her dogs on your dogs and no people got hurt in the incident. They will probably send you to speak to the ACO.

The ACO will take the dogs for a ten day quarantine. During this time they will be monitored for signs of rabies and if they do show signs they will be immediately exterminated and their brain's sent for testing. I believe you have the legal right to demand euthanasia for rabies testing if you were bit, but not just for your animals. I could be wrong, however.

Now, since your neighbor is your friend, offered right away to pay- and did pay this is what I would recommend:

Talk to her about the problem and how to make sure it never happens again. You took reasonable precautions to keep your dogs safe so now your neighbor needs to do her part. Her fence needs to be replaced with an 8 ft. one. I've seen pits jump 6fters with ease. Pits are known for their dog aggression (before I get all the hate- I own 2 pits and think they're wonderful dogs, you just have to know the breed and be honest with yourself about it) so she needs to be aware of her dog's tendency to chase down and kill small animals. Many dogs have prey drive which is what this sounds like. Chows aren't known for their brains or temperament mostly because they were initially bred to be food in China. Not that I have anything against Chows, but again, you need to know your breed's history in order to live in harmony with them.
This being said, tell your neighbor that you have every right to let your dogs out into your yard without worrying that her dogs are going to come over and kill your dogs. Her dogs either should only be outside if they are left in a pen (with a top) or if she installs a second, much higher fence with an electric fence a couple feet in from the visible fence so they don't want to come near that boundary.
If she does not agree to either of these options then you will need to tell her that you will be filing a report. In some places the dogs will be immediately euthanized, in others they will be deemed "dangerous dogs" and she will have certain restrictions and rules to follow if she wants to keep her dogs and 0 more chances for them to mess up. These include only being allowed in public with them on a 3 foot leach and a hard metal cage-muzzle, and keeping them in a certain type of enclosure on her property at all times.

Good luck and I'm so sorry this happened to you. Just remember that those awful, vicious dogs that attacked your baby are someone else's light and love. They may seem terrible to you but to your neighbor they may be loving babies that are just misunderstood. Maybe this is the first time anything like this ever happened? How would you feel if this happened with your Rottie...?

What does it take to open a used bookstore?

J. Kay Swi

I am currently working on a college research paper

What was the total start up cost in order to open a used book store?

How much was the rent for the facility you use, and how much is it currently?

What are all your business expenses including past and present?

What is the monthly charge or payment to create and maintain an online store or website?

Explain the business you run?

What is your competition and how do they differ?

What is the economic, social, and legal documents, information, impact, and conditions to which you have to abide by, adapt to, and work in order for your business to properly function?

What is the demand for products you offer in your location, and how does this make your business successful?

What is a good description for your store, and the design of the facility? What made you choose this design and how do you think it helps you or make you stand out amongst your competitors?

Is there any other vital information that you think is relevant and/or you think I should know?

Answer
I am a former bookstore owner, a former university book buyer, and a former manager for Barnes and Noble and Books a Million.

In March of 2000, I opened a 6,500 sq ft. Book/Gift/Cafe, in a strip mall, in a small southern town, pop 8,500.

The start up cost was 50,000.00 (it was all I had).

Below is an itemized list of monthly expenditures.

Rent: $1,000.00
Utilities: 650.00
Phone: 150.00 (includes internet)
Salaries: 2,800.00
Licenses: 35.00
Advertising: 200.00
Fed Emp Tax: 900.00
St. Emp Tax: 60.00
Sales Tax: 2,400.00

Fed Income tax: NA

Inventory replacement 6,000.00

Gross Income: 31,000.00

The nearest comparable bookstore is 81 miles south. For this reason, I experienced a measure of success. There are factors that influence the money customers have to spend such as: 911, the high cost of gas, shipping charges, the presidential elections, etc.

I sold my business for a profit in 2006.

A business is like a baby. It has to be fed to grow, it has to be monitored continually, and it takes years before you see the success of the many hours of work you have invested.

I would be glad to answer any questions you have..

Answer
Wireless cameras are getting really cheap. it gets down to how much do you want to spend. Next, what kind of picture (best), do you want a camera that can pan and zoom (probably you don't need that), and sound (might be good). If you spend a little time looking at them you can narrow it down. Avoid the cheapest ones and get a name brand one. for this you need a wifi camera that plugs into 110 electricity (usa standard). I have 3 in my house. If you search carefully, you can even get a camera that you can bring up on your smart phone. If you have a name brand wireless router like dlink, linksys or netgear, try for a wireless camera made by them. that way it will be simple to connect to the router. Newegg has great prices and no taxes.

Baby monitor for ipad?

N

I am looking for a baby monitor camera to use on my ipad. The one I have now uses a monitor screen but my house is too big and it is now out of range. I want a monitor to use with wifi so I can see my baby on my ipad. I would like one with the same features as my current one. One that pans, and I can talk back to the baby when shes crying. I've found one so far, (Motorola Blink1 Wi-Fi Video Camera for Remote Viewing with iPhone and Android Smartphones and Tablets ) but looking for other options and personal feedback. Thanks!
