what is the difference between stereo headphones and earbuds?

Iffy

I just bought some Bose stereo headphones for my husband, but started to panic cause I'm not sure if they are compatable with his ipod or not... does anyone know if they will be? Thanks!
Also, the pic showed that they were not the large old-fashioned head phones. They appeared to simply slip in the ear, there was no surrounding material. I got these from Amazon, so it was too late to ask once I paid!

Answer
Stereo means that there are 2 independent channels being played. It gives the illusion that the sound is coming from the left, right, behind, or in front of you. Most headphones do this. They just don't advertise it because it usually goes without saying.

To SpitFire, headphones is the general term. They aren't noise cancelling in all cases. Some do the exact opposite. Sound goes out for open headphones. See Grado. Only about 2% cancel noise. Closed headphones isolate noise, which is almost the opposite. It gets rid of the baby crying behind you, but usually won't get rid of engine drone.
In ear monitors are a more formal name for earphones.

Any ideas................................?
