Q. Is there one that can be used even though the PC may be turned off? Preferably, i'd like to monitor the activity via my laptop? Any surveillance gurus out there that can guide in the right direction?

Answer
Do you have a wireless network? I use the Linksys WVC54GC wireless video camera on one of my networks and I'm very happy with it. My only complaint is that it doesn't have night vision like a baby monitor. If you have a wireless network running, by all means use this camera, it's easy to use and you won't need to leave your PC powered up like you said because the camera has its own built-in web server. Plus, you can set up motion detection and only have it record the times when there is motion. You can even have it email you an .AVI video clip of the motion it detected, pretty cool. Should cost you about $110-120 at a BestBuy or CompUSA. If you don't have a wireless network and want to set one up (it's easy) then go with the Linksys WRT54G. If you don't want a WLAN, you have other answers above to review...

Do you (or would you) ever use a "nanny cam"?

It's a catch 22 for me.. See I would definitely use a nanny cam to check in on my baby during work, however I would feel super uncomfortable if I was being under servailence while babysitting. (although Id have nothing to hide)

So would it be fair to use one if I myself would feel uncomfortable? What's your thoughts on nanny cams?

Answer
We have CCTV camera's in our house anyway (I'm paranoid probably) but we also have a small camera in our Nursery that acts as a baby monitor and a "Nanny cam" as we have a little screen on the monitor that shows us the image of the room. I wouldn't like to use a visible Camera; It would make our babysitter feel uneasy, if I had any doubts about the person looking after my children, they wouldn't be looking after them. Simple. Most of the time, my sister, Niece, nephew or mother-in-law babysits for us so we don't have to worry.

Use whatever makes you feel happy. If you want to use one for the safety of your children; use one! It doesn't matter if the babysitter feels uncomfortable as long as you (and your children) are happy.
