So, i figured out im having triplets, 2 girls and a boy.. what can i expect? any advice? im seriously (pleasantly) surprised, i was only expecting one! what is the likelihood of disorders and birth problems (ive heard there is a higher chance of those types of things with triplets).
Answer
Congratulations to you! Three babies, you must be so excited!
I have never had triplets, nor have I known anyone who has. However, a friend of mine recently had twins and it was a special circumstance because the babies became so large...they were both 7lbs at birth! Neither of the babies suffered any major problems or complications...they were delivered at 36 weeks, and one needed help breathing, but only for a few minutes. It was my friend who was worse for wear during the pregnancy and birth! Towards the end she became so large that even walking was an issue. She developed anemia and the PUPPPS rash, which is partly why she was induced so early (we were all convinced that those babies would have stayed in there 40 weeks or longer if they'd allowed it). She also needed a cesarian birth, as the doctors determined it would probably be unsafe for her to deliver vaginally. She regained her health and strength shortly after her boys were born, however, and everyone is doing just fine.
Almost anytime a woman is pregnant with multiples she'll need to see both a regular OB and a high risk doctor. Simply carrying more than one fetus is a higher risk, both to the babies and the mother. The problems I described earlier that my friend had are some common ones among women carrying more than one baby. While the occurence of birth defects and disorders is higher in multiple births, it does not in any way mean that your triplets will have any such problems. Your doctors will monitor you and the babies extrememly carefully throughout your pregnancy and will address any issues immediately if they arise. It's common for multiple babies to be born earlier than singletons, but your doctors will certianly help prepare you and the triplets for that event.
So, other than that you should expect to be shopping for three layettes, three bassinets, three times the diapers....! So exciting, and I wish you the very best of luck with this big addition to your family!!

Answer
1. Learn Fertility Awareness and how to monitor the female cycle to pinpoint the optimal time for intercourse. Having sex at the fertile time of the cycle is necessary to learn how to conceive twins (or even one baby).
2. Take folic acid daily. Folic acid is important for any healthy pregnancy, and it has also been shown to increase the likelihood of conceiving twins--an additional one woman out of 176 taking folic acid will bear twins, as compared to women not taking the supplement. If you want to have twins, start taking folic acid at least one month before conception.
3. Eat cassava root, a type of wild yam found in Africa. In a region in Africa where cassava is a staple of the local diet, women have the highest rate of twins found anywhere in the world. Many nutrition researches agree that eating this yam increases ovulation.
4. Drink milk and eat beef to increase the odds of having twins. According to Dr Gary Steinman, lead scientist in a medical study of twins, women who have a milk-based diet are more likely to conceive twins naturally than their vegan counterparts. It is thought that natural properties in milk may stimulate the ovaries, encouraging the production of multiple eggs for conception.
5. If you have an infant or toddler keep nursing it while you try to conceive twins naturally. According to one study, women who are still breastfeeding and yet fertile are slightly more likely to produce twins.
6. Gain a little weight. Women with slightly higher fat percentages and those who are a little overweight are more likely to have twins. Don't overdo it, however--your health is especially important during pregnancy.
7. Have a family history of FRATERNAL twins (IDENTICAL twins are completely RANDOM). This one is out of your control, but if the MOTHER has fraternal twins in her family, she is more likely to have twins of her own. You can quite possibly conceive twins (or improve your chances) without a family history, but it helps.
8. Maximize your intake of whole foods to optimize your nutrition and increase your chances of carrying twins to term.
9. Eat a healthy diet as you try to conceive twins and become pregnant. Your body needs to have a good supply of nutrients to conceive and nourish two babies.
10. Have several babies and try to conceive twins in your late 30's or early 40's. Women who already have had children and are slightly older are more likely to have twins.
Warning: Multiple carry more risks than singletons. Be sure you are in top physical condition before trying to conceive twins, and discuss the implications with your midwife or OB-GYN.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
