Just wondering... ? my friend and his wife are expecting a baby, and they are both deaf!

Answer
Baby monitors are made so they flash when a baby cries, so that helps. You might want to ask them too, but didn't you ever wonder how they know when their phone rings, or the door bell rings? There's all sorts of lights that flash, and even things that vibrate when there's noise.

One of the more fun (and pretty easy) ways is the hearing-dog. This is a service dog trained to run from the source of noise to the owner, then lead the owner to the source of noise. :) Very easy to train any old dog to do this, just get a nice dog from the pound or a rescue and it's so simple to train that most anyone can do it, not just professionals. I've even heard of cats being trained and used for this. When it comes to a baby, then toddler, then child, the dog is a best bet because when they're running around and playing then cries out the dog can run and find them wherever they are and show the parents that way.

Add: Flynn, just going from my own experiences with the deaf community the babies begin understanding and signing as early as 6 months old. There's also the chance that a baby with 2 deaf parents will also be deaf, and if that's the case then the baby will just grow up learning sign entirely. (If you ever babysit one, they'll turn their head so they can't see you if they're doing something naughty, it's aggravating!) If the baby tests positively for hearing then usually the parents will try to make sure the baby is in a daycare/play-group/preschool/has a nurse/nanny/babysitter/family who are around a lot hearing spoken language. Since this person says they can hear and it's their friend, they should be able to make sure the baby has some exposure to spoken language every day. They basically learn the beginning skills for language from sign, and spoken as their secondary language.

It's always interesting to see a preverbal baby signing though.

How to deaf people take care of a baby?

I have always wondered that. They cant hear the baby cry, or hear its first words... What is it like to be deaf and have a baby????
I'm not asking to be rude!!!

Answer
As someone stated there are monitors that flash when a baby cries. It flashes when there are any type of loud noise, so if it's a toddler in their room alone and they break something or knock something over, the parents are alerted by a bright strobe flashing.

As to hearing a baby's first words, they don't care. They see their child's first signs. And that happens A LOT sooner than the first words.

For the rest of parenting, it's just like anyone else...a lot of trial and error. They don't need any additional assistance because of their hearing loss.
